Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Great for the bedroom, dorm, kitchen, or office, the 24-inch MW24FN1 delivers the quality of DVD and the convenience of a VCR, all in one space-saving unit cased in Toshiba's classy silver exterior. The set's FST PURE flat tube eliminates intrusive reflections from ambient light relative to conventional CRT designs and broadens the angles from which the screen may be viewed. Front-panel audio/video inputs accommodate hookups of a camcorder or gaming console, while a front-panel headphone jack grants listening privacy.

The four-head, hi-fi/stereo VCR offers eight-event, one-month programming and digital auto tracking. The set offers stereo sound through two front-firing speakers, which derive a heightened sense of stereo separation from their double-baffle design. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to an audio/video receiver.

Use the "on" timer as an alarm clock to wake up to a favorite movie, or have the set turn off automatically when viewing in the evening (up to 360 minutes in either case). Violent or sexually explicit programming can be identified and blocked using V-Chip, prohibiting viewing by young children.

From the Manufacturer

Features:

Video

  • FST PURE flat picture tube: Due to its flat design, viewing angle and picture linearity are greatly improved over traditional tube designs, delivering the most accurate, life-like images possible.
  • Full-featured DVD player and 4-head VCR
  • Digital comb filter: Chrominance and luminance signals are converted to a digital medium prior to separation and 2H delay. This process provides enhanced color purity and reduced dot crawl. Vertical and diagonal correction performed in a digital medium provides highly accurate chrominance and luminance signal separation.
  • 4-head/19-micron head system: Offers superior slow motion effects over conventional 2-head VCR designs. Toshiba's 19-Micron Heads match precisely the width of the LP and EP azimuths and read only the signal recorded on each azimuth (not adjoining tracks). The benefit is significantly enhanced SLP and EP performance so good, it rivals the quality of tapes recorded in the SP Mode.
  • Picture zoom: This interactive DVD feature allows you to select an area of the picture you want to zoom in on and magnify it. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces superior color fidelity and resolution, even when you're zoomed in. Also can be used to expand letterbox-only films to increase the viewable area on-screen.
  • Digital auto tracking: constantly adjusts tape alignment for optimum picture quality.

Audio

  • Stereo TV with double-baffle speaker system: Improved stereo sound reproduction without connecting additional speakers.
  • Coaxial digital audio output.
  • VHS HiFi stereo: Delivers the highest quality stereo sound from tapes recorded with a high fidelity soundtrack. Can be used in conjunction with a surround sound receiver to create signature Dolby Surround, Dolby ProLogic, or Dolby ProLogic II Surround sound in the home theater environment.
  • Stable Sound: This feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal and eliminates the annoyance of normal program volume being followed immediately by extremely loud commercial messages or drastic volume fluctuations while changing channels.

Convenience

  • Commercial skip: After a program has been recorded, pressing the "skip" button once during playback will automatically advance the tape 30-seconds forward bypassing recorded commercials. Pressing the skip button on the remote again will advance the recorded tape for another 30-seconds for a total of 60-seconds.
  • Auto clock set: This feature ensures that your VCR never blinks "12:00" again. A special data stream in your local broadcast source (where available) automatically sets the clock display and keeps it accurate--even when time changes to daylight saving and back. Auto clock set also provides on-screen displays of each channel’s call letters and ID.
  • Front panel A/V inputs: Front A/V inputs, found on all TV/ VCRs in Toshiba‘s 2000 lineup, are "camcorder friendly" components designed for transferring and editing film, putting home movies onto VHS tape, and plugging in a satellite receiver or a video game player. This provides maximum versatility and convenience, allowing you to plug in without moving the unit away from the wall.
  • One-touch record: Simplifies timer setup for recording within a 24-hour period. One button starts record and allows setting of record length.
  • Illuminated remote
  • Auto shut off
  • Auto channel memory
  • Auto head cleaning

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Picture and features, January 3, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba MW24FN1 24-Inch Flat Screen TV/DVD/VCR Combo (Electronics)
The picture quality on this Toshiba is excellent. DVD playback is very impressive. The remote is easy to use and all the controls are easy to figure out. With no wires or connections it is very easy to just plug in and start using the many excellent features on this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the lot, February 4, 2004

This review is from: Toshiba MW24FN1 24-Inch Flat Screen TV/DVD/VCR Combo (Electronics)
We have been looking and evaluating TV/DVD/VCR sets for over a year.
I waited until the price went down as when it first came out it was $599.
I am glad we have it. It does have the very best picture and is also the best looking. This is my first Toshiba.
It is so nice to plug it in and go.
Notice: as with most of the combos, you cannot watch another channel when recording another. You have to watch what is recording or turn it off as it will record when the TV is off.
It will also copy DVD's to tape if the DVD is NOT copy protected.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overall unit; lousy remote control, January 14, 2004

This review is from: Toshiba MW24FN1 24-Inch Flat Screen TV/DVD/VCR Combo (Electronics)
I find the 24" size ideal for the bedroom. It does play DVD-R discs as stated in the specifications, but not all media play equally well. Titles burned using the 1x Verbatim media I purchased at Sam's Club play fine so far; however, the HQT 1X-4X DVD-R media I purchased from CDR/DVDR Media(http://store.yahoo.com/cdrdvdrmedia/index.html) hangs and glitches occasionally during playback. I believe the reflectivity of that media is near the lower threshhold of what the unit can read. The Verbatim discs probably have a higher reflectivity index which makes them easier to read. I'll just shop around until I find some 4x media that provides decent reflectivity and isn't too expensive.

Picture quality is quite good; more than adequate for use in my bedroom. My biggest complaint by far is with the remote control. The basic playback controls in the center split all the other buttons into an upper and a lower bank, with row after row of evenly sized and spaced buttons with confusing, unclear labels. The only functions you'll be able to operate by feel are Power, Play, Stop, Rewind and Forward Scan, and Pause. To skip chapters, navigate DVD menus, or even change channels or adjust volume, you'll have to look at the remote. Really one of the worst-designed remotes I've ever used; very frustrating. A couple of other minor complaints include the logic of the unit. For example, you can eject a videotape and the unit remains off, but try to insert a videotape or even eject a DVD and the TV turns itself on. Still, the picture is quite good, the sound is adequate, and even tapes recorded in my S-VHS deck are watchable (if a touch soft and oversaturated). A better remote, smarter logic, and higher quality sound would earn this unit a five-star rating.
