One Gigabyte (1 GB) means 109 =1,000,000,000 bytes using powers of 10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1 GB = 230= 1,073,741,824 bytes, and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system. Examples of the number of photos, songs, movies, and any other files that can be stored on a hard drive are provided for illustrative purposes only. Your results will vary based on file size and format, settings, features, operating system, software and other factors.

Overall, recommended drive with great capacity.

I really want to see manufacturers pushing toward hybrid drives or - preferably - full SSDs at reduced pricing.

The drive also runs cooler than the original, which was making the laptop very warm.

This drive is being used to replace one that was failing in my laptop. So, before proceeding with the replacement, I secured a good backup of the failing drive before it became unreadable. As expected, the new drive fit perfectly where the old one had been.

Installation was easy. The old drive was mounted in a bracket with four screws, and the bracket was attached to the laptop chassis with another four screws. After removing the bracket and the old drive, I then attached the bracket to the new drive, replaced it in the laptop and put the cover back on. After installing the hard drive I booted my laptop from an emergency CD and then restored the backup I created previously. This particular product does not include hardware, software or instructions to transfer the contents of your existing drive to the new one.

The new drive is slightly faster than the old one, probably because it has more cache memory (8 MB) than the stock drive (4 MB.) My PC boots 10-20 seconds faster than before and file copies are slightly faster as well. The drive also runs cooler than the original, which was making the laptop very warm. The new device is not generating any noticeable heat. It uses standard SATA data and power connections, so it can also be used in desktop computers as well as laptops. The new drive has been running for a couple of weeks and is performing flawlessly.

The Toshiba PH2100U-1I54 fits my definition of a "workhorse": other drives are bigger, others are faster, others are cheaper, but this drive mostly finds a happy medium and will get most any job done.

It has decent specs all around, and if you're using this to replace a budget OEM hard drive (for the not-technically-inclined, the one your computer came with) they are probably a bit better, in which case you might notice a slight improvement in performance. It also runs pretty cool and quiet.

One thing I really liked about this drive is that there are no exposed circuits. I build and rebuild my PC every few months, and that extra little cover on the bottom means it's much less likely I'm accidentally going to scratch something. Thanks, Toshiba! (Seriously.)

The drive has the standard screw holes (four on the sides and four on the bottom), meaning that it's also a good choice to replace a PS3 hard drive (since it's compatible with all the consoles - original, slim, and super slim - both format-wise and in screw locations). Note that this drive will NOT fit in the newer "slim" form factor some laptops use.

All in all, this is a good drive. I think it might be a tad too expensive (if you asked me what was a good price I'd say $65-$70), but for all its redeeming qualities I can't fault it too much.

I got this drive as storage and put it in an USB external case so it basically became an external drive for us. However, just by looking at this, it's just a standard drive so it is easy to install into a laptop. If you are looking to upgrade a laptop, I would suggest you use a Solid State Drive instead so it will give you a faster boot up time and use this as the storage drive.

The drive itself is quiet and doesn't seem to generate too much heat from my tests. It also has decent speed. It is only a 5400 RPM drive but seems to copy over files just as fast as a 7200 RPM drive. It does its job and we have not had any issues with it. The 3 year warranty was what really caught my eye though. It is quite impressive and hopefully we won't need to use the warranty at all. So if you're looking for a cheap drive, whether it be backup or not, this is a great drive.

Given the giant installs that console games are requiring these days, we're finally going to NEED terabyte harddrives in them to keep more than a few games ready to play at any given time. After seeing some of the tests online which reported a pretty minimal benefit to using a HDD in a console versus an SSD, I decided to save myself some money and gain some capacity with this unit. Following some instructions online, I had zero issues getting the PS4 to recognize the drive and haven't hit any snags since. Seems to be an ideal unit for that purpose.

If you have a Toshiba notebook, this is the perfect internal hard drive to give you some boost and space needed to upgrade your investment. Assuming your notebook is not too old and your processor is advanced this is a very nice complementary product. In addition to RAM or memory, which is relatively inexpensive, a hard drive upgrade is a solid upgrade.

However, unlike RAM which is easily to install, you should pay attention to installing the hard drive. While it is easy to install (a couple of screws and you simply replace your current drive), it does need to be configured. So, you will need your original operating disk to insure it is set up properly. On the other hand, if you don't have the original disk or you simply don't want to jeopardize your investment by not correctly installing, your local computer tech should be able to complete the install for approximately $100 - $125. Believe me, if you invest into an upgraded internal hard drive, the fee you pay to have professional installation is your insurance to truly utilize the product. The only other option is to purchase an external hard dirve, but why do that when you can have a internal drive which now provides all the space you could possibly desire? A good investment for those who have a generic computer such as a Toshiba that is easily upgradeable, without having to purchase another unit.
