Featuring a sleek, space-saving design, Toshiba's 26HF84A HDTV-ready CRT television uses bottom-mounted stereo speakers and a stylish FST PURE flat picture tube, which also happens to minimize image-degrading ambient light reflections. The 26-inch set is as loaded with image technologies as it is with connections and conveniences, simplifying your home-theater experience while enriching it.
DFine high-speed velocity-scan modulation improves definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. A wideband video amplifier minimizes noise and distortion.
A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter processes RF and composite-video signals for a sharp, clean picture. This advanced filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricate scenes.
A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing in a brighter, clearer picture.
And, since not everything you watch will be high-definition (720p/1080i) in origin--wouldn't that be nice--CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all video signals (including 480i/p) to 1080i HD. This significantly reduces jagged-line artifacts for a smoother, more natural image. (Selectable 540p, for those who want a progressive-scan image from a progressive-scan source, is available through the onscreen menu.)
The 26HF84A is loaded with connections of all stripes, including an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) HDTV input, which gives you a pure, uncompressed video connection with your DTV receiver or set-top box (not included). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.
For audio, the 26HF84A offers SRS WOW, combining SRS 3D (which creates a wide 3-dimensional sound field), TruBass (which boosts bass frequency perception for dramatic low-frequency effects), and Focus (which raises the perceived sound image vertically to clarify voices) to greatly enhance your home-theater sound.
The set gives you stereo audio (with 5 watts per channel) from broadcast programming via Multi-channel Television Sound (MTS), which permits broadcasters to encode stereo audio within the video portion of TV programming signals.
The supplied 4-device illuminated universal remote control is capable of operating the TV and many DVD players.

A couple of improvements to an already great TV.,

This review is from: Toshiba 26HF84A 26" Widescreen HD-Ready TV with FST Pure Flat Screen (Electronics)
This TV is an incremental upgrade to the 26HF84 and the main improvements are that it has more video inputs, "3:2 pulldown", and "black-level expansion." If it had been up to me I'd have improved the remote, either by making it programmable or by adding support for more non-Toshiba devices, in particular the HDTV receiver that Comcast supplies. Without this ability I end up juggling remotes: one for changing channels and another for changing video inputs between TV, DVD, and video camera.A couple of other things to note about this TV: First, it uses a picture tube rather than an LCD or plasma display. So while the screen is flat, it's not thin. You can't tell by looking at the pictures, but this TV is 19" thick. Second, although it's pretty thick, at 27.5" wide it's unusually narrow for a 26" HDTV. The narrowness comes from having the speakers below the picture, rather than on each side. This is very handy if you want to put the TV in a cabinet that's short on width. The Syntax Olevia TVs are handy this way as well because the side speakers are removeable. The bottom line in terms of picture quality is that the picture is gorgeous. When displaying HDTV programs the quality is everthing you could hope for. Before you get too excited though you should check with your local cable company, or your satellite provider, to see how many programs are actually available in HD format. This has nothing to do with the TV itself, but I've found that less than 5% of the programs I actually want to watch are available in HD. When the TV reverts to displaying standard TV broadcasts it's no longer stunning and becomes just a nice TV. HD availability will undoubtedly improve over time but you might want to check what's available to you right now.

Awesome small widescreen HDTV,

I looked hard and long for a HD(ready)TV with widescreen specs at around the 26" mark. This is the ONE. I have it connected to a PC with an ATI Radeon 7000 DVI digital output as the source driving it. (I bought a cheap DVI to HDMI cable for ~$10 on eBay. BestBuy has cables for going over ~$100) By having a chunky PC as the video source (whether it be for DVD or DivX/Xvid), one can do a lot of postprocessing to clean up the video as well get progressive scanning. Love it.

I had my TV fail just under a year after I bought it (luckily I think I'm under warranty). Went to turn it on and snap, crackle pop it's not working at all except for a high pitched buzzing sound. Beware.
