*1. Internet access required. 2. USB connection required 3. External HDD Capacity: One Gigabyte (GB) means 10(to the 9th) = 1,000,000,000 bytes and One Terabyte (TB) means 10(to the 12th) = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes using powers of 10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1GB = 230 = 1,073,741,824 bytes and 1TB = 240 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity will also be less if the computer includes one or more pre-installed operating systems, pre-installed software applications, or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary. 4. USB 3.0: 5Gbps is the maximum theoretical interface transfer rate per the specifications of the Universal Serial Bus 3.0. Actual transfer rate will vary depending on your system configuration and other factors. 5. The preloaded NTI Backup Now EZ software is compatible with Windows OS only. 6. Includes free downloadable copy of Pogoplug PC with 10GB of free cloud storage. Internet connection required for remote access. 7. Warranty: The terms and conditions of Toshiba's standard limited warranty are available at www.warranty.toshiba.com.

Buying a hard drive can be a crap shoot. All hard drives fail in time. The trick is to try and find one with the best track record.
I needed a 1TB portable to simply drag and drop music, pics, vids and documents to so I could free up some space on my laptop. I had been trying to decide between a WD and a Seagate for about a week. I read numerous reviews online complaining about some issues with both. I decided against the WD drive because of all the complaints about being locked into using their loaded software, faulty cables, and poor customer service and 1 year warranty. The Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB had some complaints about suddenly not being recognized by windows after dismounting and remounting so I started looking at the Canvio Connect. If you read the reviews it's obvious that the Canvio has some complaints as well, but since it was on sale locally for less than I could buy it from Amazon I grabbed one.

So far so good. I've had the 1TB Canvio Connect plugged in for 3 days now to my 3 year old Windows 7 laptop with USB 2.0 ports. I've transferred, deleted and re-transferred 75GB's of MP3's. I've had it hooked up directly to the USB port and also through a cheap Belkin 4 port USB hub. The transfer rate (USB 2.0) for me is 13MB/s. The drive is nearly silent, did not get warm during transfers and so far has given me zero issues. I am not using the included software. I may check it out but for now I am simply dragging and dropping files onto the drive. I went with 4 stars because of the local sale price (64.99) and the plug and play simplicity I've experienced so far. I'll come back in a year and give it 5 stars if it's been reliable.

Like many, this external hard drive constantly connected and disconnected. I had to change my USB power settings so it would stay connect. I am not happy I had to do this, but it is more of an issue with the design of USB 3.0 ports and power distribution to them than a Toshiba problem. Also, I did not find a problem with the USB cord between the hard drive and the computer as some have reported. However, external hard drive manufactures should know the USB 3.0 problem and warn the public. My rating is based on the failure of Toshiba to communicate a possible problem with the power settings on USB 3.0 ports. It would help if the product came with a quick reference card noting possible problems with computer settings so I would not waste so much of my time diagnosing the problem.
This is what I did to make it stay connected - control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/USB settings /USB selective suspend setting
Then set the plugged in option to disabled.

I was interested in this drive because of its capacity, small form factor and the absence of a plug. I figure that this makes it a very nice choice for a disk for occasional, e.g. backup, in the home with laptops.

Before I ordered it, my main concern about the drive was the possibility that Toshiba would do what Western Digital has done with some of its disk drives:

[...]

Fortunately I can state that the Toshiba drives do not have this defect. They behave like ordinary disk drives. The drives that I got have been reformatted as half NTFS, for ease of use by my wife, and half encrypted EXT4, for security, and this has worked fine.

So for now my plan is to buy the Toshiba disk drives because they work and avoid Western Digital passports.

At the moment this is the best 2TB drive in the market. As G-Drive has yet to deliver a 2TB portable drive, currently there are 2 companies offering 2TB portable drives: Toshiba and Western Digital with the respective "Canvio" and "My Passport" lines. Both are excellent, but Toshiba is winning.

The Toshiba Canvio is completly silent, just like previows Canvio 1TB generation and the My Passport drives. Its impossible to hear this drive working, even with your ear right next to it. Toshiba continues to deliver a super quality drive

The drive is beautiful, with reflective glossy on top and bottom. The quality of the plastic on the side has been improved to a stronger material then found on the previows Canvio 1TB generation. Its a really gorgeous drive.

The LED light flashes when writing/reading. Its not a white light, I would say its a very light grey. Moreover, the LED is not bright at all, its very soft on the eyes. Therefore, Toshiba has achieved a perfect light accuracy. Its very noticeble when you look at it, but impossible to distract you while you are working on the computer, you don't ever notice it blinking. Perfect!

I currently dislike the design of the My Passport drives, as they are full of circles on them. Another company making excellent drives is G-Drive, but they only offer portables up to 1TB and for the same price of the 2TB Canvios and My Passports (the G-drives have Firewire ports in addition to USB 3.0 tough)

On a side note, there are of course other 2TB drives in the market, offered by companies such as Seagate, Buffallo and even the "My Book" line from Western Digital. But these drives are very large and VERY noisy, not to mention they also heat a lot.
