Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Smaller than previous models and boasting an ever-sharper image, Toshiba's 26HL84 LCD television is stocked to the gills with life-simplifying features and sophisticated image enhancements. With minimal glare, no screen curvature, and no irritating high-frequency screen noise, the 26-inch set stands fully apart from its CRT counterparts. Set it on a table using the supplied stand or mount it on the wall using optional brackets for ultimate space efficiency.

The 1,366 x 768-resolution set boasts not only two ColorStream HD high-definition (up to 720p) component-video inputs, but also a Digital Visual Interface (DVI-HDTV) for a direct digital connection with an HD set-top box or HD satellite receiver (sold separately).

LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch "flyback" noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life (with no risk of image burn-in), space savings, and light weight/easy positioning.

Toshiba's PixelPure proprietary digital video processing is a suite of eight different circuits that together create a consistently clear, deep, and accurate picture: 6.2 million pixel oversampling (for higher perceived resolution with decreased image distortion), Real Speed Progressive Scanning (which uses additional sampling points to create smoother diagonal lines), Magic Square Algorithm (for smooth and natural color gradation), Dynamic Contrast Enhancer (for higher perceived contrast and increased color saturation and purity), Super Real Transient and Small Signal Sharpness (for sharp transitions from dark to bright), Color Transient Improver (for sharp transitions on color changes without bleeding), and Color Detail Enhancer (to maintain fine image detail in color saturated areas).

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

Other features include HD Window POP (picture-on-picture) with split-screen and 12-multiwindow viewing as well as PIP sound (which lets you watch and listen to two programs simultaneously, even HD sources); TheaterLink IR (through which you can operate your video components by pointing the remote at the TV screen, even if the components are hidden away); CableClear DNR+ digital noise reduction; individual audio/video settings by input type; sleep and wake timers; SurfLock; and a host of parental controls including GameTimer, channel lock, and video input lock.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear audio output--choose from fixed- or variable-level feeds--lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

And the 10-watts-per-channel 26HL84 offers a little something--well, a lot of something--extra in the bass department: Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS), which heightens the impact of low-frequency audio. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). If that's not enough aural excitement, you can also enjoy two-channel simulated surround courtesy of Dolby Virtual Surround.

The 26HL84, which measures 27.19 by 20.19 by 5.06 inches (W x H x D) without the stand, is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

What's in the Box
LCD TV, desk stand, remote control, warranty card, user's manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba has a Winner !, September 1, 2004
This review is from: Toshiba 26HL84 26-Inch HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV (Electronics)
I prior purchased a Sharp 22" LCD TV and had it for about 6 weeks. It performed well but I wanted a bigger screen size.

I intended to buy the Sharp LC-26GA4U, but after observing the different LCD displays in the show room, (Sharp, Sony, Philips, Samsung and Toshiba), I could easily see the Sony and the Toshiba had a much better HD picture than the other brands. So I came home with the Toshiba CE 26" w HD LCD (26HL84) which is the new model Toshiba has to offer.

This LCD TV offers an outstanding, exceptionally crystal clear and sharp HD picture and when I hooked it up to my local Analog Cable system I was very pleased to observe that it continued to receive just about as clear a picture with Cable as it did with HD. I find that the TV Remote is easy to operate and the Aspect button on the remote is very handy.

One thing I noticed that was so much better with this wonderful Toshiba LCD over the 22" Sharp LCD is the way the Toshiba processes the more realistic looking Aspect modes. The Sharp is very nice but the Aspect modes are a little distorted and not natural looking as they are on the LCD Toshiba.

The way the Toshiba processes colors and especially RED and BLACK is incredible as well as natural looking skin tones. I noticed while looking at several different displayed manufactures that you do in fact notice considerable difference in how colors are displayed and especially how sharp the picture is being processed. That's why I chose the Toshiba over all others offered.

DVD's are displayed on this TV with eye-popping clarity. Also this Toshiba has a really great surround sound system.

Toshiba has a real winner with this outstanding LCD TV. I have owned this TV one week and I am very pleased with my purchase. I could not be happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pic for the Price, March 10, 2005

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toshiba 26HL84 26-Inch HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV (Electronics)
I needed a mid-size TV to hang on the wall in my bedroom. Didn't want to spend close to $2K like some 20-something inch LCD TV's are. I checked out the Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic (others too?) at an electronics store. Sony was out of the price range, Sharp was in, but didn't have quite the pic quality that the Toshiba had in my opinion - but a close second. Didn't care for the Panasonic.

Now that it is home I like it a lot. It is very bright and colorful - even w/ the brightness, backlighting, or color settings on normal/default. DVD's look sharp thru component cables. Digital cable looks great too. Analog Cable is better than on my old CRT, but still a wee noisy. Still, analog cable looks pretty good.

Sound is very adequate for every day TV watching. Remote is suprisingly nice to use. I have it control my high end Denon AVR and DVD, cheap Sony CD and VCR players, and my cable box.

Jackpack is very nice w/ plenty of options, but don't expect to use all the inputs - you'll never route all those cables through the space Toshiba leaves you.

I have only two dissapointments with the TV:
1) The grey bars on 4:3 images are too light even on the darkest setting. I would prefer them to be black instead of grey.
2) Wish the remote was a learning remote and not just programmable. Biggest dissapointment is not having the menu/info buttons available for my digital cable box.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice widescreen for a compact space, September 3, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toshiba 26HL84 26-Inch HD-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV (Electronics)
The design of speakers underneath the screen fulfilled my need for a widescreen LCD that would fit in the same cabinet that an old Sony XBR2 without speakers had occupied. I am satisfied with the picture quality and the ease of shifting between picture modes. The widescreen and the resolution prompted me to start watching my old laserdiscs again.
