Toshiba is back in the LCD HDTV race,
By
This review is from: Toshiba REGZA 52XV645U 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
After reading, exploring, researching and hands on comparison I do not regret the purchase of this Toshiba LCD TV. I feel it is an outstanding value for a 52 inch lcd class tv. Toshiba's new 5 gig processor combined with the 120Hz smooth's action transitions as well as delivering outstanding darks and vibrant colors. My family room is well lit with sunlight during the day and there is no screen glare. The picture is very clear and sharp as well. The set is extremely impressive with an HD signal. It does almost as well with just a regular digital signal from cable/antena. I also hooked up a older JVC DVD player using just the old RCA cables and was extremely surprised at how good the picture looked. very close to looking as good as HD. I am getting Toshiba's upscaling DVD player, its on order, and will be using it soon. The remote is a breeze to use. Its simple to find which format to use for displaying the signal. Toshiba has done their homework. They should get back some of their market share that they lost to Samsung. I would stack this LCD against any other 50+ inch LCD HDTV out there. I also am using a Philips home theater sound system and the audio is outstanding. The onboard speaker does an good job for every day viewing but won't compair to a home theater system. I would buy this product again, hands down. Look closely at this TV if you are looking at 120Hz LCD HDTV's. I also consitered the 55 inch 670U with the simulated 240Hz. Even if it was a true 240Hz I would have still opted for the 645U 120hz. I believe the 240hz to be over kill combined with the cost difference between the two. Over all I am extremely happy and well satisfied with this product.Toshiba REGZA 52XV645U 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, BlackJuly 4th, 2009 I have used Toshiba's XD-E500 Upconverting 1080p Extended Detail DVD that I ordered from Amazon several times now. I am very pleased with this Toshiba product as well. The picture looks outstanding. HD quality. i am so pleased that I didn't get a Blue Ray player but opted for an upconverting unit instead. At $64.00 the Toshiba is at the top of its game. I did purchsase the 2 year replacement policy as some of the reviewers stated that they have had failures with theirs. All in all I am enjoying watching tv and movies at home like I have never before. The Ragza link also enables the use of one remote use for both the LCD tv and the DVD player. Nice. Look at these products if you are researching before buying. Just an awesome home entertainment center paired together. I never thought I would enjoy staying home to watch movies more than going to a theater. My family loves movie night with us or their friends. Again, very pleased with both of these purchases and they both perform beyond my expectations.

An excellent TV, but . . . .,

I agree with all the positive reviews here, but if you need to use closed captioning, you might want to read Freiwil's review of the 46-inch Regza at Toshiba REGZA 46XV645U 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Black He is correct in saying that you have to use the cable box's closed captioning option because CC is not transmitted through the HDMI cable. I called Toshiba to confirm this, and the rep said this is true. I really hate that because the TV has many CC options for font, size, and so on that are not available via cable TV. Also, others have mentioned a set-up issue (the set-up screen occurring every time you turn on the TV) on sets built before a certain date. The Toshiba rep admitted this is a problem, but she mailed a card to insert in one of the slots on the side to update the firmware and avoid this problem in the future. For the price, this is an excellent buy. The technician who set up our TV said that he thought the Sanyo top-of-the-line had gotten around the problem with CC. I hope Toshiba can do that! However, the higher end Sanyo we priced was $1000 more than the Toshiba.

Just got the TV yesterday and think it's great overall. The picture is terrific. Tested it out with the Dark Knight blu ray and it was phenomenal. I know there's a lot of hype about moving to 240hz, but I think 120hz is just fine for my viewing needs. A lot of the negative feedback on the durability and problems of Samsung and Sony LCDs in other reviews led me to Toshiba. The sound is the weak spot, but I had heard that criticism going into this. It's weak, so to really enjoy blu rays, you'll need to spend some money on audio equipment. Probably the best value for the price at the 52 inch size category. Fortunate that I was able to get this as a replacement to a 4 year old TV under extended warranty that crapped out.

Toshiba - 52RV535U LCD TV - FAILURE,
This review is from: Toshiba REGZA 52XV645U 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Black (Electronics)
I purchased my LCD TV in August 2009. Recently, February 19 40% of the front panel of the TV just stopped working. Since I bought the TV, it was place in one spot and had not been moved and has also been in a temp controlled environment with and average daily use of about 1 hour. After going through Toshiba and getting referred to their local electronics vendor to look at the TV, it was reported that the total LCD Panel is bad and not fixable and the cost of replacing it would be over $2,700. I paid about $1,800 for the TV. I notified Toshiba and since it is 6-months our of manufacturers warranty, they will not help with any cost of replacement. This is obviously a major manufacturer's defect. Toshiba will not stand by a product that is very costly and is basically needing to find it's way to a big dumpster to put it in. I could not be more disappointed with the lack of support from Toshiba. My expectations as a consumer is that the TV should last at least 4 to 5 years. Instead, they expect you to spend more money to buy an extended warranty that they should offer for free, or at least prorate some type of support toward a replacement. My recommendation for purchasing Toshiba products is DON'T!

