Book Description

3 and up
The animals of the forest argue about who is the best mail carrier--the slow but accurate tortoise, the speedy but careless rabbit, the fox who steals the packages, or the crow who drops the mail."

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2. The importance of honesty, reliability, modesty, accuracy, and kindness is subtly brought out in this story of a cheerful tortoise who loves his job as mail carrier to the forest creatures. But he moves too slowly for their tastes. Willingly, he cedes his responsibility to three swifter animals. Crow, however, drops letters everywhere, Rabbit puts mail in the wrong boxes, and Fox keeps all the good packages for himself. Each time Tortoise follows behind them, happily correcting their errors, and soon all realize that he is the best one for the job. The handsome format has a decorative, clear typeface and a variety of artistic, bold, bright full- and half-page illustrations. The simple, crisply outlined, expressive figures and clever touches of humor add zest and charm to the relaxed easy-to-read text.?Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA

From Booklist

Ages 4^-6. Tortoise, who loves his job, is careful to put everything in the right boxes. There's just one problem: everyone thinks he's too slow. Other animals try to fill his shoes, with disastrous results: Crow drops mail everywhere as he flies, and Rabbit runs so fast she puts the mail in the wrong boxes. Finally the job falls to Fox, who everyone thinks is perfect--until Tortoise discovers a house filled with packages Fox has kept for himself. Youngsters will cheer for the underdog Tortoise and relish the ending, in which everyone agrees that slow, steady Tortoise is the best one for the job. Lund's bright, playful illustrations add to the fun, contributing extra humor through the characters' facial expressions. Lauren Peterson

This review is from: Tortoise Brings the Mail: 2 (Hardcover)
This is a lovely book that I would recomend to anyone with small children. The story is a simple one, about a tortoise who delivers the mail throughout the forest, but the animals begin to get impatient with him and wish to have faster service. The Tortoise only wants what is best for the animals, so he agrees to let another animal take the job. After several animals do the job in a sloppy and careless mannor, the animals of the forest ask Tortoise to deliver their mail again. It gives you a chance to talk to your child about patience, kindness and forgiveness. A fantastic choice for any child!
