5.0 out of 5 stars Consistently one of my favourite artists and albums, January 29, 2004

I am always disappointed that such a phenomenal artist is not better known.

The lyrics have meaning, and the songs have soul and emotion.

Very real music. But also chilled relaxed sounds

5.0 out of 5 stars Best band you've never heard, January 4, 2003

Saw the group live in Ft Laudedale ,and thought they were good on first listening. I bought 3 of there cds Slap in the face, this cd and the singles. After a couple of plays have been totally won over by all tracks.
Recommend buying the singles collection which is outstanding, every track 16 in all are absolutely fabulous. The other impressive thing is that they are all so different in style and pace.
Do yourself a favour and give this group a listen i guarantee you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ek se ... mooi!, January 31, 2002
This review is from: Torn & Tattered (Audio CD)
I love this one just as I adore the other two Henry Ate/Karma albums. I find it odd that it is virtually impossible to find either "Slap in the Face" or "One Day Soon" in the States. Let's give South African music more credit; there is much, much more than just Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Now, I realize most Americans don't have exposure to South African bands. But, you need to check out Henry Ate. Karma is absolutely awesome and you'll find the smooth, melodic songs music to your ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised, September 6, 2001

I love this album. Track 1 is a great beginning as she begins to sing of different problems she is having and all the things that are going wrong in her life. Track 2 is just rocking as she has the "Madhatter" serve the tea and tell her all the important things he knows. She doesn't want to hear it on this real catchy upbeat tune. Then she takes you to this happy, feel-good mood for tracks 3, 4, and 6. Track 5, "You Can Change," definitely changes with a twist of jazzy horns. Track 6, "Sunshine," is a fabulous song. I listened to it on repeat for hours one time. It flows so perfectly and is a lovely song about life. Tracks 8 and 9 get almost religious on you as she talks of prayer and living up to your ability. Then she finishes strong with the last five tracks. "I Should've Known" is almost latino, as she sings of the frustrations of love. Track 14 has some nice varieties as they play this sort-of Irish tune she wrote. The final track, "Happy," is just her (Karma-Ann Swanepoel, native of Johannesburg) and her guitar and it is brilliant. She puts her heart into the whole album, from the beginning (where she is frustrated, "torn and tattered") until the end (where she seems to have found peace and tranquility). Her voice is a twist of Indigo Girls, Natalie Merchant, and the Cranberries girl, is that's possible. The band is acoustic and electric guitars, bass, keyboards, and drums, with some appearances of violins, whistles, flutes, etc. They sound great. This is her third album, and by far her very best. This album is truly "lekker." The South Africans would understand. I was pleasantly surprised.
