4.0 out of 5 stars Scariest Day of my Life
I so wanted to give this book five stars. I remember this day so clearly - I was in fourth grade and thought the world would end! I'm terrified of tornadoes to this day! The book, though...this is about the book. This is a children's book about tornadoes with more general information and very little detail about the outbreak itself. To be perfectly honest, it's quite...

1.0 out of 5 stars Too brief to be useful to anyone
At about 1 p.m. on April 3, 1974 a tornado touched down in Morris, Illinois. During the next 18 hours, as the storm system moved east, it spun off 148 tornadoes in 13 different states, resulting in some 315-330 fatalities. This review is from: Tornado! (X-Treme Disasters That Changed America) (Library Binding)
At about 1 p.m. on April 3, 1974 a tornado touched down in Morris, Illinois. During the next 18 hours, as the storm system moved east, it spun off 148 tornadoes in 13 different states, resulting in some 315-330 fatalities. It was the largest single-24 hour outbreak in U.S. history. And among the town hardest hit was the city of Xenia, Ohio, which suffered significant damage and 34 deaths. This book tells children about tornadoes, in general, and the effects off the 1974 Super Outbreak on Xenia.

OK, I must say that I was terribly disappointed by this book. Some books for young adults still have a good deal of information in them - sadly, this book is not one of those. Its few pages do contain some useful information on tornadoes, useful to very young readers who know practically nothing about tornadoes. But, it contains practically nothing useful on the destruction of Xenia, and even less on the Super Outbreak outside of Xenia.

No, this book is simply too brief to be useful to anyone. I highly recommend *against* getting it.

I so wanted to give this book five stars. I remember this day so clearly - I was in fourth grade and thought the world would end! I'm terrified of tornadoes to this day! The book, though...this is about the book. This is a children's book about tornadoes with more general information and very little detail about the outbreak itself. To be perfectly honest, it's quite disjointed. No one else (to my knowledge) has written about this super outbreak, though. It's all I have to confirm that scary day - I had wondered if I had imagined it. (I wasn't in one of the tornadoes - I was scared of the tornado I thought was coming.)
