3.0 out of 5 stars Here's hoping the third installment is better...
I liked the first book in this series, it held promise. The second book, I struggled to get through. The last part of the book finally kicked into gear and I am now reading the third book in this series.... and struggling to get through it. At some point this 'I can't trust anyone' gets old. Make a decision and go forward... should I save the world or my sister...

4.0 out of 5 stars So happy to say: It's good! Really good!, December 30, 2009
This review is from: Torn (Blood Lily Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback)
I like Tainted, but I was a little underimpressed. It reminded me too much of the Signs of the Zodiac series with all the new body/sister stuff. Torn embraces its uniqueness and I loved the book for that. In Torn, Lily now knows that she has been working for the demons, after being tricked. She decides to play double agent and wants to work with demon-turned good, Deacon Camphire. A demon who raped her 14 year old sister Rose has invaded Rose's body and won't let her go unless unless Lily finds three pieces of a relic that will open all the gates that will allow billions of demons to flood the earth. Deacon wants the relic too, to keep it hidden and keep those gates stay firmly shut. Lily has to pretend to help the demon so that he won't hurt Rose. Added to all of this she must also keep up her pretense of being waitress Alice and act like she is still working with toady demon Clarence. Oh yeah, and there is another big bad following her everywhere. Torn could suffer middle book syndrome, where there is usually not a lot of furthering the overall plot. Instead the book has more action cramed into it than the first book. I like Lily and I like Deacon and Rose. This is important for a book to suceed. The only reason the book is a four star is that it falls a little short on the explanations. I found myself confused at times by what some relic or item was supposed to do. Also, powers come up pretty convienantly as they are needed in the story, and a lot of times as a reader I was confused how and why those powers were appearing. With Lily playing some many differnt 'roles' to hide her own agenda sometimes I got confused there also. Still there was much less of this confusion in the second book as well and it was an entertaining, engaging read. I find myself wondering if there will be more Lily books after the three originally planned. Julie Kenner has another winner I think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really 4.75 Rating, December 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Torn (Blood Lily Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback)
[SPOILERS INCLUDED] I strongly suggest you read the previous book Tainted before reading this book. This installment picks up immediately where Tainted leaves off. Lily rescues her sister but was too late to protect her from being possessed by her demon rapist, Lucas Johnson. Lily is up to her neck in trouble when Lucas blackmails her to vacate her sister's body. Lily together with Deacon Camphire fight tooth and nail to close the hell gates. Knowing that she's been double crossed and out-played puts Lily on the war path! This book was dark and dangerous with interesting demonic creatures, has a plethora of thrilling twists and turns and plenty of action. This was an exciting read and I can't wait to see how this trilogy concludes. I recommend this book and series to fellow dark urban fantasy readers and look forward to the next book Turned due out 12/29/09.

I also recommend:
Speak of the Devil (Morgan Kingsley, Exorcist, Book 4)
Scorched: The Dark Forgotten
Street Magic (Black London, Book 1)
Demon Inside
Darkness Calls

5.0 out of 5 stars Torn by Julie Kenner, May 27, 2010

Torn: Blood Lily Chronicles Book 2 by Julie Kenner
Amazon Product Description:

Lily is in trouble of the deepest kind. Having been tricked by the forces of evil, she killed what she thought were "demons" at will. Now, she knows better, and with a little help from half-angel, half-demon Deacon Camphire, she must try to take down the bad guys from within as a double agent.

My thoughts:
(WWW: Why did I choose it, What did I like about it, What I didn't like about it)
I chose Torn because I had just finished Tainted which ends as a cliffhanger and absolutely demands that you keep reading.
What I liked about it: I fell in love with the characters, despite their flaws. By this book I was fully invested in them and couldn't wait to find out more. Julie Kenner builds great characters who each battle demons from within and without during the story. Each of the main players in the story have strong convictions, and they all appear to be fighting for the same conclusion, just not all for the same reasons.
My favorite character: Deacon
I also love the plot. It twists and turns, keeping you on your toes as to who is fighting for and who is fighting against the Light (one of my favorite things about the book is that so many times it seems that the characters are changing sides - or at least thinking about it).
I like how each of the books is connected together. The storyline is woven throughout the books and revisited when needed. The intro to each book is great.
What I didn't like about it: The ending! Okay, it's not that the ending was bad, just a cliffhanger!!! Every now and again I got tired of the "Everything for Rose" aspect of Lily, but I have sisters so I can understand. There were times when a little more clarity would have been nice, but not necessary to the story.
It is an all-around good read.
I would readily recommend it to either gender - - grade 9 and up.

