Amazon.com Review

By displaying not only the current temperature but also the minimum and maximum temperatures for any given period this mercury-free thermometer answers questions such as, How cold did it get last night? How hot was it today? The secret is a flange on the black, current-temperature pointer. As the pointer moves when the temperature changes, the flange simultaneously moves one of the bright orange minimum or maximum pointers. Thus, when the lowest and highest temperatures are reached during a measuring period, the bright orange pointers remain where the current-temperature pointer left them. The measuring period can be anywhere from, say, a minute to a month--or even a year. A period won't lapse until the pointers are reset, which is accomplished by simply rolling them to the current temperature by means of a button on the thermometer's front. Made of anodized aluminum and rugged plastic for durability, the thermometer can be used indoors or outdoors. It lies flat on any surface or, using a slot in the back, can be hung from a nail or screw. Its range is minus-60 to 120 degrees F, easily visible on a large dial. The thermometer measures 3-7/8 inches wide, 7-1/2 inches high, and 1-1/2 inches thick. --Fred Brack

This review is from: Torka 440100 BiMax Min/Max Thermometer (Lawn & Patio)
This is a great looking thermometer. The case, dial, etc. are all top notch and worthy of design awards. The actual performance of the thermometer is an entirely different matter, however. It seems to be fairly accurate up to about 60 degrees, but after that it seems to add about 10% to 20% to the actual air temperature, regardless of where it is placed. Case in point: on a cloudy day in the low 80's, the themometer read anywhere between 108 and 114 for six hours straight. It was shaded from any direct sun and was in an area that had great airflow, so my only explanation is that it was very poorly calibrated. I think the minimum and maximum tracking needles on this unit would have been very useful, so I'm disappointed that it did not work and I had to return it.

Obviously my experience is only a sample of one, so factor it in with caution, but there certainly did not seem to be any manufacturing defects with the unit I received.
