I was a little leary of buying this because of other reviews on the net, from professional critics. However, none of them hold water. This is a fantastic HDTV, and the extra features with internet access make it perfect (pandora radio, even youtube). The picture is excellent from any angle, multiple inputs allow connections from any source. One thing that isn't mentioned is that the set will turn itself off after four hours if there's no input, that is set as a default. It was purchased for my elderly mom, and she loves it. Oh, and it's only a couple inches thick, and so protrudes from the wall even less than a picture frame!

I went throug 2 of these TVs and was dissapointed with both. The biggest issue for me was the flashlighting on all the corners especially the upper right. They were so bright that they dominated the screen. Dark room viewing was not possible with this tv because the bright spots would show up even more. I had the tv calibrated but it didn't really help with the flashlighting. I will post pictures to show the bright spots that I am talking about. The overall picture is above average from straight on. Get about 20 degrees off center and you will see the picture start to look washed out. Go a little farther and the colors start to look weird. Another thing to watch out for is the screen coating. It does a good job reducing reflections but if any light hits it directly you will see a rainbow full on all the way across the screen. I bought black out curtains to take care of this but that just intensified the bright spots in the corners. I just couldn't win. I own a TOSHIBA 52XV645U and love it. I prefer that tv over this LED TV. I even own a TOSHIBA laptop so I am not a TOSHIBA hater.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really impressed with this tv, June 8, 2010
By
This review is from: Toshiba 55UX600U 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV with Net TV (Black Gloss) (Electronics)
This tv has a great picture and lots of good features. Picture has many user settings for fine-tuning and calibrating (expert modes). Apps like vudu, etc are fast and helpful. Thin profile and lightweight are nice attractions.
Couple of my concerns before viewing were the 120hz and the glossy screen (glare). I've watched football, baseball, basketball and haven't noticed any blurring at all. The screen does have some reflection but once the set is on you cannot see it at all. Picture is very bright and dynamic. Incredible blacks for an edge-lit. This picture and price would rival or beat any plasma or samsung.
Also very energy efficient. Great tv.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even good to be a computer monitor. What else can I say?, November 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toshiba 55UX600U 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV with Net TV (Black Gloss) (Electronics)
Pros:
1. Thin. It is only 2 inches thick. It is very thin considering it is 55 inch TV. Even though there are 1 inch thick LED TVs from Samsung and LG, this TV is thin enough for me.
2. Low energy consumption. With "Auto View" (default setting), it automatically adjusts the backlight using only 45 to 152 watts (normally 70 ~ 122w) per hour depending on how bright are the room and the TV scene. TV will use almost 0 watt on standby with power saving "power on" option (default). Fast "power on" option will use 21w on standby.
3. It will automatically power off in 15 minutes when there is no signal (default). If you use it also as a computer monitor and set auto monitor off, this TV will turn itself off after 15 minutes. This TV also has a inactivity auto off "Automatic Power Down" which will turn itself off when no button on remote or on tv has been pushed for 4 hours.
4. Network "Widget". Once you connect your tv to your router with either wired or wireless (wireless adapter included) network, you can watch some cool internet videos. Youtube XL didn't work for me, but I could watch youtube on standard version in Youtube XL. But this is just additional feature that I can play with. I'd rather use my computer, since I use this TV also as a monitor for one of my computer.

Cons:
1. Color changes a bit when off the center. It is acceptable to me, but may not to some people. Its viewing angle is almost 180 degrees (90 degrees from the center), but when it goes past only about 60 degrees, the color will change a little. It is quite noticeable when the screen is full of someone's face.
2. Reflection. Its gloss finish and shiny screen will show reflected images of the surroundings if there are any light in surroundings and the TV shows dark scene. Many TVs are like this, so doesn't bother me much.
3. In order to have 1080p as a monitor, you have to use HDMI input. PC cable input will not give you 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution. If you don't have hdmi output from your computer, you will have to have DVI to HDMI converter and HDMI cable, or DVI to HDMI cable. Don't forget the 3.5mm audio cable from your computer to the TV. You also have to change TV settings. In "AV settings", change to "HDMI2" and HDMI2 audio to "Analog". Picture Size has to be changed to "Native" for true 1080p.
4. Only one Component (3 rca video and 2 rca audio) or composite (1 rca video and 2 rca audio) input. It only have one component input that can be also used as composite. If you have to have more than 1 of these kinds of connections, you will have to find HDMI converter.
5. 10W audio sound was kind of weird to me at first. But I got used to it now.

