Editorial Reviews

Adrian Pasdar and Golden Globe® nominee Cecilia Peck star as lovers Torn Apart by the harsh realities of day-in, day-out Middle East turmoil. Pasdar is vibrantly heroic as Ben, a 21-year-old soldier torn between what duty and his heart tell him to do. As Laila, Peck is the perfect complement to Ben: thoughtful where he is headstrong, vulnerable where he is bold. Escape is the couple's only hope. But to where? And how?

5.0 out of 5 stars A touching love story on the order of Romeo and Juliet, January 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Torn Apart [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Set in the Israel, Adrian Pasdar plays the lead role very convincingly with Peck very convincing also as the love interest. They were neighbors who grew up together as children. He moved to the US and returned as an adult only to fall in love with his childhood friend (Peck). Of course, it is "doomed" from the start. They are of different religions, at odds with one another, and their parents don't approve and barely does the community. Although the main plot is somewhat predictable as a Romeo-Juliet type love story, the setting of the time, location and politics is not so predictable and makes for an interesting new twist on the genre. The actors are extremely believable throughout and pull you into their story. A wonderful tear jerker love-story for the 1990's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jewish/Muslim love story tragedy, July 25, 2008

This review is from: Torn Apart (Ws Dol Dts) (DVD)
I'm partial to love stories, watch a lot of them and this is a good one. Halfway through the film everyone knows that it won't work for them no matter how much they love each other. Something like Romeo and Juliet although not so epic of course.

In summary, a Jewish boy and Muslim girl fall in love as children. He moves to the States, and returns as a young adult to find her teaching school. She initially rejects him, but driven by deep love and desire to be with her he is insistent and ultimately she finds that she loves him as much as ever. Although she initially would not have anything to do with him, and would not have responded to him if not for his insistence, she is the one to bears the brunt of revenge from the Arabs who disapprove.

If the portrayal of the prejudices between the Jews and Arabs is accurate, I'm not surprised that they conflict continues unabated there.

This movie was so beautiful. A real romance story. To see the relationship between an Israeli and an Arab women was undescribable. Have the tissues ready.
