The tough neighborhood of the Albuquerque setting, the supportive family, and the local vernacular of the convincing first-person narrative are incorporated into this plausible mystery. Reluctant readers will be attracted not only to the book's brevity but also to the level of suspense maintained; the story won't disappoint them. Smoothly written and nicely paced, the mystery's predictable conclusion conveys a message in Sox's realization that his fears of being a "chicken" are unfounded in the face of his heroism.
