After using a 48" belly mower for the past 10 years, I decided to step up to the Zero turn experience. I researched over 8 major brands of ZT's, most of which I was able to test drive the handling, feel and speed of the units available in my area. I considered products from the B&M store offerings along with independent retailer outlet businesses in my searches. Service, product reliability, warranty and quality of build and cut were my main objectives. Although my property lawn care needs are relatively simple, I didn't consider entry level units but focused on mid-entry ZT's that approached component selections and features of their pro-line brothers, but with more reasonable price tags!

I started with the Toro line of ZT's and then went out for a couple of weeks to shop the competition. After absorbing many specs, driving dealer demos, reading many on line reviews and talking with a host of dealer and lawn care professionals, I came back to the Toro ZT's. Overall, the Toro MX 5060 50" gives me what I was looking for...the heavy duty build features in a non pro package. With the 23hp Kawasaki FR691V, 10 gauge welded deck, Hydro-Gear ZT-2800 HD transmissions, large and wide rear and front tires, dual speed selection, comfortable 18" contoured seat, hour meter and a high quality fit and finish, I made my choice. A solid warranty, great local dealer service and competitive pricing just sealed the deal!

As of this review, I've only put 5 hours of real world cutting on her (bought near end of 2012 growth season). Although my landscape borders my home, I have only 3 trees to cut around in the open lot and thought I could save a little cutting time with the speed and agility of the zero turn.

For the past 25 years I have worked managing and maintaining a 10 acre state park so when I decided to purchase a new mower for my 2 ½ acres consisting of thick Bermuda grass with several building and obstacles I started looking for something with the closest specifications to my favorite mower a 10 year old John Deere 717A only without the sticker shock. What I found was the Toro MX5056 and for less than half the cost of a comparable commercial mower. The 23hp Kawasaki engine has plenty of power yet very quiet, the 50" deck cuts very even and clean, haven't tried the garden hose attachment on the deck yet and probably won't since Toro neglected to install grease fitting for the mower deck spindle. The seat is very comfortable so that even after a couple hours mowing you are not worn out, the transmission is very smooth and responsive, however you do have to be careful when straddling uneven terrain as there is not very much ground clearance around the transmission, actually got stuck once by high centering a 4" rise which required the use of a tractor and bucket to get it free, this mower weighs close to 800 lbs. so forget about trying to manhandle it. Bottom line if you want a heavy built residential mower without the commercial mower price this is the mower for you. The only thing I had an issue with was the ground clearance under the transmissions which is not that big a deal once you know about it and the absence of grease fitting which would greatly extend its life expectancy.

This review is nothing against Mower Source or the performance of the mower itself. This is purely about the typical response many of us consumers get when we have an issue from the customer service dept. of many large corporations. I purchased the mulching attachment kit for this mower. Does it mulch? Yes! Is it of poor design and quality of materials? Yes! This kit dramatically shrinks the dimensions of the deck. The compact reconfiguration of the deck allows grass clippings to accumulate and pack under the deck. This, in the rainy season of Florida, creates an extensive amount of effort to constantly unblock the deck of buildup of clippings. No other mulching attachment on any other mower I have used in 25 years of living in Florida has done this. After 5 months of ownership, and the constant work of getting under this mower to clean it, I decided to remove the attachment. The attachment, I discovered has damaged the deck. The design allows moisture to get between the deck and attachment when bolted together starting premature corrosion. The attachment itself is so corroded you would think it has been on the mower for 10 years ! After submitting my concerns to Toro consumer service, the response I got was shocking, however, in today's world, not surprising. The representative offered no solutions and basically led you to believe that the fault lied with you the owner and not Toro, insinuating that it must be improper cleaning, salt, sand, termites, astronomical events, etc. etc. and not poor design. Instead of simply offering to return the attachment for a refund or something to acknowledge the $3500 spent 5 months ago; nothing. When, or maybe they simply don't care, are companies going to realize that it's the service after the purchase which is so vital to keeping us loyal for life. I wish now I had bought the John Deere. bought it because it had the welded deck and Kawasaki motor. Would not buy again because the spindles wont last 28 hours. they are absolute crap the blade is held in by pressure on the bearings being pinched from the pulley and the blade. major design flaw! when it cuts it cuts, when it breaks it breaks and it will often!! would not recommend to my enemy!!!
