I did not buy from Amazon since I got it as a Black Friday deal elsewhere but wanted to review it somewhere many people will see.
Pros: this is fast, runs business and school software well (mathematica, matlab, unity, visual studio etc), can also run games such as WoW decently.
Cons: freezes in hibernation and battery is inaccessible.

An important note is that if it freezes for you and you need to disconnect the battery, there is a hard reset switch that is hard to find. If you turn the laptop upside down so that the indicator lights (power LED etc) are facing away from you, on the upper right hand corner you will see a tiny hole. If you stick a paperclip in the hole it will disconnect the battery power. I hope this saves someone from the headache I had!

We used this for 7 weeks, one day we closed it and walked down some stairs, went to open it and it never woke up. Went to remove the battery and found there is no access door. Called Toshiba, must return to them for service.....

Bad deal, you need access to the battery to completely remove the power.

****Update 11-14-13*****Toshiba required that I pay for shipping to return it to their repair shop. Not sure what they did, but they sent it back 5 days later, it was in a restored condition, meaning they erased everything on my harddrive and had to reload all my software.

The same problem occured tonight. The lid was closed with the PC still on, this puts it in hibernation. But then it doesn't wake up. sits there with a fully charged battery and 2 LED lights on in the front of the machine. Called Service, oh gee golly, they are paying for the shipping this time, what a swell company. After I spent hours downloading and reinstalling all my games and other software.

****Update 3-28-14: I did not send computer in a second time. Computer works flawlessly now. My son loves it. Read the comments, appears there is a reset button, if not open the case with the 10 or so screws on the bottom and carefully disconnect the battery. Then reconnect and re-assemble.

Purchased this laptop less than a year ago from an office supply store. Worked great -- at first. Had to learn my way around Windows 8, but 8.1 seemed to have fixed a number of issues. The speakers are fantastic! I watch lectures on my laptop and the screen and speakers work out just fine. I had some mouse issues, but learned to fix that with the press of the F5 key. Stopped calling the free tech help when they could never help.
HOWEVER, now my battery is dying. Doesn't even last 20 minutes away from a cord (and yes, I know about battery memory). I called Toshiba to see if I could purchase a new battery. Nope. They won't even sell me one. I have to pay $30 for them to ship it to some repair depot. Because the wonderful S55-A5295 has an INTERNAL battery that they don't want the average joe to replace. So, the S55 poses as a laptop but really becomes a desktop. If you're not looking for anything remotely portable, this laptop might work for you. But I was looking for something portable -- which means I won't be looking at Toshiba ever again.

UPDATE: [November 16, 2014] I decided that since Toshiba was not going to honor their warranty that all guarantees were null and void. So I opened up the back of my laptop and ordered a new battery from Amazon. The model number for the battery is PA5107U-1BRS. When the new battery arrived, I removed the old one (by gently removing two pieces of tape and one connection)and inserted the new one. Charged it over night and now my laptop is a laptop and not a desktop anymore. I'm not sure why Toshiba is scaring everyone into believing that the battery can't be changed by the average user. Maybe I should nominate Toshiba for a Pants on Fire award?

This was a Christmas gift for my high school age granddaughter and she loves it. She has used it non-stop since the day it arrived. The picture quality is beautiful on this nice large screen.

i have had it a few months.. too late I am sorry to say to return. the touch pad works/then does not work?
after many convos with toshiba... even resetting it to default settings.. the mouse works and then does not worki
I plug up an external mouse it works.. unplug the external mouse and IT works again.. Weird.. and of course it was working when repair got it but i told them i worked and did not work....I finally found out that they said it had a loose wire
now, finally someone at Toshiba tells me to send it in.. They charged me $25 to send it in. I got it back in the same condition i sent it to be repaired.. nothing WAS done. it said No trouble found.. update: 4/1/14
repeated calls to the number at Toshiba Repair depot... recording only.. no human answers.. left my phone number.. several times.. no one returns my calls.
Repeated phone calls to Toshiba repair.. they say they are only repair ... phone call to the service center on bottom or returned repair order.. all they could do was send an e mail to the depot.. they did transferred me to depot but again recording. I called repair dept again. they said return it again.... yet i NEED to talk to a real person to the depot to find out if is computer part or me. also .. they did not set it back to factory settings as i was told but that was ok glad they did not. i now give toshiba a zero.

update 4/3/14 and a few days before.. recently a human answered at the repair depot.. my paperwork said nothing wrong with computer.. I WAS told that my touch pad had loose wire and they reattached it.
I never got the box sent to me for the re return... i called again.. they had given me a number but not a return number to reference to.. and I was told they sent the e mail to the wrong e mail address..
