Book Description

January 21, 2008
Eve Spencer is having a tough year. Her step father dies, her boyfriend walks out on her, leaving her to raise their infant daughter alone, and she is forced to move back in with her controlling mother and teenage sister. Just about when she is ready to give up, Chris Riley, her best friend from high school, returns to Dallas and lifts her spirits. Their friendship seems to be moving toward romance, until a second guy, Damon, enters the scene and gets Eve's attention with his suaveness and sex appeal. But Eve's life becomes more complicated because Damon and Chris are brothers. In a moment of weakness, Eve betrays Chris by having sex with Damon. When Chris finds out about Eve being intimate with his older brother, he wants to end their friendship. Eve is plagued with guilt. She can't imagine her life without Chris and wants to fight to win him back, but she is also intrigued by Damon's confidence and finds herself being drawn to him. Eve wonders if her trouble with men is because she felt abandoned by her biological father and never bonded with her stepfather. Eve hopes she makes the right decision without someone, if not everyone, getting hurt in the end and soon realizes that there are no rules in her twisted love triangle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Oh Brother! 3 1/2 Stars, March 28, 2008
This review is from: Torn (Paperback)
Torn by Juanita Paige is a coming-of-age story about what happens when desire overcomes common sense. Eve Spencer is a young, single mother who has just buried her stepfather who she did not appreciate until he was dead. Her baby's father decides on the eve of the funeral that he is going back to his former girlfriend because he cannot cope with Eve's Black American Princess persona. Eve is devastated because the last thing she wants to do is move back in with her mom and sister. However, she has no choice because her mom has been paying all the bills. Hopefully, the arrival of Chris Riley, her best friend from high school, will alleviate some of the burden.

Chris has been in California pursuing his dreams of becoming an actor. Unfortunately, it has all been a dream because he has returned to Dallas with nothing to show for his efforts. One thing he knows for sure is that he is going to see Eve. He knows about her daughter but that does not matter, he simply wants to reconnect with his friend. Chris and Eve soon rekindle their friendship, they even start working together. Soon they are closer than friends, until Chris' brother, Damon, shows up on the scene. Though she tries not to be attracted to Damon, Eve is drawn to him and finds herself in a compromising position. Will her strong feelings for Chris keep her away from his brother? Or will she give into temptation?

Torn is a good, timely novel that will appeal to young adult readers over the age of eighteen. I recommend Torn to readers interested in a contemporary love triangle.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Realistic Twisted Love Triangle, August 15, 2008
This review is from: Torn (Paperback)
Have you ever been in love with two people at the same time even though you knew it could end in consequences you would have to face? Eve Spencer is a young mother to her infant daughter Tami who had the perfect fairytale relationship...that is until it ends in heartbreak when Eva is forced into reality. Her boyfriend walks out, her stepfather passes, and she's forced to move back home with her mother.

Chris just moved back into town after a failed attempt to become an actor in L.A. He used to be Eve's best friend back in high school. But could there be more to Chris returning back on the scene? Damon appears to have it all...the handsome looks, a successful career, and a bunch of cars and homes. But are all those things enough for a relationship?

Torn was a very good read. It showed the maturity and growth of a young woman and how family issues play a huge role in how you choose your next relationship. I enjoyed the twists and turns of the storyline. Eve had to make a choice, follow her heart or follow lust. Being in love with two men may not be so far-fetched, but Chris and Damon have much more in common than you think, and "Torn" definitely had a realistic twisted love triangle.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh voice, July 17, 2008
This review is from: Torn (Paperback)
Juanita Paige writes with a fresh, contemporary voice that will appeal to many, young adults especially. She weaves a modern story about Eve Spencer, a girl struggling to raise a child while forced to live with her mother again. An old friend, Chris, comes back to her life, whom she finds easy to be around. He seems like a good choice for her future until his dashing brother, Darren, comes on the scene. The love scenes will make you sizzle as you read along! Now Eve must choose who is right for her overall, while also dealing with discovering new things about her real father, who abandoned her life at an early age. The romance and family drama builds to a wonderful conclusion. Juanita writes with heart and passion throughout her debut novel.