I liked the first book in this series, it held promise. The second book, I struggled to get through. The last part of the book finally kicked into gear and I am now reading the third book in this series.... and struggling to get through it. At some point this 'I can't trust anyone' gets old. Make a decision and go forward... should I save the world or my sister... which demon should I trust.... overplayed..If you save your sister and not the world.. well your sister is going to die anyway....If you are going to read these books, just buy all three. The second is not satisfying and you are hoping the third book makes reading the second one worthwhile and not a waste of time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bridge book, but fun, January 4, 2010
This review is from: Torn (Blood Lily Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback)
It's hard to review TORN without spoiling the big twist in the previous book, TAINTED! So, I'll just say that TORN follows the further adventures of Lily Carlyle, now Alice Purdue, as she attempts to keep demons from overrunning the Earth. Meanwhile, her thorny relationship with Deacon continues, her handlers have teamed her up with a partner, and now Lily has custody of her traumatized little sister, Rose.

Rose is now facing a violation that might well be worse than what she suffered in the previous book. The demon responsible for her rape has now taken up residence in her mind and body, sometimes possessing her wholly, sometimes lurking just below the surface. The parts of TORN that deal with Rose are pretty painful to read, especially when you think about Rose only being fourteen and what she's already gone through in her young life. And it starts to seem like there's no way for Lily to help her.

I was a little disappointed in the treatment of two of TORN's characters. One of them finally achieves his fondest desire, but I guess I was hoping he'd get a longer, more poignant scene when it happened. Then, there's Lily's partner, Kiera. She's a really interesting character, from her sharp tongue to the never-quite-answered question of which side she's really on. I wanted to see her explored more deeply, but instead I felt that she was kind of wasted and that she was only in the story for a particular reason.

TORN's plot is definitely a "middle book" plot. It picks up right where Tainted left off and serves mainly to set up the events of TURNED, and to prepare the characters for what lies ahead. However, it's a quick, suspenseful read filled with demonic intrigue and a bit of Indiana Jones-style temple-raiding. And we get to see Lily give one of the minor villains his just desserts, which is quite satisfying indeed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, November 26, 2009
This review is from: Torn (Blood Lily Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback)
Torn, the 2nd book in Julie Kenner's Blood Lily Chronicles did not disappoint. I purchased it on Tuesday evening and had it finished less than 24 hours later. I could not put it down.

Lily is a demon hunter, although part demon herself since she breathes in the essence of every demon she kills. When Lily's mother died, and her little sister was raped, Lily vowed to get revenge for her sister by killing her rapist. In the process Lily is killed, yet comes back in the body of Alice Purdue, a young woman who is involved, a long with her family, in the dark arts. Lily must keep her identity a secret from her sister, but vows to watch over her and protect her no matter what, all the while killing demons and frantically trying to keep them from opening the gates of hell.

Lily is a fascinating character and Julie Kenner's version of the paranormal is a relative new one. There were several twists and turns, Lily doesn't know who to trust, but she has to trust at some point because she needs to keep her little sister safe as well as save the world, and a girl can't do that alone.

You definitely need to read the first in the series called "Tainted" which was equally good. I am anxiously awaiting for the 3rd installment next month.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Tainted, February 12, 2010
By
This review is from: Torn (Blood Lily Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback)
I decided to pick up Torn after blazing through Tainted earlier this week. Torn continues the adventures of demon-hunting, butt-kicking Lily. After the earth-shattering revelations at the end of Tainted, Lily is trying to figure out her next move. This time though, Lily has her sister Rose with her, and it's time to do some serious big sister-ing. Without asking for it yet again, Lily is pulled back into the fight between good and evil and asked to find a hidden relic that would open the first eight gates of hell -and keep it from falling into demon hands. She gets help from a sexy half-demon, half-angel named Deacon, and ends up getting more involved with him than originally planned...

