I am writing this review to include information I would have liked to know but wasn't up when I bought. The usable surface area of the "flat" part of the curve is just about five inches. Also, the only hardware included is made for folks putting these in drywall, so if you're putting them in wood, be prepared to drill a 1/4" hole (it's bigger than it sounds). That is, you need an electric drill and bit to install directly in wood.
Once installed, they are great. Very sturdy. All I could find locally were those hooks with screw ends. I didn't think they would hold up long.

I purchased these hooks to hang a heavy 8 foot step ladder. I wanted hooks that had metal back plate. You can mount these in whatever, provided you use the proper anchors. I was mainly interested in the hook, I had planned to use my own anchors. The hooks are fine, no issues with them.

The included screws are basically low quality drywall anchors. They are probably ok for mounting into drywall with a very light load. The marketing on the package seem to be focused on these screws. Use common sense, and the appropriate anchors for the job. For my application, I used toggle bolts to mount one hook in drywall. The second hook was mounted into drywall + wood stud with 2 inch screws.

The product says it has a 7 inch projection from the wall. What is doesn't say is what is the length of flat surface that you can rest things on. My ladder collapses to a thickness of 5 1/4 inches and BARELY fits on the flat part of the hook.

The screws with "self tapping technology" are a load of crap. I tried to put one of these in and I could not get it to screw all the way into the stud... and this product IS advertised to be able to go into studs. I ditched all the screws that came with the hooks and I got 1/4 inch lag screws and washers instead. Now, I believe that the hooks will support weight. I would not have trusted the short screws that came with the hooks. They would barely have any purchase in studs once they got through the drywall.

Overall, product will work well to hang my ladder but not without significant time and additional hardware.

The finish on these hooks is not what it was a few years ago. I needed more hooks, and bought 3 packs. All 3 packs showed inferior quality over the ones bought a few years ago. The orange coating is thinner, and out of 6 hooks (3 packs of 2) I found 4 had holes in the coating. I've uploaded a picture to show what I mean.

It is worth noting that the back of the hook has a small pin to aid mounting in drywall or wood, it bites the material to prevent movement when inserting the hardware. I was attaching these on a metal surface, the pin can be easily knocked off with a hammer to allow the plate to sit flush on hard material.

The hooks is strong and sturdy. The aluminum screws they give you are crap. The tip of one of the screws broke off halfway into the wall stud. That meant I couldn't put another screw in the same place since the broken piece plugged up the whole, plus, I couldn't get it out. So I had to hang in another, less desirable place.

The problem is that there aren't other viable options that I saw. Again, the hook is good. But I recommend using your own screws.

As others have mentioned, the hooks themselves are great - very sturdy. They easily support my approx. 80lb extension ladder.

The screws/fasteners, however, are not of the same quality. They are so weak I stripped a couple with the first slip of the drill. If you're mounting to a stud, I would definitely recommend using lag bolts instead.

Because my ladder is mounted overhead in my garage, I decided to be extra safe and used a ratchet strap to help support the ladder to reduce the load on the hooks. I looped it over a crossbeam and around the ladder and tightened it just until the strap went taut. It makes me feel a lot more comfortable when people are underneath the ladder.

I bought a pair of these ladder hooks to hang a 24' extension ladder. I was attaching the hooks directly to 2x4 studs in my garage, pre-drilled with the proper bit per the directions and 2 of the 6 screws snapped off at the head before they were fully driven-in. The hooks themselves are great: they feel strong, have a rubberized coating which should prevent damage and slipping, and they're deep enough to hold the ladder. But the fasteners are junk. If I'm ever presented with the need to move the hooks, I'll buy different fasteners (maybe pan-head lag screws by Spax).

As you may read in other reviews, the fasteners are poor quality. They are cast, and most of them can be driven in just fine, but some of them will break. When they do, there's just about no way to get the stub out and no source for replacements if you do.

They might work very well in sheet rock; I wouldn't know. Just don't trust the fasteners in wood. And, yes, of course I pre-drilled per the instructions.
