5.0 out of 5 stars Great little TV for the money!

2.0 out of 5 stars Brightness
I returned one of these due to the washed out picture. If you added brightness, the picture was washed out. If you the added contrast, it was too dark. I received a second one and it has the same problem. My wife is OK with this now, so we are keeping it. I would not recommend this unit for the reason above

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little TV for the money!, May 1, 2009

This review is from: Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
I compared the picture quality of the Toshiba 19AV600U side by side with Samsung (at our local Best Buy) after tweaking both to their maximum quality and the Toshiba had truer colors with accurate flesh tones, probably due to the 10 bit color. The sound was also much better (and louder) than other TV's of the same size. If you can live without the headphone jack, then this will be a great choice, especially for a small bedroom or kitchen.

One more thing that impressed me and my daughter was how the TV cleaned up the standard analog cable channels, apparently due to the noise reduction feature, which we put on high. Some of the channels even look as good as digital or HD. The 19AV600U also has (2) HDMI jacks and is a great looking little TV even when it's off. We mostly buy SONY but was settling for Samsung (since Sony is not that impressive in this size range) until I ran across this little jewel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Set Savings!, September 16, 2009

This review is from: Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
Length:: 3:00 Mins

This video explains how much I enjoy this HDTV and the aspects on why you should consider it in your own home.
If you would like to know more go to your local stores, or read some more of this great reviews.

I forgot to mention in the review that the tuner inside picks up many channels and the HD channels off air are amazing! Just as great as a 1080p set, but listed as a 720 it works 1080 gorgeous.

Amazon.com has the most affordable price listed on this set.
I know how valuable time is, so this review and all of mine is done is 3 minutes even.
Go ahead time me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding value, September 6, 2009
This review is from: Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
After shopping all over the net and all the major retail chains, I was never able to find a small, affordable LCD for a bedroom. Everybody had 42" sets for $500, nobody had anything decent for around $200. Finally ended up at a regional electronics chain where I found this gem buried in the back with Coby, Viore and other junk brands. This Toshiba was the best by far, rivaling much larger sets. In the end, I had to choose between this Toshiba and a similar Philips. What made the deal was the complete range of inputs on the Toshiba: S-video (a must for me), VGA, two sets each of HDMI, and component, and 1 composite for games or whatnot. Many lower-end sets sacrifice some or all of these inputs meaning you'll have to go swapping plugs all the time. This Toshiba has it all covered.

Setup was easy. The stand pops down and has a slide lock. Plug in the power (two-prong plug) and video source and go. After letting it warm up, picture quality out of the box was very good. The brightness was a touch high but that's normal for a new TV. It found all the local HDTV channels very quickly (something my old HDTV converter could never get the same twice) and properly labeled all of them. A basic thing but important. OTA picture is great, very solid and clear. 1080i signals look great even with down-conversion. Connected to my satellite box over the S-video, the picture is sharp and bright and looks as good as I have ever seen it. The set appears to handle legacy 480i signals just fine which is more important to me than HD performance.

Connected to a Wii over component video, the 480p signal looks as good as the Wii can. Not pushing the set very hard here. Have not tested the HDMI connection since I don't have any HDMI devices. Also have not tried out the PC VGA connection.

Sound-wise, it does sound tinny as other reviews have said, which is why I only gave it four stars. But the set does have an optical out feed for use with a stereo system, and RCA audio out as well. Lots of ways to run the sound through something better. I am sort of glad the set is more concerned with picture than sound. Toshiba seems to have thought this way on purpose: you can totally disable the TV's internal speakers via the audio menu. That said, the speakers are fine for everyday use. Most people can live with them just the way they are if they turn the bass up to full.

The remote is functional and decently laid-out. The only notable thing is that you have to use the input button to switch inputs. Many TVs let you use the channel up/down buttons for this. Not Toshiba. The remote will control a Toshiba DVD player if you happen to have one. My Tivo was able to adopt the Toshiba remote codes on the first try.

For me, one test of how well a product works is how far into it I can get before looking at the manual. Most men are probably like this. Happily, I have not yet needed the book. The setup menus are intuitive and clear and simple.

Conclusion: an excellent choice for a kitchen or bedroom or anyone on a budget. The value for the price is outstanding and there are very few compromises. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great TV for the Price, June 6, 2009

This review is from: Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
I purchased this TV after much comparison shopping and reading of reviews of various models on Amazon and other web sites. I settled on this model and am very pleased. I use the TV in our kitchen and it has an excellent picture (given the price) and I have not encountered any issues with sound volume. The sound could be criticized as being a little "tinny", but, that said, I would not count this as a material criticism. Frankly, you might consider getting the 22" model if it fits both your budget and the space that you have. In conclusion, you should not hesitate to purchase this TV. Note, however, that I found the TV at a slightly cheaper price at Fry's (in-store price not on-line price).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, October 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
Started looking for a television to replace an older model. Went to Best Buy to compare picture and sound quality side by side, and settled on this model. The ability to change the framing of the picture allows each individual to see what style they prefer, at the click of a button. The color quality is a true color representation, and again it is easy to change the brightness if you like. We chose to mount it on the wall, and with the thickness of just over an inch, it is not in the way when walking in front of it.

Amazon had the best price, by $50 over Best Buy when we were looking, and we were well satisfied with the delivery. Ordered at 5:00 p.m. one day, and had received it by noon the following day.

