Deadly Storms...for Younger Readers!,

Throughout history, tornadoes and hurricanes have brought about horrendous death and destruction worldwide. Gary Jeffrey examines TORNADOES & SUPERSTORMS in this 2007 entry in Rosen Publishing's 'Graphic Natural Disasters' series. Like others in the series, it's intended for readers in the 9-12 age group.
After four pages of text and photographs detailing the nature/history of tornadoes and superstorms, the book presents Graphic Novel stories on the Tri-State Tornado of 1925, the Halloween Storm of 1991 and the 1997 Jarrell Killer Tornado. Illustrator Terry Riley does a good job of presenting the reality of such storms. People in peril are depicted but the presentation isn't sensationalistic. Readers in the 9-12 group should be able to handle the material. The book wraps up with a section on weather warning technology, a glossary and a 'For Further Information' section. TORNADOES & SUPERSTORMS does an effective, dramatic job of introducing those deadly winds to younger readers. Recommended. |
