One of my buddies who loves Earth, Wind & Fire told me recently that I like melancholy music. I suppose that it should be no surprise that when blues tracks enter my personal top ten, they seem to fly to the top. Zora Young's "Tore Up from the Floor Up" is my introduction to the vocalist. On B.B. King's "I'm Gonna Do the Same Thing" she rocks with a passionate blues, "Got to make me think he loves me by staying in this place, sleeping in the other room so I don't get snoring in my face, and when I ask him for some money to go out on the town, hand it to me smiling daddy; don't you act no clown." That said, Zora's "Toxic" smokes a slow burning blues, "I can't seem to shake the bad memories of you." "Slowly" likewise sizzles over a low flame. Her version of Tony Joe White's lovely "Rainy Night in Georgia" chills with a love remembered, "Heavy raindrops falling, seems I hear your voice calling, 'It's all right.'" The title track shakes the rafters with Zora's vocals dripping with regret, "I didn't realize I would miss you till you were gone." Her medley of two standards "Since I Fell for You/Silhouettes" dresses these pop gems in a royal shade of blue. "Handy Man" is a Zora original that percolates to an infectious beat. The set concludes with Muddy Waters' throbbing "Two Trains Running." This is an excellent blues set that grabs a hold of you and shakes you till you feel it. Enjoy!