The biggest thing I worried about was the flashlight effect that other reviewers were mentioned about Edge Lit LED TVs. However I couldn't notice anything like that on my TV. I turned off all the lights and paused the TV on a dark scene, I failed to notice any bright spot on any corners until I changed the brightness to higher than my acceptable range. Most likely most of us won't have chance to see what is called flashlight effect. I don't think you will have to worry about having rainbow effect either, unless you like to shine a light on your TV while you are watching it.

This TV works great as 1920 x 1080 computer monitor. This means this TV has true 1080p screen.
I am satisfied with this TV. If you can bear with any of the cons that I mentioned, I think you will be happy with this TV too.

I'm not sure how many of the reviews have negative comments about this TV unless they're really trying to find something wrong with it. It's worked great for me, and I haven't found a better deal anywhere on the internet - not even the Black Friday ads. The only minor flaw could be the sound, but I have it hooked up to a receiver anyway with surround sound so it sounds great for me. I would highly recommend it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gonga Deal!, November 3, 2010

I just bought this TV last week when it was advertised for $1199.00! What a great deal! That was a price I was waiting for. I got the TV yesterday and set it up fairly quickly. I have to admit I was a little overwhelmed considering this TV has so much more to offer. My owners manual was much bigger than my previous TV, an oldschool 46" plasma that burnt out. It didn't even have HDMI inputs on it. I'm happy to report that my pictures look awesome whether I'm watching anime, playing my PS3, or BD. I have to agree with one of the other customers about the sound, but what do you expect? Of course a nice speaker set and receiver can enhance your overall experience. One of the coolest features is that is has a wi-fi adapter for folks that can't hardwire their TV sets. Oh and it is definitely slim.

4.0 out of 5 stars better than expected, November 12, 2010

This review is from: Toshiba 55UX600U 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV with Net TV (Black Gloss) (Electronics)
I recently purchased this tv about 2 weeks ago. my brother in law is always looking on this website for great deals. He recently purchased a small flat screen for his office. He let me know about this deal of the day. I owned a 50 inch Sony Projection TV for about 6 years with no problems. I received the Toshiba about 5 days after ordering it (with a great deal 2 year 0% financing). CEVA dropped the box off in my living room. NOTE: please confirm whether AMAZON comp'd the "White Glove Service". Apparently they did but the 2 guys who delivered it made it seem like I would be charged if I asked for it. so I told them I would open it.

The TV comes very well packaged. I opened it out of excitement and noticed a gray blotchy area on top left frame of the tv screen. I immediately told myself it is not acceptable. I called Amazon and they delivered a new one 5 days later through a different shipping company. I then questioned the "white glove service" and they mentioned it should have been complimentary from them due to a big purchase. So don't let the delivery guys go if you want the white glove service.

My boyfriend received the second delivery and they denied the white glove service even though I was supposed to receive it. they basically opened up the box (opens from the top like a lid) and that's all they did claiming they are not allowed to do more than that?. not what I expected for white glove. I prefered it that way since I didn't want them to do anything to this tv.

this TV had no blemishes. hooked it up and works great. the corner lights the others are talking about is so faint for me that you hardly notice it. The rainbow someone showed on the tv screen seems like it would do that if you have direct light pointed at it. or lighting from my windows do not affect the quality of the tv. since I read ALL the reviews I looked at all the potential negatives everyone was talking about and didn't see anything that would make me want to return it. Not a deal breaker for me unless theirs is more prominent.

Sound-way better than I thought. it's actually pretty great. I will probably buy speakers in the future if I become a movie/game guru, otherwise very happy with existing speakers.

quite heavy so you need 2 people to help lift if you want to move it.
Looks great in my living room. Clarity is great compared to my sony. soooo many tv options it will take a while to play with it all. I am looking forward to enjoying this tv for a long time. Thanks to my bro in law. can't beat the price!! 1199.00 and No tax!! sorry so long, thought people should know the quality. I am the cheapest of the cheapest so for me this tv was worth the buy.
Amazon has great customer service from what I notice. they dropped the new one off and took the old one. I would only question the directions of the delivery guys. seeems like they only want to drop it off and nothing more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great TV for someone on a budget, glare is not an issue at all, November 10, 2010

From another site, it is stated that this is actually a new 2010 model for Toshiba and this is probably the best priced 55" LED TV on the market. I got it from Amazon when it was on sale for under $1200 and it was $100s less than other retailers. This also is priced $100s less than similar models from Samsung or LG so I was originally a little concerned about the quality of the TV.

