BACKGROUND

I recently relocated for work and did not have time to unpack and reassemble my home network. I was using my trusty Toshiba Satellite R10 as my home workstation. Cords were everywhere and there were not enough USB ports. I wanted a docking station, but my machine is older and I was unsure if such a beast still existed. I was thrilled when I found this item listed on Amazon.com, but I was wary of how well it would work with my tablet pc. I was also concerned because my R10 is a SuSE linux box.

EXPECTATIONS

[1] I wanted to easily connect an external monitor
[2] I wanted to power on the R10 via the docking station
[3] I hoped to connect my external monitor via a DVI port
[4] I wanted USB ports
[5] I wanted to easily disconnect the laptop if I should have the need

RESULTS

This docking station is of excellent quality in terms of workmanship and materials. It met all of my expectations and exceeded some.

It was easy to connect an external monitor. I connect both a VGA and a DVI cable. I was naive. I later learned that my R10 does not have DVI capability and even if it did, it could only output one ... dvi or vga. This observation was no fault of the docking station.

There is a power on button and also a power on light.

The back plane is nicely organized to prevent wires from being unnecessarily close to one another. On the back plane is PS/2 keyboard port, PS/2 mouse port, VGA port, DVI port, serial COM port, parallel printer port, modem jack, ethernet jack, four USB ports, external speaker jack, and microphone jack.

My item came with the ac adapter. When I searched online, not every supplier included the ac adapter.

The docking station's two retention levers are adjustable in order to accept different Toshiba laptop models. The retention level adjustment was difficult to understand from the included user guide and from looking at the docking station. I finally resolved it by placing the laptop on the station so that the connector was inserted into the laptop's docking station port. I then adjusted the retaining levers accordingly. The procedure is not obvious, however it is not overly difficult either.

SUMMARY

I am 100% satisfied with this item. Its quality exceeded my expectations and it has all of the functionality that I desired. Its price point is perfect.
