5.0 out of 5 stars Great TV for a great price, June 30, 2003

This review is from: Toshiba 27AF43 27" TV with FST PURE Flat Screen (Electronics)
I got some online rebates for this television and it came out to be suprisingly cheap. The picture is among the best i have seen on non-HD televisions. I have my DVD player hooked up to it using an S-Video cable and the picture is just amazing. It also has some of the best speakers i have ever heard on a television. You can actually hear the bass! The flat screen also greatly reduces glare which makes this ideal for a living room setting where every seat has a different angle of the television. There are video inputs on the front (very nice feature) and a few more in the back which makes hooking multiple accessories up to it no problem. The television itself is, in my eyes, just about perfect. It is easily one of, if not the best 27" flat screens on the market. The only drawback I can think of is the remote, which is a minor flaw to say the least. It is workable, though some of the buttons are not as intuitive as they could be. All in all, a great television for a great price, I have no regrets!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best in its range...for me, March 3, 2004

I (like everyone) did a little study on flat 27" televisions and found this to be the most desirable for several reasons: 1) consumer reports 2) appearence 3) value. I bought this set from bestbuy and returned it because of a flaw (bouncing/blooming with the news ticker), and decided on the Samsung 27" flat...bad idea, that tv had terrible geometry, and while the picture was sharp, it was not vibrant. Sound was terrible, and I'm not talking for cinematic reasons, but it was very 'tinny' and hollow. Returned it the next day (they were all that way). A salesman told me Sony (fs100) comes back as much as any (and circuitcity.com has customer reveiws..complaints of cheap frames etc) The Panasonic reminded me of and ugly boombox. The Sharp is not sharp. So...I bit my lip and took the toshiba.
1-Toshiba
(PRO)-sharp compenent picture, analog/digital cable got very clear once cables and connections updated. Great appearance with smokey color that blends with any room. Great sound even without surround (checked both).
(CON)- without the cleanest cable connection, the picture clarity fails and tends to bloom (pays to update old cables in the house). This model seems to struggle a little with speaker shielding (noticable on white screens, but not a huge issue)...for the price those are the only problems I've found after 6 months. I still feel I made the right purchase

***One interesting way to get and HD look (rather prog scan look) is the 16:9 compression. By itself will 'squish' the picture...BUT, if you have a DVD player that'll expand the picture/signal, the TV will still display the same resolution on the screen (just morphed taller)...at this point you can use the 16:9 and compress the image back to a natural state. This produces the sharpest image without being an HDTV. BTW this only works with widescreen formats (1.85:1 and 2.35:1) and standard 4:3 movies. You can probably try this with any DVD player that will expand (I have a pioneer that will and a Koss that won't) and a tv with 16:9 compression (virtually all flats have)
** Also, rather that purchasing that extended warranty (you get a year manufact), check the manufacturer website to find an authorized dealer in your area that handles factory warranty repairs. If a tv lasts a year (I've had a few), it'll last well beyond the extended warranty. All this is good if you get a 27" (average 80-90 lb), but maybe not with a 150lb 32" or higher

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning - 27AF53 - Cinema Series, January 5, 2004
This review is from: Toshiba 27AF43 27" TV with FST PURE Flat Screen (Electronics)
Intuitive menu navigation and setup, beautiful, vibrant display, great sound options and numerous input options. I have a DVD player hooked up to the tv via composit video, a VCR via standard video and (for now) a set-top antenna via coaxial cable (with excellent results) which still leaves an S-video and front video hookup port (for gaming station) still available. All input can be routed through the TV's output audio to my theater stereo system with crisp and clear results. Best TV purchase EVER.

Did a bunch of research and decided to buy this tv. It is now 2 weeks later and it is going back to the store. The colors are great, but the picture is terrible. It is incredibly grainy, the pixels are HUGE and everything is very blocky. Watching any sports (main reason i bought the tv) is absolutely dreadful because the picture is so distorted, the players are just a big blur. I emailed toshiba support and they said that the pixelation was normal, not good. I went through every possible setting to find some clarity by custom tuning to no avail. You can not turn off the internal speaker, another downfall. I'm gonna get a samsung 27" tv instead as the picture on it is incredibly clear and not blocky. Heads up with this tv if you are planning on buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent TV, March 26, 2004

I bought this Toshiba TV for a family member and I have to say that it's excellent. Beautiful colors, super sharp image, good remote, tons of connections. Actually, the only thing I could critique is that it should have had one or more s-video connections. I have a super vhs video and DVD player and if I ever got digital cable, this TV wouldn't suffice when it comes to the number of s-video inputs. But I didn't buy it for me so the many inputs/outputs were sufficient for the person I bought it for.

The sound is also good. Maybe not great but it does have BBE and Surrond Sound.

And the remote is really good too. I love the video input button (video 1, video 2, Colorstream, etc). You can watch a DVD and a video cassette and cable TV at the same time (if you want to do that). Also, because the DVD, VCR and TV are all Toshiba, the remote can control all three Toshiba products. Now that's cool.

So, overall, this Toshiba flat screen TV is great. Except for the number of s-video connection, there's almost nothing wrong with it. And the price here in Canada is perfect ($450, which is the same price in the US). Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Television, April 23, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba 27AF43 27" TV with FST PURE Flat Screen (Electronics)
I myself have been a fan of Sony, but when buying my next t.v I wanted to step up the research. I looked at a few web reviews like the ones here and could bot find a definitive answer- there was one place to go- Concumer Reports. Consumer reports rated this the best 27 inch television- this was what I needed to see- if I have learned one thing, it is to trust these guys! I was finnaly ready to buy, so I drove up to Best Buy to find an open box model of this tv- it was 75 $ off with no noticeble flaws. Once I got it home I knew I made the righ choice- it has a clean and vibrant picture with crisp sound, and yes you can here the base! Everything you would need in a tv for not too much money! If your in the market for a new tv, look no further!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great!, January 26, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba 27AF43 27" TV with FST PURE Flat Screen (Electronics)
After a lot of research on TV's I settled for this one. It is a huge improvement over my old RCA in many ways, but it seems to have a problem when showing sharp transitions between black and white. This is most noticable on text or animation. It looks as if the lines are blurred and I can't seem to find a fix for the problem. I went and looked at TV's at the local Best Buy and I noticed that most of the TV's including many HDTV's had the same problem. I'm starting to wonder if this is just a COX Dgital Cable thing.

On the positive side the Colors are extremely vibrant, Blacks are black and DVD's look stunning through the component input. I also find the reflections of the picture on the silver TV frame a bit annoying while watching in low light situations. Unfortunately black TV's seem to be a thing of the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great TV!, January 24, 2004

Got this as a gift for my mother. I compared a few brands but for the money this one just can't be beat! The reviewer below who described "HUGE" pixels and a "distorted" picture needs to return his coke bottom glasses for a new pair. This is typical for most sets in this price range, it's not an HD display. Clearly he must have a problem with Toshiba or he just isn't informed.

Anyway, it's a great product. I got it for my mother for crying out loud! :)
