It delivers consistent power for larger jobs when you need extended run time, and its 12-inch cutting width gets the job done quickly. There's no gas or oil to maintain, and at 8 pounds, it weighs a lot less than a gas trimmer. Even more, the unit runs quietly, which both you and your neighbors will appreciate.

Better yet, with no extension cord to get in the way, you can easily maneuver the trimmer down the driveway, up the front walk, along the side of the house, next to the fence line, and anywhere else that needs to be quickly and neatly trimmed. The unit also converts to an edger in a matter of seconds--simply push the button, and voila. A smooth-rolling wheel guides the edger for precise results.

At 58 I consider myself a seasoned homeowner with tons of experience using the tried and true gas powered weedwhackers. Only problem with them is getting the darn things started. After that's done, it's all downhill. I passed on battery powered yard equipment until now, when I thought the technology had improved, and I'm pleased to say it has. I purchased the Toro 51486 24volt weedwhacker and here's my review after initial use. I'm afraid I put off weedeating chores longer than I usually do because I so treaded the gas powered starting ritual which led me to buying the Toro. The weeds had grown about 3 feet high and thick. Normally my gas powered weedwhacker would plow them to dust like a hot knife through butter and the Toro 24volt did eventually cut them enough for me to not have the neighbors slow down and stare at my lawn but it took extra work on my part. I'd say you can expect about 60% of the cutting ability with the Toro over a gas powered trimmer which ain't bad if you don't have alot of really thick stuff to hack. But hey, it's battery may make up for this power shortage since you'll save alot of money on gas and no more "arm-strength" draining starting sessions. I think I can live with this Toro if I keep up on the weeds better. Now the good news and there's alot. The Toro 51486 is very well designed and is built to endure alot of rugged abuse. The head can easily be turned 90 degrees to edge with the flick of a switch and they even built in a wheel to allow you to make easy straight passes. Nice. The battery held up pretty darn well too. I did about 30 minutes of heavy cutting and the battery strength meter (another nice touch) was still showing 3 out of 4 bars left indicating to me I could probably get almost an hours worth of heavy cutting which is all I could ever expect.Read more ›

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Wow. This Trimmer is excellent!! Not flawless, but excellent. I own a Black & Decker model. Standard model, non-adjustable height. Can convert easily from edger to trimmer. But this one by Toro, man it is great. It swivels with a push of a button. Only one way because it uses a spring action. Again. Only one way. Battery is a 24 volt lithium battery. Comes with a charger, battery all you need to get it going.

I like the telescoping adjustment for length. It comes with a power save mode, which is basically just a string trimmer adjustment. Supposedly you save power if the string is shorter than longer. I guess. I keep in long.

The edging feature is different. You press the button and it turns into edging position and has a wheel where you can push from behind to edge. I found this a bit difficult to get used to since you can't see where you are going and sometimes it wiggles. Great concept, but there is a learning curve. I guess I have to get used to it.

The other thing I feel is a bit lacking is the string length adjustment. You have to stop the device. Wait until you hear a "click" and then start it up again. This can get a bit frustrating when the string starts to shorten from use.

One thing I would like to see is a "guide" to know where to keep the edger straight when edging. I like edging from the side as opposed to the rear. That is the only issue with this trimmer.

I like the battery because it has a button that you can press to see the power level. Very nice feature.

The trimmer is light so it is not cumbersome to use over a length of time. I do recommend this unit. Just remember the learning curve with using the edger.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Our old trimmer recently died. It was probably a decade-old and this Spring just gave up the ghost. We don't have a huge yard in either the front or the back so our goal was to get a decent one that could handle two small yards. Since we needed one anyway and it matched our criteria, when I saw this one I decided to give it a try. So how did it do?

First off, it comes tightly packed in the box that weighs about 13 pounds. The box was relatively easy to get open, just three pieces of tape on the top and three pieces on the bottom. Just a tip, you're probably better off pulling it out of the bottom of the box than the top. The package contains the device, the secondary handle, the guard, battery and charger, and a wall mounting thing with screws. The only real tool you're going to need to assemble the trimmer is a Phillips head screwdriver. From opening the box, to fully assembled unit, took me roughly half an hour. A very good start.

Next charging the battery. The battery charges in a unit separate from the device itself. I have a cordless lawnmower, which set a pretty high bar by being able to charge either inside the mower or outside. I'd rather it could charge the battery while still in the trimmer, but it's not a huge deal. It takes a little bit of force to put the battery into its charger, so be ready to push a little bit, because you won't hurt it as long as you have it in the right way. To remove the battery you have to pull up on a little lever on the side that doesn't go into the charger to release.

The manual says it takes 3 hours to charge, but my first charge only took about two hours. According to my
