Fantastic TV,
By CaMarriedGuy (Modesto, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toshiba REGZA 52HL167 52-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
I did a lot of research prior to purchasing a flat screen HDTV and found this one to stand alone. Consumer Reports compared this TV to a comparable Sony and Samsung (LCD's) and beat them both. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase.
I would recommend that any LCD or Plasma TV you purchase be professionally tuned for optimal viewing, although out of the box the TV performs exceptionally well. The biggest advantage I found with an LCD compared to a plasma is that there isn't any glare with an LCD. We have 2 skylights and a french door within 5' of our TV. I actually preferred the Pioneer 50" (5080 model) Plasma's color to the Toshiba LCD but the light effects based on our home layout ruled out any Plasma. The Toshiba, of all the LCD's, had the best black and color resolutions of any LCD out there with no glare from natural lighting. The extra $300 you'd spend compared to a Samsung is well worth it. The TV is in line with Sony price wise but this model is a hair better in both my consumer reports opinion. My $.02.

We ordered this TV from an Amazon partner, and it arrived well-packaged and in great condition. We set it up and it's about the best TV picture we've ever seen. Really black blacks, no problems at all with fast action. Sharp, crisp picture with excellent realistic colors. No glare problems from room light, unlike our previous TV. Fits very close to the wall with no issues, opening up a ton of floor space. We're very glad we bought this!

Amazing TV,

I spent a lot of time reviewing different big-screen HDTVs. When it came down to buying one, this is the one I wanted because it had all of the right specs. I liked the full 1080p that most plasmas don't have. I also liked that you could see it from a wide viewing angle, unlike the rear projection sets. I also liked that it had 3 HDMI inputs instead of just 2 so that I could plug my satellite, my PS3, and still have an empty HDMI slot for a computer, or HD-DVD player (as opposed to blu-ray, just in case), or whatever else might come along.
We got the TV, and I knew what to expect with HDTV. But I was still amazed at how extraordinary the picture was. I'm really glad we got the full 1080, because the over-the-air broadcasts were sending 1080, and it was breathtaking. I didn't necessarily want to watch the show that was on, but we sat and just stared at the picture! It was phenomenal. So much detail! The picture is amazing, and with the ColorBurst, and the Dynamic Lighting, this TV does a great job at producing a great picture. My only complaint is that there is only 1 S-Video input. It seemed kind of odd since there are 3 HDMI inputs, and 2 more component HD inputs. I still have a couple of things that produce S-Video, and so I have to route them through my stereo, and use that as the switch. I'm also surprised that the PC-input is a 15-pin Dsub (VGA-type) instead of the newer DVI inputs. But that isn't a show-stopper either, since it's easy enough to get adapters. So make sure you plan out how you want to connect this TV before you get it, especially if you have some older equipment. If everything you have is new, then you'll have absolutely no problems connecting to it. I'm giving this a 5-star rating because I LOVE the picture, and everything works great!

Purchased on Monday, Watching on Saturday,
This review is from: Toshiba REGZA 52HL167 52-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV (Electronics)
First, kudos to Amazon and Eagle for the efficient delivery process. I ordered the TV on a Monday, got a call from Eagle on Thursday and had it out of the box and in my house by noon on Saturday.
Now, for the TV. I have always been a fan of Toshiba products and while everyone else was looking at Samsung, Sharp and Sony LCDs, I was confident that for the money Toshiba would come up wtih a TV I would not be disappointed in. In fact, now that I have it hooked up to Time Warner HD the question is what would the more expensive version of the TV really give me? If you agree Hockey in HD is about as good a test of motion on a LCD, then all I can say is I cannot see the flaws, if any, from twelve feet away. And, the color settings were more than satisfactory out-of-the-box. I enjoy video, and movies in-particular, and am more than happy with this purchase. I would have spent more if necessary for a better picture, but is a more expensive LCD really going to be better?

Just got this TV - picked it because of its top rated reviews on its video processor and also the anti reflection of the screen. If you have some backlight this one is the best. SONY XBR is a little more reflective and Samsung is the most reflective. If you have no side or backlighting go with the Samsung because it will be the clearest and sharpest, however you will have to live with the reflection of the screen. This one does not reflect at all!!
Enjoying!

We ordered this LCD the weekend before Christmas. It shipped Christmas eve and Eagle delivered the TV the following Wednesday. They brought the TV in, unpacked it and allowed my husband to check it over. Because it was only 12 degrees outside, they recommended not plugging it in until it warmed up. We had it up and running that evening with a fabulous picture.
We hooked it up with our Philips home theatre system and it is unbelieveably clear --even on NFL and NHL sports! We have no motion lag. Like several others, we had compared to the samsung 120Hz in stores and couldn't see a difference so we were able to get the 52" Toshiba for the price of the 47" Samsung 120Hz. Wow --Amazon has some great pricing and the delivery service is definitely top notch. You will not be dissatisfied with this purchase! ENJOY

A near perfect television,

Amazon was great. They refunded me almost a hundred dollars because they lowered the price within 30 days of my purchase. The price was great. The free shipping was great. Eagle delivery was great. It took seven days during the pre-Christmas rush. The picture is outstanding. This Toshiba has no pillaring, no banding and no clouding. It can take sunlight right straight on the screen and still look great. If you are watching football or golf it is very difficult to notice the sun at all. You will see it on darker scenes, but the picture is still very viewable. Amazing really. You do lose picture intensity as you move farther to the side but this set is very watchable from any 'normal' viewing location.
The remote control is very good and it is easy to switch from one source to another. One dumb idea that Toshiba came up with was the 1/2 mute. The first time you hit mute it cuts the sound 1/2 so you have to hit the mute twice to fully mute and once to get the sound back on. Really dumb. The sound is less than stellar which I believe is just the nature of these flat screen televisions. I have an auxiliary sound system so this is not a problem. All in all this Toshiba has to be among the best, if not the best, for anything under three grand. A great set. An aside note, I am sixty mile or so by air from our area television stations and I have a pretty fair regular antenna in my attic. I have used it for back up when my satellite service goes out in stormy weather. The picture on standard reception was just so so. I connected this set to the antenna, searched channels, and came up with something like 16 hd stations that are all perfect. Go figure. *** UPDATE *** It is now November, 2008, and this tv is just as good as I thought it was when I made this review almost a year ago. If you have a sunlit room you will love it. And, if you don't, you will still love it.

Fast delivery, one week from order to delivery. Arrived in excellent condition.
This is a great tv at an excellent price. The picture is fantastic on all channels I pick up with my Cox cable subscription. It's difficult to tell the HD channels from the regular channels, they all look super. There is a 120hz model out now but I can't imagine it has any better picture unless you've really got the vision of a hawk. Buy this one and enjoy it, the price can't drop too much at least for the next year from where it is now.

We have had the 52HL167 for about a week now and it is fantastic. Last sunday, took it out of the box at half time of the morning NFL games, and the HD picture was awesome. We have it hooked up with a HDMI cable.
We have seen no motion blur at all and no green push what so ever. From reading the AVS forums, I think sept 07 builds and on are okay with green push. Of coarse SD isn't the greatest. It depends on the channel. But everything is watchable.

After doing research on similar lcds I decided to go with the Toshiba. The main factor for me was the matte finished screen. My room is very bright during the day and this tv is terrific. I can't believe how great it looks during the day. My old 51 inch Hitachi was horrible. Picture is outstanding when watching a HD feed. I can't imagine how the picture could be further improved. SD tv varies from very good to bad depending on feed. Overall I have no complaints and amazon's delivery was great.
