Want to splurge on a big screen LED TV--without overspending? Toshiba's SL412U LED HDTV series is a great choice. These sets can light up a living room or any large floor plan with dazzling 1080p full HD* imagery and outstanding sound. And these TVs definitely help you expand, too, providing a USB port for plugging in a camera or MP3 player, plus three HDMI ports to help you build-out a home theater. Plus, they're draped in famous Toshiba quality and reliability, featuring an ultrathin design that fits most any decor.

Key Features:

1080p Resolution

Delivering more than just high-definition, the 1080p full HD* output on this TV represents the finest HD picture quality available today. Skin tones, textures and landscapes suddenly seem like real life. Shadows are deeper and richer. Colors pop. Highlights come alive with amazing character. The secret is more pixels. In fact, on a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen, 1080p full HD* content displays over 2,000,000 pixels--a standard 720p HD display less than half that.

LED Technology

Driven by LED backlight technology, this TV displays images using liquid crystal illumination like traditional LCD models. But unlike LCD TVs, the LED backlight is made of several light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The result is a picture offering deeper blacks, brighter whites and vivid colors.

60Hz Refresh Rate

A measure of how often images on your Toshiba HDTV screen are "redrawn" each second, a 60Hz refresh rate ensures you'll enjoy great picture quality for the money.

DynaLight

Adding intensity to blacks and selectively reducing the intensity of highlight areas, DynaLight gives the TV picture a more balanced, true-to-life appearance. It utilizes advanced histogram technology to monitor the brightness of each video frame and automatically adjust backlight intensity based on what's being shown. This allows for numerous levels of control, and can create dynamic contrast many times what you'd normally get. The result is a powerful picture with deep blacks for increased detail and incredible depth.

CineSpeed LED Panel

This special LED screen delivers superior high-speed video. Plus, its wide viewing angle ensures you'll experience better viewing from a variety of seating areas.

Native Mode

Many TV broadcasts, movies and other content are produced in standard def 480i and 480p or high-def 720p. Depending on the show or your preferences, there are times when you may not want your Toshiba 1080p or 720p TV to automatically upconvert those signals. Native Mode lets you easily take control. On our 1080p HDTVs, Native Mode eliminates unnecessary scaling of full HD signals that can reduce overall image resolution--and quality. Activated on either our 720p or 1080p TVs, it also displays the image edges many sets lose to normal over-scanning.

Gaming Mode

Lets you enjoy hair-trigger action on your Toshiba TV with a special setting that reduces game controller delay.

HDMI with CEC*

Technology that enables you to easily connect to high-definition video and immersive surround sound in one cable, and control like-equipped home theater components with one remote control.

USB with Music and Photo

Easily connect to your favorite music and photos via USB.

High-Res PC Input

Enables you to enjoy high-definition images when you connect a PC to your Toshiba TV

VESA Mounting Pattern

A pattern of video industry standardized holes used for mounting to stands or wall, which allows for use of universal mounts when mounting your TV.

We've been extremely happy with this Toshiba TV.
IMHO
I was a little nervous about the sound, but it sounds decent to me, although I'm no audiophile.

Pros: Bright and crisp pictures, slim panel and light weight, easy to set up.

Bought this TV for a good price and am very impressed with the picture quality. The specs are not that great; however, the picture is better than TVs costing more with better specs. About the sound, it is about as good as anything else that is 1.4 inches thick. I have not found a slim TV that has great sound. This a TV that is very pleasing to watch. The matte screen finish, 1080p, stunning colors, and good dark scene production (for a LED) make this TV and joy to use.

The picture is beautiful for TV or computer VGA or digital connection. It also has an adequate, but plain vanilla media player that can give you a slide show of photos or play MP3 files from a USB plug in. However the slide show does not include any transitions such as fade, nor any pan and scan effect. When you use the remote to pause or back up the slide show, the picture shrinks to show an interface panel at the bottom, and only returns to full screen after a 5-sec delay, so that's another annoyance. The media player can't play any digital video files. It can't zoom in or blow up a photo. Like I said, it's plain vanilla.

Other reviewers said the speakers suck, but I didn't realize that it has no headphone jack, which is a major inconvenience for me, since I like to use wireless headphones a lot. It also has only one RCA audio out pair, and they are not volume controlled, another major pain. That means you can't use an inexpensive, simple audio amp and speakers because you have no remote control of the volume or muting. Instead you have to use an amp or home theater audio system that includes its own remote control, and you have to use that instead of the TV's remote to control the volume and muting. Really, how much cost did Toshiba save by not including a headphone jack? And why couldn't they at least optionally make the audio out jacks volume controlled by the remote?

My inexpensive (under $60) 2-year old Memorex DVD progressive scan player with HDMI out and upscaling to 1080p makes standard DVD's look great on the Toshiba HDTV screen. But apparently it's not possible to control this DVD player through the HDMI connection using the TV remote. So now I'm up to a minimum of three remotes to watch a DVD and have decent sound.

At this price range, this is an excellent 40inch LED 1080p HDTV. Picture is better than most TVs that cost 200 more than this. The sound isn't as bad as some of the reviewers claim. I don't have any problem with the sound and found that it can fill up my whole living room. People need to be realistic; you're NEVER going to get HUGE, house shaking sound from a flat screen TV speaker. If you want sound like that, you gotta buy separate speakers / home theater system. GET Real people. TV looks great, nice shinny finish, stand very stable, and nice and thin. Great TV!!

We had an old entertainment center that we wanted this to fit in. It was one of the few that was 40" and would still fit into the space. We have about .25 inches to spare on each end.

It arrived quickly and we have been enjoying it very much ever since.

One of the other reviews mentioned having issues with the screws for the stand. I understand the problem. Four of the base screws go in very tightly and are a bit soft and therefore it could be easy to strip the head out. If you use a #2 Phillips screwdriver, you should have no problems. If you use a smaller screw driver, you will likely not get them in without problems.

The only other issue with the TV is the infrared remote. It seems to have a somewhat week signal. You have to have it pointed directly at the bottom right of the screen for it to react. We have an overstuffed chair that catches that corner from some parts of the room and sometimes you have to move to get the TV to react. Not a big deal but I thought I would mention it.

We are using it to get over the air signals and not satellite or cable. It seems to need a stronger signal than the HD adapter that ran to our old tube TV. Because of this, I had to get a better antenna and do some trial and error to get the most stations. In the end, we are getting better signal now and more channels. Added about $60 to the cost and got to spend some quality time in the attic with my son.

The complaints about the speakers not being strong enough are not an issue. We have it tied back into the rest of our sound system and don't rely on the built in speakers.

The color is great and we were able to tie it into some legacy sound equipment quite easily. Enough jacks for me.

My entire family loves it and thinks it is a huge improvement from what we had.

Biggest problem is that I am not getting as much other stuff done. I am spending too much time watching TV.

We've been extremely happy with this Toshiba TV. The picture quality is outstanding. It's bright and clear from almost any direction. The blacks are very black and the picture is bright, even in a pretty bright living room. The instructions were great, too, and it was simple to attach the included base.

We really appreciate the simple and sleek styling, too. It's very thin and the border of the TV is very narrow. It gives a much more modern look versus our old tube set. Can't comment on the sound quality as we run the audio through a receiver.

We're glad we added Toshiba to the brands we were considering. Hopefully the TV lasts a long time, because it satisfies everything we were looking for.