We have directv HD receiver and the TV looks great with HD content. SD content looks not very impressive as expected but when we hooked it up with Blueray and the Avatar movie at 1080p, the picture looks absolutely awesome! I'm no videophile or expert but the various picture settings with standard tweaking look very decent and we are happy with the quality of the TV. The sound is acceptable for casual viewing as everybody states but you can always hook the audio to a surround sound receiver if desired.

Note that this TV is to replace a 50" Samsung plasma TV, which we had recently purchased intended to replace a 42" Phillips LCD TV. The plasma TV was a mistake as the glare becomes unacceptable and makes it very difficult to watch during daytime. The TV location faces a wall of windows with lots of light. The glare on our original Phillips LCD was acceptable but with this LED TV the glare improved quite a bit. We are definitely keeping this LED TV and the plasma now goes to the bedroom! I saw another review on this model saying the glare is bad. From my own experience, at least compared to my plasma and other LCD, the glare on this LED is much much better and daytime viewing is totally watchable even with lots of light. I don't have a "matte" screen TV so I can't compare for sure, but in my situation with the TV facing a wall of windows, this LED TV is good and glare is not an issue for us at all. You can still see some very minor reflection at dark scenes but that doesn't bother us and is better than LCD/plasma.

In summary, if you are on a budget, this is a great choice. For the same price, don't settle for a smaller screen or LCD TV, you can instead get this bigger screen(55") LED(better technology than LCD) TV.

A very nice 55" LED HD unit. Got free shipping and CEVA Freight delivered and set up the unit, took the packaging away when completed, and since I had my install location completely prepared, took about 20 minutes start to finish. Toshiba has a little larger "frame" or bezel around the picture area so the unit takes a little more space than an LG but not so much that it's a problem. Connected this Toshiba to my Onkyo THX receiver that upscales everything to 1080p and I was blown away by the image quality of even standard DVDs. As with most TVs, the speakers that are built in are nothing an audiophile would embrace but since I'll never use them, it's not an issue. Obviously, with a screen this large, it's imperative that your source material be as high quality as possible, (DVD or better), or you'll be disappointed in the picture. My older style Laser Discs, even when upscaled to 1080p, are not the same visual quality as DVDs, but they are still watchable. All-in-all, a very nice HD unit and the price was right.

2.0 out of 5 stars On Second Thought, November 5, 2010

This review is from: Toshiba 55UX600U 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV with Net TV (Black Gloss) (Electronics)
I purchased this TV last Friday during the Black Friday countdown. It was more than I was planning to spend, but at the countdown price was a very good deal. As an old retired geezer, this has enough features to keep me going a few years and that is another reason I purchased it. I used free shipping and the shipping folks brought it yesterday, set it up in less than ten minutes, including the stand. I hooked the sat cable to the side and plugged her in. Wow...great picture right out of the box. I am comparing my old TV, a Toshiba 46" HD I bought in 2004 at a Sears Black Friday 4 hour sale for $995.00 (that's 1,150.00 in current dollars). Significant difference in picture....much better. Fairly simple menu and remote even for an old guy. Hooked up the wii and games seem better. If this TV serves me as well as the 46" has (I am passing it along to another family member) I will be more than happy. I have not noticed any of the problems a few other posts talked about. But again, sometimes you get a bad individual unit and sometimes you get poor service. My experience with Amazon has been excellent. Have been buying mostly on line for the past four or five years and Amazon in particular has consistently given me a good product at a good price.

THE ABOVE WAS WRITTEN FIRST. THE SET DEVELOPED A PROBLEM WITH THE PICTURE. A 8" line developed top to bottom on the screen (black) about 14 inches from the right side. It would come and go, so I decided to return the first set. I asked Amazon if I could have a replacement and return of the defective set at the same time or I would just return the set.

Amazon emailed me that they would pickup the defective set when they delivered the replacement. The day of the switch, a Pilot representative came with a small panel truck and drug the unit up my walk and into the house. He knew nothing about taking back the defective unit. I had to insist that he at least open the box so I could view the new unit before I signed the waybill.

It took another week to get rid of the defective unit (two people came to pick that up... go figure). In the mean time, the replacement unit did not perform out of the box as well (the picture) set to autoview. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about tweeking a TV but have the picture at a good crisp picture now. Will probably keep the replacement. First lesson. If a large item, the service is wonderful on ordering, not so good for returns. Second lesson. The replacement unit had a manufacture date two months before the defective unit. This must be a new type of electronic inventory method (first in last out), which means the unit came from who knows where. Third lesson. Ordering on line for a large item is a roll of the dice. If the unit is ok, everything is honkey dorry.....

I will continue to buy on line, but maybe not large expensive items.
