5.0 out of 5 stars #1 Region Code Free DVD Player Player
This is the best DVD Player with multi region features :
1). It Plays PAL and NTSC on Regular American TV
2). Plays my Region 2 PAL like a charm
3). Built in PAL to NTSC converter
4). Better picture quality than JVC 412 that I had before
5). Plays REC and REA like a charm

what else you can expect.

1.0 out of 5 stars ...and it came so highly recommended
This DVD player started off great -- it played all my Region 1 disks, including my DVDs I brought from Germany and other regions.

About six months into owning this player, however, every disk it tried to play would gradually scratch and skip more and more, until it wouldn't play a single DVD or CD, displaying that all the DVDs were "Bad Disks" as the error...

5.0 out of 5 stars No complaints so far, December 25, 2005
This review is from: Toshiba SD 3980 - Region Free Code Free PAL NTSC DVD player (Electronics)
I was leary of entering the "All-region" player market after reading so many negative reviews. This Toshiba unit has not let me down. I have been able to enjoy my home recorded dvds (converted from 25 years of home video camera recordings) and all dvds purchased in NTSC & PAL formats. I can now buy my favorite movies and series from all over the world !! I owe all the credit to North Star Electronics for being so helpful and courteous in patiently explaining to me all the working details of the ALL-REGION player. Customer service was an important factor in buying my unit and North Star Electronics can't be beat. They are quick to answer your call and very knowledgeable of the product. Great product--great service--not much more you can ask for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Premium product at acceptable price, December 4, 2004
This review is from: Toshiba SD 3980 - Region Free Code Free PAL NTSC DVD player (Electronics)
I'm an international students doing my graduate courseworks in New York. I have a problem about DVD zoning because most of my favorite movies are from Asia with the different zones with US.

I did search many alternatives which are more expensive than this product (i.e Sony with starting price at one hundred something). Buying this product gives me a big surprise! Firstly, the seller is really great. I got the product very fast in all good conditions. The product is easy to set up and keeps what you set up into its memory. So, you don't have to be bothered by the several setup process. Picture and sounds are great for modest users. But for the high-end settings like an expensive home theater or flat screen tv, I have no comments.

Thanks to the reviews posted in this website that helps me make my decision to buy easily.

The SD 3980 Region Free Code Free player not only plays all regions and PAL on my 50 inch Sony Wega plasma TV, it does so with no hassles. Indeed, it does a better job than the far more expensive Toshiba DVD/VHS upscaling combo I had bought earlier (and which I will probably sell now). The SD3980 seems to have a better grasp of formats and aspect ratio. It does not squash 4:3 video. And it does not take a lot of setup. Just slide in the disc and it plays it like it should be played.

What prompted me to buy this model was the Wim Wenders movie "Until the End of the World" which is my wife's favorite but has never been released on NTSC DVD. However, there is an incredible 281 minute director's cut available in PAL with spoken English and sub-titles for some of the other languages. I bought the movie and the SD 3980 as a somewhat extravagant Christmas present and the SD 3980 did a great job. Wife pleased. Me pleased. And this is now THE player of choice in my modest home theatre setup.

This DVD player started off great -- it played all my Region 1 disks, including my DVDs I brought from Germany and other regions.

About six months into owning this player, however, every disk it tried to play would gradually scratch and skip more and more, until it wouldn't play a single DVD or CD, displaying that all the DVDs were "Bad Disks" as the error message put it. Convenient timing, too, since the warrenty had just expired. The only suggestion that Toshiba had to revive my player was to "try unplugging it for a few days to see what happens" -- a solution that worked for about another month until the DVDs started skipping and not reading anymore.

Horrible reliability. Save your money and choose a different model (or even a different brand???), because this DVD player will let you down!

Delivered on time, plays beautifully! Only reason I would not give 5 stars is that the player had a very tiny scratch.

So far so good. Small and very thin unit does the job. I heard complaints about flimsy tray, but I don't see what the issue is. Everything works fine, even with DVD-R discs.
