5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice picture, great player
After two years of using an Apex DVD, watching a movie on this baby is great. The picture is 10 times better, and the audio is sweet.
Another big plus (for me) is that it is very thin and doesn't take up too much space.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waiting to see if my replacement is a lemon as well.
I had this DVD player for 6 months when the DVD playing function crapped out. Even before the DVD player failed completely it never sounded like it was operating quite right...the laser tracker made lots of noise and took more than a few seconds searching for the right spot to read on the disc. Had I known the details of the warranty, I would have tried hard to return...

I had this DVD player for 6 months when the DVD playing function crapped out. Even before the DVD player failed completely it never sounded like it was operating quite right...the laser tracker made lots of noise and took more than a few seconds searching for the right spot to read on the disc. Had I known the details of the warranty, I would have tried hard to return this product within the first three months. I thought I would be totally covered for at least one year and didn't relish the idea of trying to explain over the phone to a customer service rep a problem that doesn't exactly stop the player from working.
Well, it turns out that parts are covered for 1 year, labor is only covered for 3 months. Bottomline is I have to shell out $59 for a Toshiba repair technician's labor plus shipping costs from LA to Massachuesetts.

Apparently, this warranty is the industry standard, so my bad there. I guess the lesson learned is to go with a brand that I trust in terms of reliability...in this case I should have gone with Sony. My Sony TV, camcorder, PSP, digital camera, PS2, and cellphone have never given me problems...that's why I was ignorant of the warranty details, because I've never had to use it before.

3.0 out of 5 stars It Works, But Only A Cryptologist Would Enjoy the Menu, September 14, 2003

I got this DVD player after I tried a Samsung which choked on discs and had other problems. This Toshiba DVD player really works, delivering a crystal-clear picture and audio, is easy to set up, and plays DVDs without fuss or problem, but the interface is unnecessarily difficult to use. Press "MENU" and a bunch of tiny symbols come up which you have to laboriously arrow and toggle through using the tiny buttons on the remote control. I recommend the Toshiba 3900 DVD player instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Choose a company that cares, August 11, 2003

My dvd doesn't work after 2 months, and Toshiba customer service does not exist, so go with a company worth doing business with.

I bought one of these units and it performs pretty well. The TV screens are informative and the whole thing is intuitive to use. However, it will sometimes do a pause, skip and jump as the controller catches up with the picture. Also if the DVD isn't perfect the player won't track and the whole thing will seize up in the middle of a movie. You can fiddle around with it and force it past the part it doesn't like by entering a distance a little greater than the one you're at but why buy a unit that does this? Toshiba service only suggested I bring it into a service center. But without one of these DVD's that stick what could they prove?

3.0 out of 5 stars Audio failed, September 28, 2003
This review is from: Toshiba SD-2900 DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
After 18 months the audio just stopped working due to an internal failure that was not repairable - warranty is only 1 year.

I purchased this DVD player specifically because they claimed that you could copy jpg files to a CD-R and play them on your TV set through the DVD player. So far I haven't had much luck at doing this. It seems to be very finicky about what CDs it will accept or the format of the jpg image. They list only four CDs in the instruction manual that they say will work - the Kodak Picture CD, Canon QuickCD, Fujicolor CD and the Noritsu QSS CD. As a DVD player, it is mediocre, no better or worse than other DVDs in its price range - I have a another brand DVD that cost about the same but is a lot easier to use.

1.0 out of 5 stars How does a unit get to be sold, if it doesn't work?, January 6, 2004

Not knowing anything about DVD, I trusted Toshiba, cause they do have a pretty good reputation on electronic units. If I would have known a little about DVD, I would have ran,not walked, back to Best Buy and returned this. DVD's are not supposed to lose audio after you go out of pause. DVD's are supposed to read all region 1 DVDs. Simple. No ifs or maybes about it. This unit failed to read a brand new DVD. All I get is ?????|?? Write_Run_Start on the screen. and if I remove the Disk, it stays on the screen. This sounds like a bad eprom. But we will never know, cause customer service, except for Best Buy, didn't exist. 90 day warrenty. I think that said it all.
Very, very disapointing. oh, I tried the DVD on my ... computer DVD drive, it works great!
