This review is from: Tortured Skin (Paperback)
Tortured Skin has some very interesting ideas. Vampires have become members of civilized society, almost looked at as rare relic, and protected by both human and vampire law. Paul Isaac is a Vampire Hunter who is not really liked by vampires OR humans. He has issues. Well, anybody would have issues if one's parents had been killed by vampires and you were too young to do anything about it but run.
Now he is forced into a corner, forced to work for the vampires, like it or not. Blazing guns, sex, mystery, vampires, shape shifters, good guys, bad guys, some human, some not, this book is non-stop action from the first page to the last. That is the only flaw - sometimes the reader needs a break to relax, absorb the information and get ready for the next chapter of gore, teeth and claws. Get it used or new.

A society where humans and vampires openly co-exist,
By Amy D. (Orlando) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tortured Skin (Paperback)
This book instantly draws you into a fantastic world of vampires and werewolves. The author masterfully creates a world in which humans and supernatural creatures co-exist in a legally regulated environment. (You can see this as a metaphor for the legalization of any controversial topic, but that's me extrapolating.)
As with any well-developed character, vampire-hunter Paul Isaac frequently blurs the lines between right and wrong, which is easy to do in this type of society. Isaac is a fascinating character you want to root for, a tough "cop" who trusts very few people. He is surrounded by a rich cast of characters, some of whom are vampires, werewolves, humans, or a combination. As he knows, you can't always tell who's who. The author gives Isaac a fine sense of humor, which provides little breaks in the intense action. It's also interesting to see Isaac's investigatory instincts at work. This is mainly a story about vampires, so it accepts some of the time-worn vampire lore--they are repelled by holy water and crucifixes--and adds some nuances that make it a unique vampire world--a vampire can enter your home without having previously being invited in. The promotional summary on the back of the book promises that the vampire's world is one of pain and pleasure, so be prepared for some gore and kinky activities. The title, Tortured Skin, is a great expression for what it must be like to be a vampire or other morphing creature and has a deeper meaning in the book. All in all, this is a great book. If you like the supernatural or horror genres, or even standard detective stories, you will enjoy it.

NOT SHINY VAMPS!!,

This review is from: Tortured Skin (Paperback)
These books bring back the days when vampires were actually scary. They weren't "vegetarians" and they definitely were not shiny!! These books are for those who enjoy reading about the human condition and the condition of being a "monster". They are page turners at their best and you won't get much done as you won't want to put them down. Please keep these wonderful books coming.

Good Clean gore fest with Vampires,

This review is from: Tortured Skin (Paperback)
Sexy Vampire story oh you betcha, in all honesty this is one very different book from what many would expect from a sexy vampire romp. Lots of angst in this one as society tries to cope with a semi-peaceful coexistence with Vampires living with people in an everyday situation. Well all except for one guy, Paul Isaac, Vampire Executioner. James Gillen does a good job of putting together some very interesting characters throughout the book, and it will leave you wanting to see what happens after you have read the final page. The book is nonstop full on action packed good clean horror novel fun.
There is lots of blood, lots of gore, lots of everything that makes a vampire hunting book worth reading for many people. Even down to the body parts flying and sprays of blood everywhere, can't be beat for a graphic viewpoint in line with what you would have read with some of the other modern Anime novels like Van Helsing. In all not a bad book at all, worth picking up and taking a look at, if for nothing else, the characters are very believable in the story line, you start to sympathize with them and the concerns that they have throughout the book. Rated 5 of 5 stars just for the violence and sexy vampire lifestyle alone add to that decent characters and a graphic story telling ability, you cannot beat that combination. This looks like it is James Gillen's first book, and published by Kerlak Enterprises; it will be interesting to see what else happens in the vampire world that he has created. This is a very addictive book, once you get into it, you won't want to put this one down.

I have to give this book to GIANT thumbs up (if I had three, I'd give em all) I honestly felt like I was one of the people standing in the Orlando streets watching Paul Isaac chase a kid through the crowd. Or maybe even been one of the people at the club when Angie (who is an amazing character by the way) is climbing all over him. I LOVE Paul Isaac's voice and attitude. I love how blunt and nonchalant he can be. Mr. Gillen did a FINE job setting up a world that I felt like I could be a bystander in. And another great thing about it is I understoon why the main character acted the way he did. I wasn't left with any "whys". I must say it was a refreshing, fast paced change from the horrors of teeny vamp lit. Thank god someone is finally writing for the grown-ups : )
