I am having this tablet for over two weeks now, and here are my impressions:

The good:

1. Screen is excellent. High resolution, not dim - I use mine at around 70% brightness level, good, not oversaturated colors. Using a remote desktop program, I am able to see the entire 27'' screen of my work computer in it's full 2560x1440 glory. Text is still readable and I can use the supplied pen to click on those tiny buttons. The screen on this tablet is infinitely better than HD screens. Is it better than full HD? It's probably depends on one's preferences, I would think there is still a noticeable difference.

4. Toshiba TrueNote - the note taking app on the tablet. It may lack some advanced features, like inserting pictures, but otherwise nicely done. In default configuration, it has four notebooks, but more can be added. Sometimes, 'ink' appears with a slight delay, but overall it's easy to use, has decent character recognition software and is able to export notes to a number of applications (mail, office, etc).

3. Charger. The tablet would not charge through USB cable, it uses a dedicated charger. The tablet fully charges in 2-3 hours, which would not be possible with USB (AFAIK). The charger is similar to laptop ones - it has two parts and the cable is very long, so I can use the tablet even when it is connected to an outlet. Spares are available on Toshiba website for $40, which is ok for an OEM product.

4. Speakers are good enough to produce 3d surround effects when watching a movie (but see below).

5. Micro HDMI.

The bad:

1. When I received the tablet, I was dismayed at its performance. My Android phone (also a 4 core CPU, but a snapdragon) was running circles around it.

**Update July 28, 2013** -- See bottom --

The Specs on this tablet are fantastic. quad core processor, 2 gig of ram, 32 gig storage, 2500x1600 screen resolution, active digitizer pen. Ok so it is thicker then a few sheets of paper, and toshiba is notorious for locking down the boot loader. no real reason to need root the tablet as it does not have a 3g radio in it.

So my review. over all its great. the think neww is not really a problem as I put it in a case so having a mega thin device was not going to be high on my list of priorties. I bought this for the screen resolution and the digitizer pen.

The screen is amazing! no problems with bleed like the last model excite had the pen works great (wish they would have made a spot to put it) battery life is ok but it is good for the day of hard use.

The Pen works but to get good use out of the pen it requires software. This is why I only gave it 4 stars. their pen software is a little lacking.. ok a lot lacking.. I have a Note 2 as a phone and there is leaps and bounds difference between the software.

in fact at this point I don't use the toshiba software I use third party apps for everything to do with the pen.

so the pen works but they could make it better.

Good camera's front and back speakers are way better then anything I have heard on a tablet.

So in summary it looks like Toshiba might be back on track with there quirky devices that make you just want to buy them. they don't really push the envelope in technology it like they make bulges in odd places.

**July 28th --
Discovered that the video camera will not focus the camera at resolutions 720/1080p it does focus the camera at 480 resolution.

Called Toshiba tech support.

Thank you for the feedback, S. George.

Toshiba is dedicated to providing our customers with the best tablet experience possible and have released an OTA (over-the-air) update for the Excite Write tablets. This update will correct the rear camera's video focus that some users are experiencing. The update is available immediately through the pre-installed Toshiba Service Station app and is recommended for all Excite Write users.

Verified Purchase
Rant: no ability to root the tablet is bad, Toshiba please listen to your customers. If nothing else it would make it possible to remove the pre-installed apps, who thought it would be a great idea to have everybody have backgammon installed?

The tablet is blazingly fast, even with much higher resolution it's a lot faster than Tegra 3 tablets. E.g my other (tegra 3) tablet skips when listening to radio (TuneIn) and play a game (e.g Atlantis: Pearls of the Deep or Beach Buggy) at same time while Toshiba doesn't break a sweat.

Major feature why I got the tablet is the pen and it does not disappoint. Using it with Autocad Sketchbook, love it.

I received a Toshiba Excite Write tablet as a gift earlier this year. Given the price, I probably would not have purchased this device on my own, but am now glad I have it. I have also read many of the online reviews, on my way to learning about my device, so I understand some of the reasons why technical experts may not highly rate the device. I use computers at work and at home, but did not previously own a tablet and do not have previous experience with Android operating systems. While I suspect a teenager or a child might pick it up much more easily than I am, I am really enjoying learning to use this device and actually having fun with it. It comes with a few games installed -- so that was my first experience. The games seem to run very well and very fast (my one pet peeve is a slow interface). There are additional free games that can be pulled over and also games for a fee. To use the tablet with the internet, I had to set up a home wireless router - but once that was done the tablet worked fine. I also had to set up a google account which I think would be required with some of the applications -- although maybe a technical expert could get around this. I have not used the google email account yet because I have home and work email through other accounts. Both the home wireless network and google account were things I knew I should set up, if only to "keep up" with current technology, so I found those requirements only slightly stressful. Now that I can get to the internet, I find that the Toshiba is even sometimes faster than my home PC (to be fair, not a new system) for video, news, and the online applications I use (craft related and online classes). The sound is surprisingly good (in my opinion).Read more ›