First of all, and this has nothing to do with the TV's performance, I placed the order on February 8th, the estimated delivery was for the 15th and finally I got the TV the 12th with free standard delivery, the guys placed the TV in my entertainment center and I couldn't be happier. Lest begin with the antiglare. I placed the 52" Toshiba Regza in our living room, next to a 8 feet sliding door and same length semicircular window 2 feet above the door, the most illuminated room in our house during the day, specially the morning when the sun light comes to through the window. I previously had a 42" LG which did a better job with the glare, the Toshiba isn't terrible but is not as good as the LG. Colors are very accurate to real life and the TV comes decently calibrated from factory, but I adjusted it to my personal taste. Sound for me hasn't been an issue, we sit 12 feet from the TV and it sounds fine, though to watch movies or play games I use my Yamaha 6.1 surround sound system to get the best out of them. The remote is in the ugly side but is very user friendly (I don't use it anyways, I use my Harmony Universal remote ). I find black levels good, black to my eyes looks black and still can see the details like lets say the wrinkles in black shirt can be noticed, and the shirt still looks black. While playing with the colors' settings the difference betewn maximum color and minimum is not that much as in my LG which can go from very pale to over-saturated. One thing that scared me was when I connected my Satellite Box, Blu-Ray player and X-Box all via HDMI cables the TV was not recognizing any input signal, I turned it off checked all wires everything was fine turned on it again and it only recognized HDMI 1 did the same thing and recognized HDMI 2 and 3, I searched for that problem online and red that if that happens it might be that the TV needs to be reseted by turning it off. After that it worked flawlessly. Picture quality is excellent even in 720p. When the TV is turned on ( which takes longer than others TVs) and detects a HDMI signal, in the left corner of the screen says what HDMI input is (1, 2 or 3) and the resolution it's getting from that signal in the top middle of the screen, and here comes my question to anyone who has this TV. Are you getting full 1080p out of your blu-ray player? I only get 1080i, the picture looks great don't get me wrong but it says 1080i, it get full 1080p from the X-Box though, so I guess it has to do with the HDMI cable I'm using (got it for $3.00) I just ordered a 1.3b category 2 HDMI cable to see if that;s the problem, I already tried with the one that came with the X-Box and picture is much better with DVD's and with BD disks but still says 1080i. About the 120 refresh rate, I believe it does a decent job, experts say it could do better... I don't see any motion lag whatsoever but I'm not a TV specialist. Another thing I've noticed is it runs very cool even after long periods of time on I get close to it and I don't feel any heat, I was expecting a heater since my LG gets quite hot and it's 10 inches smaller. So far the only negative thing is I'd like it to have more HDMI inputs and I don't really care for the REGZA logo on the top left corner or the illuminated TOSHIBA logo which can be turned off. All in all I think is a very nice TV set my wife and I are very happy with it and happier than didn't spent the extra cash on a LED LCD as I initially wanted, I went to a relative's place on the weekend they have a Samsung LED, it looks nicer than my Toshiba cause is a lot thinner but picture quality isn't any better, and since I was gonna put it inside a wall unit I didn't really care much for the thickness. I'll update as soon as I get the new HDMI cable.

We moved into a new house and were on a mission to buy 3 televisions. After looking at all the televisions out there in our price range, and looking at all the displays next to each other, this one instantly popped out at us. I know we aren't supposed to judge a tv when it's next to a bunch of others, but I couldn't help looking at all the other ones and how my eyes just kept coming back to this model. The blacks seemed darker, deeper and the colors were more vivid and crisper. I ended up buying three 52" for the house. I'll start of by saying that the picture is beautiful. It has full side inputs and a lot of rear inputs. One thing to mention is if you are hanging it, the rear inputs are almost impossible to reach and since they point straight back and not downward, there may be a problem with some cabling. Toshiba, like any other manufacturer, put their light up logo right in front and under the screen so it's in the way when you are watching tv, however, they were smart enough to allow you to turn it off. The control on the tv isn't great - it feels cheap and doesn't light up, but does glow in the dark. Changing between channels is pretty quick, not like some tv's where you have to wait a couple seconds. Watching Planet Earth on BluRay is excellent, except when there is quick panning, such as when they pan to follow a hawk, you can notice some jitter because the refresh rate isn't as fast. I haven't seen a football game on it yet so I don't know how that looks. The sound is not very good, but then again I am not sure of many tv's that have great sound. I have to really turn up the volume in order to hear it clear. It does have different picture modes such as sports, theater, store, etc. I find store to be the brightest, most vivid and yet retain some really deep blacks, however, this mode is not energy compliant. The tv itself is very sexy. It features a matte screen and it's anti-glare is very good, expecially in our master bedroom where windows are next to and in front of where the tv hangs. The casing is a glossy black which does tend to gets fingerprints when touching it. Overall, I think this tv is well worth the price and you will be very happy with the picture quality. Take it from someone who owns 3 of them!

