I'm reasonably convinced that anyone that gave this item more than 1 star is being paid by Toshiba. I couldn't recommend this less. If anti-stars existed, I would give this item 5/5 negative stars. The one good thing about this hard drive is that it's incredibly amazing that it sucks this bad.

Disconnects every minute and a half? Check.
Reloads address bar after every file selection? Check.
Takes 15 minutes to delete a notepad file? Check.
Frozen for 10 minutes only to tell you none of your files were transferred? Check

This product is Hal at the END of Space Odyssey. If you see this, run. Get as far away as possible.

P.S. Good luck trying to find a way to contact customer support.

I have 3 of these (two 500GB and one 1TB). I am a computer expert and have been building/running computers since before DOS.

This uses the wonderful (so far) Toshiba MQ01ABD050 hard disk inside. It is a single platter drive and probably the quietest drive I have ever ran across. It is the closest thing to silent this side of an SSD. I like this for when I'm working on/editing movies, etc. -- much better than my 10KRPM Velociraptors or WDC Blacks :)

The performance of this drive is typical of the 500GB per platter 5400RPM drives out there. But, it is super quiet.

UNFORTUNATELY, all of these Toshiba Automatic Backup drives use some absolute garbage asmedia USB 3.0 controller daughter card. I am running into massive problems on all these drives and enclosures using USB 3.0 with both on-board (Intel Core i5 Marvell chipset) controllers and PCIe controllers (TI chipset based). These range from continuous connects/disconnects, random disconnects, file corruption, weird chkdsk errors, etc. From the symptoms, I believe there are basic flaws in the way the USB 3.0 stack is implemented on this chipset/firmware. Usually, it manifests itself in weird timeouts, but ultimately data corruption.

It is really too bad because these are very attractive enclosures. They are plastic, but have a metallic look and a slightly rubberized feel to them. Next to the USB cable is a tiny blue LED indicator light.

ALL of the physical hard drives when removed from the enclosures perform flawlessly in numerous other connection methods including direct SATA attach to the Intel chipset SATA controllers, to add-in PCIe SATA cards, to a similar Seagate Backup Plus USB 3.0 enclosure, to another USB 3.0 SATA dock. In short, it's the Toshiba enclosure.

I actually got this unit from a local Walmart. It was about 58 dollars, and the plan was for it to hold my excess media files so I could free up space on my computer and/or transfer them to auxiliary machines. While the unit claims to have "automatic back up software," it doesn't seem to actually back up many systems. When using it on my machine (a TOSHIBA SATELLITE using an NTSF format) a message always popped up that there was an error, and the drive would NOT be able to back up files. Trust me, you'll have to do it manually (and most likely you won't be able to create a bootable backup disc image, which is what the unit claims to be able to do).
Transfer rates differ from computer to computer, and sometimes on the same rig (yes I tested this). Transferring my video file folders (approximately 160gb) would take half an hour sometimes and four hours other times on the same computer.
The low score however isn't for these problem alone. I purchased the hard drive in late December but by Early February the USB 3.0 port began malfunctioning, and I would have to turn the unit upside down to get the surmised short (I expect it was a short in the circuit but I haven't opened it in order to avoid voiding any warranty there might be).

Overall some pros of this product are as follows:
+Fairly easy to use. People who are not very computer savvy may be able to have some success with this product (it's really just the luck of the draw with your unit
+The connection chord is fairly thick so it's unlikely that you'll have problems with that part
+The port on the hard drive itself is USB 3.

I previously had a seagate 500gig drive. Its a usb 2.0 drive, but its completely full. I've had it for years, and it has been amazing. No issues with it at all. Though sadly, I purchased it for 49$ on Amazon in 2010. Its currently 69$ at the moment.Like other reviewers on here, I had purchased this from Walmart. They had a sale on these for 50$ last year. The reviews were up and down. Alot of failures. But I thought, oh. They just are too rough with it. Sadly, I was wrong.

Sadly, I haven't had good luck with Toshiba products. My laptop from them 3 years back, the motherboard had crappy soldering. Everyone goes on about how high quality their products are. But I've yet to buy one that fully works.

Essentially, this is a true 3.0 usb drive. It isn't as fast as my most current Seagate 1tb usb 3.0 drive. But its certainly only a few seconds slower. Though, the 3.0 is why this drive is on clearance almost everywhere you go. For whatever reason, the pins on this drive short out very, very easily. For mine to work now, I have to press up on the connector. I tried a 2.0 connector, same deal. Then the 3.0 connector from my Seagate, I have to do the exact same thing. Problem is, I called toshiba up. They refused to replace it after 90 days. Well, this isn't in my local Walmart Systems anymore. So they refuse to exchange it out for me. It was a pretty aggravating few hours trying to get the data off the disc. Though it was done eventually.

You can try getting this drive, and maybe you won't have any issues. But take it from me. I've still got my first external drive from 2007. Works perfectly. This drive lasted 3 months and 8 days. Certainly hasn't been roughed up or anything. Its just sat there.