Would highly recommend this model to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Little TV!!, July 30, 2009

I just returned a piece of junk Coby 15" TV and purchased the Toshiba 19" 19AV600U for my kitchen. What a great TV. The picture is awesome, the viewing angle is great, and the feature set is better than most similar TVs. I really like being able to re-label the channel descriptions because I don't have a cable box and the HD channels are all over the place. I can label them and then save them to the favorites, which makes them easy to scroll thru. I thought I would save money with the Coby but what a piece of junk. It had a very poor picture and a terribly limited viewing angle. The coby stopped working after two days. I am very happy with the Toshiba and I'm sure you will be too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great picture, excellent cable, October 16, 2009
This review is from: Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
I have Comcast cable in Mass., and like another reviewer I was surprised how many channels including HD it picked up during channel search. More than any other TV or VCR in the house without a digital cable box.
Small TVs often have trouble fitting speaker systems into the available space, but this one is fine. I have it in my bedroom and have not put the sound higher than 30% from the lowest setting, even when doing tasks like folding clothes and watching while my son uses the main TV for video games 20 feet away.
Maybe more of an issue with my cable carrier than the TV, I have 2 or 3 locations for each channel, a regular a digital, and in some cases an HD. So I have to remove a lot of channels from the active list. The 'regular' ones have their titles like 'Bravo' and "TNT" but I have to add those names to the digital stations which are on some odd number like 75-2 but are the ones I want to keep.
The TV permits custom labeling so I can add CH 55 for name of channel, I just wish the click to remove unwanted channels from the lineup was in the same menu as naming a channel, so I could make my lineup short and descriptive easily.
It also permits a small menu of favorites, but the Fav key doesn't toggle thru the list; one has to move one's hand from the Fav button to the arrow buttons surrounding the circle.
Laying in bed in the dark it would be handy to toggle thru 10 or 15 Fav channels by pressing one button over and over rather than blindly hunt for the arrow keys after hitting the Fav button, which times out before a newbie like me can find the right arrow. Maybe I'll get faster.
I too viewed several TVs at Best Buy prior to buying, and this one had better detail and color rendition than most of the others. I'm going to wall mount it one of these days. It is made with metric screw threads all over, but the TV comes with 4 screws in the mount holes because most US homes don't have a stash of metric screws, a very customer-friendly thing to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very impressed so far, July 16, 2009
By
This review is from: Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
Just picked this up at Best Buy for around $225 (only because I happened to need it quickly one night) and I have been very impressed so far. The picture - both with an over the air antenna and with an upscaling DVD player with an HDMI connection - has been incredible. When you look at these sets up close in the store, they look a bit grainy. But when you're at the proper viewing distance (6-8 feet in this case), they look razor sharp as they should. I've been amazed at the quality, and glad I waited for this one to come down in price and relied on the earlier reviews here and elsewhere.

Sound is good enough, though if you put in a CD in your DVD player to listen to through the TV you will definitely notice it's not as good as even a small stereo. Other reviews suggest this is as good as it gets. There are no volume problems though - I had considered getting the TV/DVD combo version of this, but some of the reviews suggested there were problems with the volume when playing DVDs. This one has no issues like that when hooked up to a DVD player. Most things I watch at quarter to half volume, so no worries about not being able to hear it.

All in all, an excellent purchase, especially given the price. I've only had it a few weeks - if I'd had it longer I'd give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything about it is great., December 25, 2009
This review is from: Toshiba 19AV600U 19-Inch 720p Portable LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
I bought this TV not too long ago. And so far, its been a positive experience. For the past 5 years, I have been using this tiny little 15 inch Magnavox TV. Granted, the old TV is still in working condition, even though the closed captions are permanently stuck on. But it was time to upgrade. An Xbox 360 cannot be used to its full potential on a tiny little standard definition TV.

So after some research and looking around, I came across this TV. I heard Toshiba was a reliable brand, so I went for it. I wasn't disappointed. I'm going to categorize some key points on what I thought of this TV.

INPUTS: First thing that drew me to the TV is the inputs. The disappointing thing about TVs in this size range is that they have usually only have 1 of each input (HDMI, composite, etc). However, this TV has basically two of every input except VGA and S-Video, which it only has 1 of each (however you generally do not need more than one of those anyway). So if you have a lot of devices that need to be plugged in, you will have plenty of inputs without needing an external switch. Also, I will note, do not spend more than $10 for a HDMI cable. A cheap one off of Amazon will do just as well as a Monster Cable one. Also, you can use a computer's DVI out on this TV as well. All you need is a DVI-HDMI cable and the TV will treat it as a HD source.

PICTURE: The picture is vibrant and bright for most conditions. Granted that you set it up right. I used one of those "THX Optimizers" that come on Pixar DVD's. It will walk you through setting up the the brightness and contrast, since those are the most critical parts of setting up an HDTV. It will make blacks as close to black as possible and colors not washed out. Remember, brighter, does not make a better picture! Also, it does have a feature to make analog cable channels have a little less static which makes them look somewhat better. It also has a "gaming mode" which will disable unnecessary video processing features in order to reduce the TVs response time, which is good for gamers. If you want to use this TV as a computer monitor, make sure you set the TV to "Dot by Dot" in the picture size settings. This will ensure you have a perfect 1:1 pixel ratio, like on a standard computer monitor, which will prevent text front getting blurred.

AUDIO: The speakers are decent. You really can't expect great speakers out of small TVs, especially flat panel ones. However, they are good enough for everyday use. However, if you can, take advantage of audio out. You can plug it into a stereo or some computer speakers and get some great sound. The audio out volume is also controlled by the TV. The TV also features a digital optical audio out along with analog stereo out. NOTE: This TV does NOT have a headphone jack out! However, you CAN use the analog stereo out as a headphone jack with an adapter.

Overall I am completely satisfied with this product. I will probably recommend this to a friend since his old TV just died on him!
