Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba takes television into the future with the feature- and technology-packed 62-inch TheaterWide 62HM94 DLP integrated HDTV. For starters, the widescreen 62 HM94 employs a proprietary system called TALEN (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine) t o maximize the brightness and contrast of its Texas Instruments HD2+ DLP chip, w hich has a native resolution of 1,280 x 720-pixel progressive resolution (720p). Thanks to this technology, Toshiba's TheaterWide TVs challenge direct-view CRT TVs when it comes to reproducing deep blacks and crisp details in dark or shadow y scenes.

What is DLP?
The DLP processor DLP, or Digital Light Processing, is a technology that bounces a colored light beam across an array of hundreds of thousands of hinge-mounted microscopic mirrors attached to a single chip, called a "micro mirror device" (below, pictured with the head of a pin).
DLP mirrors dwarfed by the head of a pin
Each of the mirrors can be pointed toward or away from the light source thousands of times per second, providing not only minute color detail but also sharper resolution than even LCD displays.
Detail of resolution comparison between LCD and DLP
Next on the list is the built-in HDTV tuner, which can receive both digital terr estrial and digital cable broadcasts (ATSC and QAM), so there's no need to buy e xtra components to get hi-def signals. Of course standard-definition video looks great, too, thanks to Toshiba's multistep PixelPure video processing system, wh ich optimizes the three main picture quality factors: resolution, contrast, and color. All incoming signals are upconverted by the built-in "scaler" to match th e DLP chip's 720p resolution. The set's TheaterFine HD Super Fine Pitch screen r educes the physical space between the lines on the lenticular screen, resulting in a finer, sharper, more detailed picture.

In addition, a CableCARD slot gives you the option to connect to cable TV withou t a set-top box, giving you access to analog, digital cable, HDTV, and premium c able channels like HBO and Cinemax (if supported by your cable company). Two Fir eWire ports with industry standard DTVLink capability enable digital networking and recording. TV Guide On Screen, an interactive program guide, offers simple, user-friendly channel surfing. The TheaterNet IR/1394 control system enables eff ortless analog and digital external device control, and an OmniViewer Memory Car d Slot (compatible with Secure Digital, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, CompactFlash, and MultiMediaCard) with a JPEG viewer allows quick, easy viewing of digital pho tos.

The TV's excellent picture clarity is due to DFine Hi-Speed VSM (velocity scan m odulation), which improves contrast, while the CableClear DNR+ digital noise red uction optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, minimizing video noise ("snow") for a clean, crisp image. Cinema Mode circuitry (3:2 pulldown) identif ies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence t o more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction hel ps eliminate dot crawl and color bleed and significantly reduces detail noise, s een as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. Color t emperature controls allow you to adjust white balance. The "Warm" setting reduce s the color temperature to an NTSC-standard 6,500 degrees Kelvin and delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room. "Medium" and "Cool" provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as light levels are inc reased.

The 62HM94 has plenty of inputs for connecting all your audio and video componen ts. In back you'll find two RF, two composite, two S-video, and two HD ColorStre am components, as well as an HDMI digital input. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedi a Interface) is an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface that supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus 8-channel digital audio--all on a single cable. A set of front composite and S-video inputs make hooking up a game console or camcorder a snap.

Other features include HD Window dual-tuner POP (picture-on-picture) with PIP so und for listening to two programs simultaneously, the new Radiance DC lamp with high brightness and lower power modes for extended life, individual audio/video settings by input type, sleep and wake timers, Real Speed progressive scanning t o create smoother diagonal lines, Color Transient Improver for sharp transitions on color changes without bleeding, and Color Detail Enhancer to maintain fine i mage detail in color saturated areas.

Aside from the 20-watts-per-channel stereo speaker system, the 62HM94 uses MTS f or programming with stereo sound and SAP for receiving a second audio track in a nother language. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). The StableSound volume leveler eliminates drasti c volume spikes while changing channels or when channels go to a commercial brea k.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally I picked a very good TV.., February 5, 2005
This review is from: Toshiba 62HM94 62-Inch 720p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
I was very skeptical to puy my 3K+ money into a TV if it wouldn't be worth it. i did a lot of online research going through lot of HDTV Reviews especially DLP ones because I wasn't interested in Plasma/LCD etc because of their few well-known prolems and comparatively higher-costs. Initially was interested in Samsung6163 but later thought of 5674 but because of higher/better features-to-Cost ratio I settled with Toshiba 62HM94. For last 5 weeks, I have been proud owner of this fabulaous jewel. I have hooked it up with my Onkyo NR801 Receiver and Infinity TSS1100 speakers and a simple cheaper progressive-scan DVD player (with Component Video and Digital Coaxial/Optical output). And i don't need to go to a Theater anymore. Excellent unbelievable (more that I had expected) picture quality which mattered me most in my selection, Audio was too pretty good but I am using my home-theater setup. It's pretty light-weight (100 lbs) and compact size. Only 1 thing I found in Samsung and wished Toshiba too could have..Slim Bezel and TV-speakers at bottom instead of sides. I am very happy with Toshiba which delivers standard digital-cable signal as good that I can think of what if I drop my plan to subscribe HDTV...

5.0 out of 5 stars HD on this set is unbelievable!, January 28, 2005

This review is from: Toshiba 62HM94 62-Inch 720p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
I have had this set for three weeks now. It looked pretty good right out of the box. Now it looks even better. The HD channels are fantastic, digital channels are chrystal clear and even SD channels look very good after some tweaking. The secret to a better SD picture on HDTVs seems to be to turn the contrast down and the sharpness way down! A couple of days ago I added a Motorola Signal Booster and that really made a big diffence. The SD channels look a lot clearer and the color is better. I am getting my HD programing through a Motorola 6208 DVR through my cable company. They don't have cable cards available yet. I have everything running througha Yamaha RX-V2500 receiver so I have the TV speakers turned off.

I am adding to this review to report one problem with the set. Actually the problem is not just with this particular model but will all Toshiba sets that include the built in TV Guide program. I have had the TV for about a month now and the set is great except that the built in TV Guide does not work at all. When I try to access the TV Guide I get a message saying "There is no data for this screen." I have gone through the set up several times but the problem persists. From listening in on the AVS forums I learned that this is an ongoing problem with the set. I called Toshiba who acknowledged the problem and said that they are working on it. They thought they had it fixed but it did not work. This is causing a big problem for people using the cable card because they have no other cable guide available. People who bought the Symbio at the same time that they bought their sets are partcularly upset because without the TV Guide the Symbio will not work. However this is the only problem that I have with the set right now. If you plan to use a STB with this set then the problems should be minimal because you can use the cable guide that comes with that.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far... A very good TV when viewing in HDTV., April 30, 2005
This review is from: Toshiba 62HM94 62-Inch 720p DLP HDTV (Electronics)
I purchased this TV in 2/05. I was initially unimpressed with the picture quality. In standard definition cable signal the picture can appear to varying degrees, a bit out of focus and fuzzy. I was very concerned and called customer service to have the TV looked at. They were very helpful and located a local repair center for me so that I could then call to schedule an in home appointment. I later learned that HDTV's are designed to show there best picture with an HDTV signal. So I upgraded my cable service to HDTV. It made a tremendous difference when viewing a program on an HDTV channel. In high definition the picture is crystal clear with excellent brightness and color. Sound quality is very impressive even when at maximum volume (no distortion). The theatre type sound effect can be improved with the addition of a surround sound system but it is not needed.

One minor fault, I was not able to get the TV Guide feature to work as a previous writer had mentioned
