Book Description

August 7, 2009

The true story of the pool table rape and murder of Margaret Anderson. Left for dead, practically beheaded in a manure pile, Margaret fights for life. But in the end, the single mother leaves behind a son. Author Dauplaise practically makes Margaret blow a breath at readers as he recreates the night she was killed. He then takes readers to the place she was trying to escape back to, her home state of Montana and finally, on the investigative hunt of a lifetime as this America's Most Wanted drama ends with the capture of her killer five years later.

Readers will remember the case. Dauplaise infiltrates the motorcycle gang (club) culture of the 1980s to expose what happened to Anderson and why she was just six months away from disappearing back to Montana. True-crime enthusiasts will revel in the detail and the hunt.

Vivid. Enthralling. Horrific.

"Mike Dauplaise has a microscopic ability to see and know the truth as it exists, not as it seems. He presents here a murder story that needs to be told."

Review

"Mike Dauplaise has a microscopic ability to see and know the truth as it exists, not as it seems. He presents here a murder story that needs to be told, must be told, for it represents the worst of human nature. The only thing colder than the killers' hearts is the blistery, frigid air surrounding Green Bay, Wisconsin, that terrible winter. Here there is no fat; the writing is lean and moves to the point swiftly."--Philip Carlo
Author of The Night Stalker, The Ice Man and The Butcher: Anatomy of a Mafia Psychopath

"With an unsparing eye, Dauplaise tells a penetrating story set in a blustery outpost of America about a murderer named Gargoyle, motorcycle gangs, an undercover operation conducted with a wife in tow, a hit man who runs out with a deposit, and a woman who deserved far better than her depraved end." - Marek Fuchs, author of A Cold-Blooded Business

"A despicable cast of characters, a misogynistic culture, a horrendous crime - Dauplaise lays it all bare in shocking detail as law enforcement struggles for four-and-a-half years to find justice for a brutally victimized woman. Torture at the Back Forty is a stunning story in an otherwise bucolic blue-collar town." - Diane Fanning, author of Edgar Award finalist Written in Blood

"While well written and a true page turner, this book is not for the faint of heart. I would prefer to fight a pack of hungry wolves before facing the men Margaret fought with on the night of her death." - Chuck Whitlock, author of Police Heroes and Scam School

"Keep your eyes on author Mike Dauplaise. He's one to watch. He's taken an obscure crime story and crafted a smart and riveting narrative that dares you to put it down." - Gregg Olsen, NY Times Bestselling Author of Abandoned Prayers

"Who murdered Margaret Anderson? And why? Dauplaise vividly recounts the details of this horrific crime. He depicts a twilight world where women are second-class citizens and life is cheap. Read it and weep." - Carol Anne Davis, U.K.-based Author of Sadistic Killers and Children Who Kill

More About the Author

Mike Dauplaise is a freelance writer who began his career in 1979 as a reporter for the Green Bay (Wis.) Press-Gazette. He currently specializes in article, brochure and video script writing for a variety of corporate, educational and health care industry clients across the United States.

In researching his new true crime book, "Torture at the Back Forty," Dauplaise left virtually no stone unturned in his quest to tell the complete story of Margaret Anderson and the events surrounding her grisly murder during the Christmas holiday of 1983. In addition to spending hundreds of hours poring through police and court records, he interviewed approximately 40 people in an exhaustive effort to cover all sides of the story. His interview subjects included Margaret's family and friends in her native northeastern Montana, and individuals in the law enforcement and motorcycle club communities.

"Torture at the Back Forty" is Dauplaise's second book. His first work came as co-author of "Bodyguard to the Packers" with long-time Green Bay Packers security director and former Green Bay Police detective Jerry Parins.

Dauplaise is a Green Bay native and graduate of St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. He and his wife, Bonnie Groessl, live in Green Bay, where he enjoys running and golf when not at his computer. Visit him on the Web at www.mikedauplaise.com.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, November 15, 2009
This review is from: Torture at the Back Forty: The Gang Rape and Slaying of Margaret Anderson (Paperback)
Well I am shocked by all those raving reviews. I am so disappointed with this book just because of them. I expected a great book but it wasn't great at all. The author just touched a little bit on the crime (they did not really know what really happened) People say they got to know the victim Margaret? well not at all. Maybe 1 chapter was about her but then you still do not really get to know her.
Most chapters are (it is a very short book only 165 pages) are that the cops are wondering where they were hiding, and you get to hear many different names which makes it confusing and to be honest not very interesting, plus most people were lying to the cops. Then they find them and you get the trial. Well most boring trial ever. I plead the 5th is all they say.

I was glad I finished it and am a bit pissed of that I spend my money on this based on the amazon reviewers. Are these all reviewers who get the book for free before the book is published? I hardly write reviews because my English is not good enough to really say adequate what I mean but in this case I had to.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for true-crime fans, September 1, 2009
This review is from: Torture at the Back Forty: The Gang Rape and Slaying of Margaret Anderson (Paperback)
Mike Dauplaise tells a story about a 1983 crime so horrific, people who lived in Green Bay at the time, as I did, remember it to this day. He tells of a motorcycle culture that cared for little about their women, and how Margaret Anderson stumbled into the middle of it, with horrifying results. He gives the details true-crime readers want - as gruesome as they may be. He paints a picture so vivid that the reader feels as though they're there. And when justice is meted out in the end to those who committed her murder, as a reader, I nearly cheered.

Central thoughout the story, however, and never forgotten, was Margaret. A woman in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her story needed to be told, and Dauplaise does it with flair.

This review is from: Torture at the Back Forty: The Gang Rape and Slaying of Margaret Anderson (Paperback)
Author Dauplaise delves into the complex details surrounding this horrific crime and presents them in a clear, concise manner. From the onset, the reader is impacted by the vicious brutality inflicted on Margaret Anderson. Mike Dauplaise humanizes this woman. The biker subculture and attitude of the time is explored and the story of the manhunt to capture those involved adds to the intrigue.