Torn has the same exciting, pulse-pounding action as Tainted, but tends to take a few more "breathers," allowing for Lily's relationship with her sister Rose, Alice's sister Rachel, Deacon and even the reader become most developed. While Torn may not have as much action as Tainted, to me it had greater characterization and brought in some elements aside from just action that gave it some more variety. I was particularly happy to see Lily's relationship with Deacon develop more, as well as to see more backlash from Lily being placed in someone else's body.

Another great addition to the paranormal romance genre, Torn's ending just wasn't as exciting as the ending to Tainted. While some interesting truths were revealed, it felt like more a "bridge" novel than anything else. This tends to be a reoccurring issue with the middle books in trilogies, so I can't blame Kenner for falling into this too-frequent trap. Despite this, Torn is a great follow-up to Tainted and a wonderful lead-in to Turned.

I definitely need to pick up Turned to see what happens to Lily.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great second book, February 7, 2010
This review is from: Torn (Blood Lily Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback)
After reading Tainted Book 1, I couldn't wait for Torn to be released! I really enjoy the character Lily in these books. She is easy to connect to. You can feel all of her emotions like you are right there in the action with her and the other characters she interacts with.

In Torn, Lily realizes she has been working for the demons instead of trying to stop them. She is sent on a mission to collect 3 pieces of a key that will lock the 9th gate of Hell and prevent millions of demons from taking over the Earth. The only part of this story that I found hard to believe is how easily she was swayed to believe she was working for the dark side. She took one person's word for it and turned on the men she was working for.

There was a lot of story to keep track of in this second book. Not only has she switched sides but she has to keep a demon who has taken up residence in her little sister's body happy by going along with what he wants, she has been assigned a partner to help collect the pieces, she falls in love with a demon, and she has to fight the urges within her that she takes in with each demon she kills. I highly recommend reading the first book first as this book begins right where the first one left off.

For a second book, this one really shines. Kenner doesn't waste time in recapping the whole first book in the second one like some authors attempt to do. To me, that can be annoying and distracting. Keener jumps into the story and has small bits here and there from the previous book. This series is definitely a good one. I can't wait to get my hands on Book 3 that was released in January!

4.0 out of 5 stars 2nd in the Blood Lily Chronicles, December 3, 2009
This review is from: Torn (Blood Lily Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback)

Lily has been betrayed by her mentor and has been working for evil instead of good. Now, she knows the truth and decides to team up with Deacon, a fallen angel trying to redeem himself. In order to stop evil forces from opening up more doors to the underworld, Lily must find the keys and destroy them.

Lily is faced with even harder decisions this time around. Her sister has been possessed by the demon she hates most in the world. And the only way to rid of him is to give him the artifacts. But if she does that, she's endangering the entire world. And when paired with a demon-hunting partner, Lily is unsure which side the young woman has chosen.

With more surprises in store and so many enemies, I'm not sure how the next book will be able to wrap up everything by the end. Fast-paced and just as suspenseful as the previous, Torn is a fantastic adventure with a big ending. Many "middle" books in trilogies are just fillers and leave something to be desired. But I was pleasantly surprised that Torn is a strong and solid story in its own right. The final book in the trilogy, Turned, will be released this December.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting urban fantasy, December 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Torn (Blood Lily Chronicles, Book 2) (Paperback)
When monstrous Lucas Johnson viciously attacks her sister Rose, Lily Carlyle sought vengeance but died instead only to have an angel give her a second chance at righting all the wrongs she committed (see Tainted). After being used as an assassin by those she thought she should kill, she went undercover as a double agent destroying demons from within.

However, as she did when she was human, she attacks without thought of consequences. Lily soon learns she has been tricked by the enemy whim she was brought back from the dead to prevent them from bringing hell to earth. She has killed her potential allies, which is part of the reasons the ninth gate from hell is open. The demon horde prepares to invade with her only ally to prevent their success being half-angel, half-demon Deacon Camphire, who may be a double agent working for the adversaries just like Lily currently is as she marches with the demons.

The middle tale of the Blood Lily Chronicles is fast-paced and loaded with action from the opening of the final war between Heaven and Hell until the climax with Lily caught on the wrong team. Readers of Tainted will comprehend how far Lily has come but also how far she has to go if she is to complete her mission (see Turned). Filled with action and personal traumatic choices (eternity in hell for fighting her heavenly cause), readers will appreciate Lily's violent war on demons with some sexual twists to enhance the strong tale that sets up the End of Days finish.