DON'T BUY A TOSHIBA T.V. OR BUY AT BEST BUY,
By Miss Madd (Ohio) - See all my reviews

I am having GREAT problems with my Toshiba also! DO NOT BUY A TOSHIBA T.V. EVER FOR YOUR OWN GOOD. Best Buy has a terrible warranty policy also you may also want to reconsider purchasing a t.v. or any other large or big purchases from them with the extended warranty because it takes too many complaints of the same or different problem for them to replace the product, (3-4 times)! It should be a no brainer no nonsense automatic replacement when there are sooooo very many recalls, returns, and complaints about the same product! Best Buy in Canada has stopped selling the DLP models by Toshiba so that should tell EVERBODY something! We all need to stick together as consumers and spread the word about good or bad product experiences. Research all the great complaints about toshiba t.v. when googled. There are also several recall issues. No matter where you buy, purchase an extended warranty and be sure of their replacement policy after soo many repair attempts, it should never be 3-4 x's. Numerous complaints are reported by customer's that had the panel board replaced in their t.v.'s even then only lasted from week's to 18 month's and in some cases 3 yrs. who wants or pays for that kind of investment in a big screen t.v? Toshiba has some of the worst customer service help (no help) filled with lies they are also in denial as you will research and find out about a LOT of the issues going on, they only own up to a few of the problems and it took them approx. 2-3 yrs. to even do that much. I GUARANTEE YOU THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE THAT POSTED GREAT REVIEWS FOR THIS T.V. IN 2009 (TOO EARLY TO KNOW OF AS MANY COMPLAINTS THEN), DID SO WHEN IT WAS TOO EARLY TO KNOW OF THE ISSUES IN 2009 OR EITHER WORK FOR OR HAS STOCK IN TOSHIBA OR WORKED IN SALES OF THEM. JUST DO THE RESEARCH FOR YOURSELF AND PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE YEAR OR THE REVIEWS IN WHICH THEY WERE MADE, BE IT POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE. ***AS YOU CAN NOW SEE IN 2012 THEY NO LONGER HAVE THIS PRODUCT AVAILABLE ON THIS SITE (DID THEY JOIN BEST BUYS IN CANADA'S WISE DISCONTINUATION LIST), NOW IS THAT BECAUSE OF SELLING OUT, OLD AGE, BEING DISCONTINUED AND OR RECALLED***?IN THE GREAT WORDS OF MS. ARETHA FRANKLIN "YOU BETTER THINK" AND RETHINK BEFORE BUYING A TOSHIBA T.V. AND ALSO FROM BEST BUY

I'd had misgivings about purchasing such a product online, but some friends had done so with no problems, so I decided to try it. The TV arrived in great shape! The delivery service unpacked it and put it into the entertainment center. I had to hook the cable box, DVD player, games up, but that was no problem. The picture is fantastic! I sometimes felt like I was standing on the side lines watching the opening weekend of college football.I have to wonder why people let big box stores like Best Buy charge them to deliver and set up their TVs. It really is pretty simple. The Amazon price was $200 to $300 less than any of the local stores that I used to evaluate the various sets and prices, and there were no shipping charges. Overall, I'm very satisfied with both the choice of the Toshiba TV and the decision to purchase it from Amazon.Toshiba REGZA 52XV645U 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Black

I purchased a 32" Toshiba Regza 2 years ago and loved it. We wanted a bigger set for the living room and decided to go with the 52" Regza set again. Someone else has complained about the sound system and so do I. On the 32" set the sound speakers were built in on the front frame of the TV -- the sound pointed out and into the room. On this set the speakers are built under the TV frame -- the sound points down. The sound is also louder behind the TV than in front of the TV. I don't have this hanging on a wall so I don't know if that would make a difference. I have the TV sitting on an entertainment stand and the back is open out to a hallway. When I walk down the hallway the sound is twice as loud as it is in front of the TV set. I'm very, very disappointed that Toshiba set the speakers into the TV in such a way to make the sound quality so bad. I love the 32" and if I had read more I probably would've gone with a Samsung or Sanyo set instead. But, I was happy with the 32" and thought the 52" would be the same.

This is my first LCD tv and hopefully the last one for a while. I still havent hooked it up to my hd dvr yet. It'll happen in a couple of days. I really like all the features and how good the HDTV reception is.My only disappointment is the standard definition channels. Its kind of scary when you buy a new tv and many of the channels look worse than they did in your 15 year old tv. I hope that it gets better when i connect it to a cable box. Plus, I am not sure if all LCD's look this bad with standard channels? Can anyone comment? |
