The 50HP82 50-inch plasma television is primed for movie and sports fans, as well as for use as a centerpiece for home theater and home computing. The set offers a widescreen, portrait-thin chassis, full high-definition quality, and picture improvements for interlaced video signals (such as those from VCRs, cable boxes, and non-progressive-scan DVD players). Heading the great features is IDSC Digital 720P, which coverts all 480i and 480p signals (as from progressive-scan DVD players and DTV set-top boxes) to 720p. Frame, line, and pixel doubling are all used to create progressive, full-frame images from standard interlaced signals (such as composite-video signals from DVD players, VCRs, and camcorders).

The set's amazing specs--including 1200:1 contrast ratio, 600 cd/m2 brightness, 0.81mm x 0.81mm pixel pitch, and 1,024 x 768 pixel resolution--put most LCD monitors to shame. A ColorStream HD component-video input provides the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from DVD players or satellite receivers). PC inputs include 15-pin RGB input, a DVI 1.0 input with high-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP), and an RS-232 interface. TV modes consist of 480p, 480i, 525p, 525i, 625i, 625p, 720p, 1035i, and 1080i. PC modes consist of VGA, SVGA, XGA, SXGA, UXGA (4X3), W-VGA, and W-XGA (16x9).

Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. Four TheaterWide modes enable full-screen viewing of varying widescreen movie formats. Color temperature control provides three user-selectable color temperature settings for achieving the optimal white balance. This allows the customer to achieve the best picture quality in any viewing environment or personal picture preference. Digital Noise Reduction circuitry optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable. Though the set comes with neither mounting brackets nor a stand, it is easily mountable.

I did a ton of research on Plasmas before I bought the 42HP82 from Toshiba and here's what I learned:

All of the entry level models lack the picture clarity and the true 1080i HD resolution of the Toshiba. In fact, my research showed that this unit was the brightest and matched the top viewing radius of anything on the market.

The built in filters do a tremendous job of improving non-digital signals, but if you are going to spend this kind of $$$ on a Plasma, you should complement it with the Samsung SIR TS160 HD DSS Receiver.

I think it's important to note that Toshiba waited 1 year after everyone else stared selling Plasmas before introducing their first screens. It shows in this product in many ways. From the easy setup menus to the look and feel of the product itself.

The bottom line is the picture and you will not be disappointed.

We bought a 42" Toshiba plasma tv. It worked for one month. Toshiba has sent a repair crew to our home three times and they can't fix it. we're out $5000. Toshiba promised to fix it or replace it, but, three months later, it's still broken and we're still waiting for our new tv. Since Amazon has a no-return policy for big-screen tv's, we're at the mercy of Toshiba and their terrible customer service. Before shelling out this much money for a plasma, I strongly recommend doing research on the web about manufacturer's customer service. If I had done so, I would have never bought a plasma from Toshiba.

I didn't believe the customer reviews about several of the televisions that are listed on Amazon.com until I became interested in this 50" Plasma Flat Panel HD Ready TV. I was completely sold on purchasing the television, but something told me to read this items customer reviews, as well as some of the reviews for other televisions that are being sold for dirt cheap. After reading other reviews, I found that all of these items are placed by scammers. They all suggest that you purchase your new television anywhere but within the confines of Amazon.com so that they can guarantee that you AREN'T protected against their scams. In fact, I decided to e-mail David Munchen, who's selling this television for $600 USD (including taxes, shipping and handling). Our conversation was identical to another customer review that I saw posted with a Zenith 60" Television. Our conversation was as follows:
