The set boasts not merely 2 high-definition-ready ColorStream HD component-video inputs, but a pair of HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) jacks for direct-digital connections with a DTV set-top box and one other high-def source (such as a satellite receiver). What's more, its FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it also minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity.
Improving standard interlaced signals (like composite-video outputs from a DVD player, cable box, or VCR), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to high-definition 1080i resolution or user-selectable 540p (progressive). A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals.
A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing in a brighter, clearer picture.
DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown reversal) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.
As standard video amplifiers increase the gain of the video signal, video bandwidth tends to decrease. This eliminates the higher frequencies, reducing resolution. The 30HF85's wideband video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution and greater sharpness and detail.
Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can directly select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them.
Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.
The set's stereo speakers are powered by 5 watts per channel, and SRS WOW processing combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass low-frequency enhancement, and Focus (which clarifies voices). The set also includes auto channel setup, channel labeling, input labeling, channel lock, favorite channel, last-channel recall, and auto mute when you stumble upon a channel with no signal.
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your television. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

This is a great solution for my DVDs,

I really like this TV. I almost gave it 5 stars. This is a great solution for getting the most out of DVD and HD input without the expense of going to LCD.The TV has a great picture, good sound (I'm not a sound freak, so take that with a grain of salt) and lots of features. We had to play with the settings for awhile until we got the crisp picture we wanted because there are two controls which will cause some distortion on the HD input (Film/Audio and a "smoothing" setting - set it to Film and smoothing Off). I was surprised that the default factory settings were not the most appropriate for HD input. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because in the "natural" picture size (TV's 4:3 ratio) the picture is centered and a gray panel is visible on each side. The gray is what bothers me. I'm sure I'll get used to it over time, but I find it distracting. We had tried another TV that used black to mat the image. We actually forgot it was matted within a few minutes of watching. I have yet to get used to the gray matting. I should note that I didn't purchase this set through Amazon. I might have considered it except I had just gone through problems with another set (and another company) where we had to return it - repeatedly - so I wasn't willing to risk not being able to return this set.

This TV is a great value and a great HD solution. One minor gripe is that it doesn't have a TV/Video button on the TV itself, and since I use another remote for everything, I have to hunt down the TV remote to change to a different video input. As far as the gray paneling goes around the screen, I had that problem for about the first day until I set my HDTV settop appropriately. We use the Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD/DVR box through Time Warner. They don't tell you this, but if you just hook the TV up to it without running a setup wizard (activated by holding two buttons on the box itself while the power's off) it won't maximize the TV's ability to process different signals and make the images fit the screen appropriately. What ends up happening is the TV converts everything to 1080i and images coming in at 480i (which are most non-HD signals, therefore most of what you'll be watching) end up in the gray-paneled box. After running the wizard, the HD box and the TV work together to produce the highest-quality image on the screen without the panelling. So make sure you run the set up wizard through whatever HD tuner you use. (By the way, the Time Warner box also has an option to make the panels on the sides dark instead of gray). I can't say much about the sound on this TV since I'm running it through a receiver. I can say the HD picture is stunning and the TV is the perfect size for our viewing distance (about 8 feet). Normal TV looks great, too, although images broadcasted in 4:3 are inevitably a bit stretched when they appear on the 16:9 screen. This takes a little getting used to but it's going to be unavoidable on any theater-wide screen that receives non-HD signals. The alternative is the paneling on either side of the screen, which I loathe. But like I said earlier, if you set up the settop appropriately, the distortion will be at a minimum and the screen will be full. Bottom line: Good TV, snag it, but set it up right to enjoy it!!

Great price on a great HDTV,

This review is from: Toshiba 30HF85 30" TheaterWide HD-Ready Flat-Screen Direct View TV (Electronics)
We decided on HDTV. Problem: I was replacing a 27" Sony Trinitron. I wanted at least as much screen on "standard TV" as I already had but my cabinet limited me to a maximum width of 32". Further, it's the only place in my den a TV fits. We checked around. The CRT-type HDTVs appeared more like a movie screen to my eyes. Not glaringly bright and not overly contrasty. The 30HF85 met our needs best. Going from store to store the picture on these sets varied from horrible to impressive depending on how good the store's video distribution system was. Salesmen pointed this out to us.No problems with "lines" on the screen or "pock marks" on the surface of the screen as other reviewers here complained. Kept on the 1080i HD setting we never see the "gray matting" another person complained of. Toshiba made some improvements? There are many settings. The image can be adjusted quite a bit. Our set connects to a digital cable box via a "Monster HDMI cable." Take our advice and DO NOT skimp on the cable or you will regret it. One can find it at a 40% discount from internet auction sites. Let us caution against buying the Toshiba this way, though. Some internet marketers retail new HDTVs which are "B grade units." Sold cheaply because their HDTVs are "not quite perfect." And we would not care to wrangle this monster back inside the carton and re-ship it across the country were we to get a lemon. Too much trouble, too much time w/o a tv. My son is in college and he sells HDTVs part time at an electronics store. They do not carry Toshiba HDTVs at 'short-circuit city.' He comes home from work and becomes mesmerizied by the PERFECT image on this set. (-He did protest when he learned we were buying a Toshiba...!) The sound from the built in speakers is unimpressive. But we use our home theatre sound system so it is not an issue. MANY retailers carry this unit. For instance, Sears does price matching + a 10% bonus. AND they have the most reasonable service contracts around... Retailers "rack up" on cables and service contracts... 45 days later we remain pleased with this television. Our search is over until technology shifts again.
