Battery lasts a long time and recharges quickly.
First, the adjustability is great and works well as you can set the shaft to the perfect height and then adjust the handle to most comfortable position.

Light, effective, very easy to handle, good battery life.

So I have looked over every brand out there and settled on this Toro based on 4 people giving it "5 star" reviews.

I am a current Toro owner with a 2 stroke GAS power head and 4 different attachments (trimmer, edger, blower and tiller). I love it but am ready for something lighter, easier to store and easier to deal with (no gas mixes, pulling starter cords, etc).

So I was excited to look into this product and could not wait to use it!

BUT here is what I found;

1) I am 5'4"... and the design of the shaft/angle made it feel like I was hunching over to get to the sweet spot for a good clean edge. My gas Toro you can twist around easily (although heavier) but the shaft length gave me that ability to do so. This thing feels like a toy (sort of) by comparison. DO NOT confuse this for a power to power comparison. This thing has plenty of power, I am sure that the 20v lithium battery is also up to the challenge... but when you get this in your hands and you are confined to using it within its operational range (angle of head and short length of shaft) it feels like a toy and you are compromising your body position to try to get the best angle of attack on your lawn. This did not work for me.

2) I need a trimmer and edger combo.... the trimmer was OK for wacking against a fence line or brick BUT was not very good around flower beds and weird spots due to the limitations stated above.... BUT what was absolutely horrible was the edger ability. The head has a significant amount of play.... so when you are rolling down the sidewalk to get that "straight line".... good luck! The slop in the moving rotating head makes it hard to stabilize. On top of that poor design the edger has a SMALL single wheel that you are balancing on.

Size Name: 20V Trimmer
The Toro 53484 string trimmer is the best battery operated trimmer I've used. I haven't tried too many, but I do greatly prefer the Toro over similar Li-ion Ryobi and Black & Decker models, which I give 4 and 3 stars respectively. Even though they are all 20 volts, the Toro seems to have much more oomph not to mention better battery life.

Appearance wise, this looks like a typical Toro device. It's a glossy red with black and an aluminum shaft. This trimmer was very well designed for several reasons. First, the adjustability is great and works well as you can set the shaft to the perfect height and then adjust the handle to most comfortable position. The aluminum shaft is super strong yet very lightweight which makes it a joy to carry this thing around. For edging, you simple push a button on the head and flip it 90 degrees - this could not be easier. The one thing that concerns me is the venting around the motor. It tends to get covered with grass that may not be really dry. It's not a huge deal, but I do suggest you brush it out of the venting after each use to prevent future problems with overheating.

I was surprised at just how well this Toro trimmer worked. The first time I got it I wanted to try it out and I did so on a patch of thick, wet grass and weeds. The Toro cut through it like butter with minimal bogging down. Of course if you have tons of thick heavy grass, you'd want either a gas model or one of the new 36 Volt Li-ion's that are on the market but for the average homeowner, this model will be perfect.

Many times these trimmer/edgers just don't get the job done for edging. This model actually worked very well.

Size Name: 20V Hedge Verified Purchase
I bought this because I was tired of fighting a 100' extension cord while climbing a ladder to trim the 85' of 8' hedges we have in back. I'd be stepping on the extension, tangling it on the ladder, tripping all over it, wrapping it around trees and patio furniture. Cutting the hedges was a nightmare. But because I like neat and manicured hedges, I was doing this every 4 to 6 weeks. This Toro has changed my yardwork world!

When I found the 22", 20v lithium-ion Toro at Amazon, I decided to try it. I thought it was a better price than the 24v model, and if I wanted to buy other compatible devices (it, string trimmer) they were cheaper too. I settled on the Toro because of reviews for similar yard products.

I trimmed the hedges in less than 1/2 the time it took me with the corded Remington I've had for years. It's strong enough to cut through the branches, which in our case only reach about 3/8". We're not cutting fat branches, so no issue there. The battery life was awesome! I used it off and on for about 40 mins, and the last minute was as strong as the first. It's so balanced and (relatively) light, I was able to hold the ladder with one hand and trim with the other, giving me a good 5' of reach. I was skeptical of the rotating handle, thinking it gimmicky and unnecessary, but minutes intoo the job I found myself making frequent use of the feature to trim the hedge row face.

Great product, I hope it stands up to the test of time.

Size Name: 20V Hedge Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I already owned the Black & Decker LHT120 HedgeHog Hedge Trimmer (also 22-Inch, 20-Volt), so this spring's first backyard trim seemed like a good time to compare the two. I found that the Toro had some ergonomic advantages, but was in general heavier and not as well balanced.

- Blades. The B&D blades are notably thicker than the Toro blades, though both are the same length. The B&D blades are a shiny machine metal, and the instruction booklet included instructions on how to resharpen a broken blade tooth. The Toro blades are powder-coated with no option to resharpen. The B&D blades also cut better on the hard-stem blackberry bushes (sorry guys), though both did equally well on softer growth. You do have to let the blades work at their their own speed and not force them forward.

- Battery. The B&D takes many hours to charge, and you really just want to let it go overnight. The Toro charges notably faster, and has a charge indicator on the battery, which is a certainly plus. The B&D batteries hold a charge for an impressively long time - I haven't had the Toro long enough to do an overwinter 6-month charge test yet.

- Ergnonomics/safety. Both trimmers have a thumb-lock that you have to push down before pushing the actual trigger on the handle (always a good thing), and both will let you let go of the thumblock once the main trigger is down. The Toro thumb lock is just a hair too close to the trigger to fit my hand perfectly, and the B&D is just a hair too far away. I note I'm a petit female, but with unusually long fingers for my size.
