From the Manufacturer

From the Manufacturer Manufacturer's Review (March 12, 2009)
Strikingly gorgeous in high-gloss piano black, the 32-inch Toshiba 32AV502R 720p HDTV combines quality, style, and value. It features Toshiba's DynaLight dynamic backlight control for deeper black levels, a fast 8ms response time CineSpeed LCD panel, and two HDMI digital inputs for simple high quality connection to cable/satellite boxes, DVD players and more. It includes a PC Input for use as a PC monitor or gaming TV, and--unlike other smaller TVs--it also features a Gaming Mode to shorten the signal to screen time for faster game controller response. And this HDTV, like all Toshiba 2009 TV models, meets Energy Star 3.0 certifications for reducing energy consumption by up to 25 percent compared with standard TVs.

The elegant Toshiba 32AV502R 720p HDTV (see larger image).
In addition to this 32-inch model, the Toshiba AV502 series also includes the 26-inch 26AV502R and 37-inch 37AV502R. For a step up to 1080p resolution, check out the RV525 series 40-inch 40RV525R. (Learn more about what size TV should you get.)

Key Features

  • 720p resolution (1366 x 768)
  • 60Hz video scan rate
  • 10-bit video processor offers more colors
  • CineSpeed LCD panel has an 8ms response speed necessary for cleaner high-action home theater images. A wide viewing angle ensures that you'll have the best seat in the house.
  • DynaLight Backlight Control utilizes advanced image processing to monitor the brightness of each video frame, and adjust the backlight intensity accordingly. This precision creates seamless transitions with deep blacks for increased detail and depth analysis.
  • Native Mode restores the size of the picture by the 3-5 percent that is generally lost during the normal over-scanning that occurs on traditional sets.
  • Built-in ATSC/NTSC/QAM digital tuning allows for tuning of standard cable channels as well as off-air digital broadcasts, in addition to digital "cable-in-the-clear" broadcasts.
  • Cinema Mode 24 fps (3:2 Pulldown): This HDTV performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too-- a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture.
  • Color Temperature Control: Most Toshiba televisions provide three user-selectable Color Temperature settings affect the sets overall white balance. The "Warm" setting reduces the color temperature to an NTSC standard 6500 degrees Kelvin and delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room. "Medium" and "Cool" provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased.
  • TheaterWide: Sets with TheaterWide modes are ideal for displaying HDTV signals as well as enhanced for widescreen television DVDs.
    • TheaterWide 1:Letterboxed image is digitally expanded 33 percent horizontally and vertically. Useful for reproducing Academy Standard (1.85:1) formatted software.
    • TheaterWide 2:Letterboxed image is expanded 33 percent horizontally and 42 percent vertically. Particularly of use when viewing narrow letterboxed images originally filmed in Panavision or CinemaScope.
    • TheaterWide 3:Letterboxed image is expanded 33 percent horizontally and 24 percent vertically. Can be utilized when displaying letterboxed images that incorporate narrow bands at the top and bottom of the picture.
  • Gaming Mode enhances the gaming experience by reducing the amount of time it takes for the signal to travel from the game controller to the TV.
  • Channel Browser allows you to easily scan through the last 32 channels you have viewed, with screen images for the last five channels displayed, by channel, by favorites, and by input, at the touch of a button.
  • Channel Labeling allows you to put station call letters on the screen along with the station numbers, so you always know what channel you're watching.
  • Energy Star 3.0 compliant
  • Warranty: 12 months for parts and labor

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

4.0 out of 5 stars Best 720P SET......, September 19, 2009
This review is from: Toshiba 32AV502R 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
So I was in the market for a 32 inch tv and found this Toshiba to be a great value. I 32 inches, having 1080P isn't necessary and worth the extra cash. I also reviewed the 37 RV525R, which is virtually the same set but with 1080P. It's got good blacks, better than everage. Excellent whites, as most LCD'S have. Handles motion very well despite not having 120 refresh rate. Does a good job with 3:2 pulldown, although you have to turn that feature on, which is the cinema mode turned to film. Viewing angle isn't too great, but then again no lcd is. Once you get 14 degrees off-axis you lose 50% of the picture's contrast. Reflections aren't too bad with this Toshiba, so it's ideal for brightly lit room. Color accuracy isn't too bad but there is a green push which the picture menu allows you to correct. The audio is also very good for a little flat panel, except you get a little vibration with certain dialog with the bass turned all the way up. The remote is excellent and is very user friendly. The menu system is very simple and easy to navigate. Overall, this is a great value. Sure, you will get a better tv with either the Samsung or the Sony, but you will pay more for the extra features they come with. Are they worth it to you? It does, however, outperform the LG,Sharp, and the Panny in most areas. At the price you can grab this for it's hard to turn down. Here are calibrated settings for this tv.
. Note: I will keep updating these settings until I feel they are perfect, so keep checking in from time to time.

I gave it a four star only because of the speaker vibration during certain dialog and the major color adjustment it needed, but for the money, I could have easily given it a five star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great TV for the price, November 19, 2009

This review is from: Toshiba 32AV502R 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
Got this in today. UPS delivered with a hole in the box and broken styrofoam blocks. TV was fine, though.
No dead pixels and everything is functional. Picture is very good with strong clarity and fine tuning controls that help a lot. Black levels are better than my Philips 1080P set!

Setup is a bit lengthy and the manual is not as detailed considering how big it is. Play with the controls for awhile and you'll get the gist of the tuning controls for picture.

Works with cable or Antenna OTA signals just fine. Strong signal too with a signal meter that is very helpful.
If using OTA HD antenna, set the TV to an "antenna" input and then do a channel search. Once it worked, the OTA signals look better than the HD Uverse.

The sound is VERY clear with a decent bass to it. Compared to a Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic that I listened to at a store this was MUCH better sounding.

Channels change quickly with the remote. Remote is universal with up to two other input controls. Size of text on the screen is good without being too big. Info buttons show the display of the show info very quickly.

Will put on a good power surge protector after reading a post about power supply issues. Most of that tends to be because of power flucuations from the socket or cheap surge protectors. However, sometimes things just die as I've seen on both regular and HDTV's.

Excellent set overall. I compared this to my 42" 1080P set and the difference was minor. Awesome for the bedroom, den, or even a main HDTV.

Will update if I have any problems. Paid with Amex so that I double the warranty for free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Standard definition signals look better than the standard def on other 720p TVs, December 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toshiba 32AV502R 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I bought the Toshiba 32AV502R for my elderly grandpa. I wanted to get something for him that was easy to use and took up very little space. This TV is working out perfectly for him. He watches TV solely in standard definition. The picture on this Toshiba is better than either of my Panasonics in SD. The colors appear vibrant even in standard definition. The picture in standard definition isn't perfect of course and will likely not impress people used to HD TV. For my grandpa though, this isn't an issue. He likes the picture and is able to use the remote easily.

We also tested the TV in HD and found the image to be quite pretty. The blacks were dark and the colors were vibrant.

The TV fits nicely on my grandpa's smallish credenza and doesn't overwhelm his small bedroom. The case is shiny and the speakers are unobtrusive.

Overall, my grandpa has had a great experience with this TV and so far it has been the perfect TV for his small space.
