A stylish, feature-rich 27-inch set doesn't have to cost a fortune. Toshiba's 27A44 offers a high-contrast, FST Black picture tube, stereo sound with a double-baffle speaker system, and a host of inputs--from standard RF (for antenna, VCR, or cable box) all the way to high-resolution component-video (for DVD players, satellite receivers, and digital video recorders). Front-panel connections make it easy to hook up a camcorder or gaming console, while the built-in GameTimer feature offers a convenient way to limit set use.

The 27A44 offers picture-enhancing technology, too--its 3-line digital comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). The 27A44 also features simulated surround sound, V-Chip parental controls, a sleep timer, and a 4-device glow-in-the-dark universal remote control.

This Toshiba 27" Stereo TV - 27A44 features a black picture tube that eliminates unwanted reflections from ambient light better than conventional tubes. Color reproduction is enhanced thanks to the 27A44's nickel-alloy construction Invar Shadow Mask. Features: 3-line digital comb filter with vertical contour correction; MTS stereo with dbx; double baffle speaker system; StableSound; tri-lingual OSD (English, French, Spanish); ColorStream component video input; front panel A/V input for easy connection of video games or a camcorder; sleep timer; channel lock; and video lock.

My 15-year-old set finally blew a gasket and I needed a new set using post-holiday funds (limited!). On-line research pointed to Toshiba, so I set off on my search with this in mind. I went to Best Buy and asked the department clerk that if he wanted a new set in the 27"+ size with a budget capping at $300, what would he chose? This set was his answer. The manufacturer thoughtfully added reinforced hand-slots in the box, offset to balance the weight of the set, so my friend and I had a reasonably easy time hauling this home. Set up was quick and easy. The initial video settings made the picture very, very vibrant, but it was easy to tone down. Skin tones are the best I've ever seen. The universal remote is sensibly laid out, and I had no problem programming it to control my DVD player, but need to contact the manufacturer, as neither code worked on my cable box, and there is no back up plan in the manual. The sound is exceptional as this model has 5 watts/channel, where competitors are mostly in the 1.5 area. I am extremely pleased with this purchase.

I purchased this television by accident; I had wanted a flat-screen, but the price was so great on this TV at the time, I failed to notice it wasn't a flat-screen until I got home. My error turned out to be a good thing, though. I absolutely love this television. I am able to hook up my DVD player, PS2, and Gamecube all at once. The picture-quality and the sound-quality are amazing. No complaints with the remote, either. Overall a wonderful television I plan to keep for a very long time.

I PAID $250 (CLOSE OUT) AT BEST BUY, AND THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST CRT (NORMAL PICTURE TUBE TVs) I'VE OWNED. THE COLORS ARE VIBRANT WITHOUT THE SKIN TONES GOING "DAY-GLO". ONE OF MY FAV FEATURES IS NUMERICAL VALUES FOR EACH ADJUSTMENT(COLOR,BRIGHTNESS,ETC) , MAKING IT EASY TO FIND AN OVERALL SETTING, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE MULTIPLE CHANNELS: SATELLITE, CABLE,TV. (THE NEXT PRESIDENTAL ADDRESS FLIP AROUND AND NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE IN CHANNEL PICTURES)IF A CHANNEL OR MOVIE NEEDS ADJUSTING YOU CAN DO SO THEN PUT IT BACK LATER, NO PROBLEM! WITH A TV LIKE THIS YOU MAY WANT TO HOLD OUT ON SPENDING A LOAD ON ONE OF THE NEWER TYPES FOR A WHILE.
