Attractive way to Gauge Water Application,
By Al the Pal "Al the Pal" (The Fruited Plain, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr.Friedrichs Gruppe 447500 Rain-Gauge (Lawn & Patio)
This is an attractive fixture to add to your garden - the green colors blend in nicely with your foliage, if it is still alive! The overall legnth of the fixture is 31", by the time you sink the stand into the ground, it will be about 2' high. This is a good height, most sprinklers will hit it so you can tell how much water you are putting on. That is the only way I've been able to measure moisture in mine, we have had a severe drought going on out here since I bought my gauge. I hope there's no connection! (I even keep our convertable waxed and the top down all the time.) The 1/4" white letters have graduations in tenths of an inch and millimeters and are fairly easy to read at a distance of 20'. It only has graduations to 1.5", so if you have a real "frog strangler," this gauge will probably overflow. (The old 5 gallon bucket on the back lawn will still work for a major storm - just put a big rock in it to hold it down and take it out before you measure the water.) This is made in Germany, and the label has a description in six languages; German, Dutch, Spanish, Danish, French and English.

Dr.Friedrich Rain Gauge,
By H.Vogel (angel fire, nm United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr.Friedrichs Gruppe 447500 Rain-Gauge (Lawn & Patio)
I used the Friedrich rain gauge for 9 months. That is until it broke. That was by thermal expansion of the condensate (i.e. the water). The collected rain had frozen. In short, the material of the gauge should have a thermal expansion coefficient greater than that of ice, and not smaller (as it is).The gauge's diameters (collection area versus collecting cylinder cross-section) are chosen so as to provide useful magnification for reading. That is approximately 2-to-1. The calibration is in l/m˛ (i.e. litre per metre squared, which equals mm [millimetre] of water depth, as if one were to measure it), and also in inches (as if one were to measure water depth). In summary good instrument, also suitable for precision measurement, however unsuitable for use at temperatures much below freezing. I wish this problem will soon be corrected as indicated.

Shoddy rain gauge,
By Jan Hutson (Austin, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr.Friedrichs Gruppe 447500 Rain-Gauge (Lawn & Patio)
This rain gauge was a disappointment all the way around. First, it arrived broken. Second, it was made of plastic when I had thought (judging by the photo) that it was wought iron. And third, it was marked in meters instead of inches. It was made in Germany and should have stayed there.
