Toshiba SD-P1900 9 Inch Portable DVD Player,
By
This review is from: Toshiba SD-P1900 9-Inch DivX Certified Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I purchased this unit for my wife to help her uneasiness with flying. She has really enjoyed all of the features on the player, but wished that the volume level were higher. Even using Bose noise canceling over-the-ear headphones, she found it sometimes difficult to hear over airplane engine noise. The image quality is great. Very stylish design conveys its high quality level - definitely not a cheap "disposable" unit. The glossy black case, however, tends to show fingerprints pretty easily.

This was a birthday present for me but really for the whole family. Things I like about it: dual headphone jacks (for those of us with two kids) who want to hear glorious silence from the back seat on long hauls. It comes with the car charger, and RCA/AV output cable. We have a minivan that's a few years old with a built-in VCR and this AV output cable lets us plug into our built-in unit and playback through our existing monitor, meaning we can stash the DVD player anywhere out of the way in the van. When you do want to use the display, it's a nice large 9" display as portables go. So you can easily watch a movie anywhere, including in bed. The battery life is great (rated at 5 hrs.) enough for 2 movies without any external power supply. And it plays a wide variety of formats, including DVD, CD, MP3, and WMA. Based on competing models, with comparable screens, I expected it to be over $200. So I was pleasantly surprised by the $179.99 price tag. Last but not least, it's a Toshiba. I have a standard definition Flat tube Toshiba TV and a Toshiba VCR and they've both performed very well. So I am confident that this DVD player will be with us and performing well for many years to come.

I bought the Toshiba SD-P1900 9" Portable DVD Player for my 3 year old daughter who loves "Dora the Explorer" and it's been a great success on long trips.
On the plus side, it's sleek and black and the 9" display is nice and clear. It's bright enough to be seen in sunlight and comes with a handy remote control. I especially love the fact that it can play MP3 and DivX formats, both of which I use widely. Also, the dual headphone jacks and video outputs were great and allow me to hookup the player to my TV (haven't done it yet). The battery life was sufficient but it didn't matter - thanks to the ready car and AC adapters available with the unit. The only negative things about this player - 1> the outer casing is too polished and highly prone to finger prints (be especially careful when using in the unit in your car as your hands tend to be dirtier) 2> the lack of a built in carry-use-bag - you need to buy that separately (costs about $20 at Walmart) and 3> the remote has too many buttons and is a bit cluttered. You will agree with me that the three cons are just minor annoyances and that is why this player is a great buy for your money.

This is a great product. I use it on long flights, and winter camping trips when I'm stuck in a tent. The player arrived in three business days in perfect condition. The one thing I did notice is that the cover door is on the flimsy side. The picture quality is great. I wish we had these when I was a kid. All we got was tossed in the back of the pick up and given books to hurl at each other:)

Very happy with this DVD player. Only reason I did not give 5 stars, biggest down side: No power button on the remote control. Wouldn't stop me from buying it again though. The screen is very clear. Picture can easily be seen across the room. The 2 headphone jacks are great; the battery play is quite long, in fact I have yet to run out of battery before I was ready to stop using it. Just came back from 30 days of travelling and was pleased to be able to plug this player into AV inputs of various hotel TVs and enjoy my DVDs! MOST IMPORTANT this Toshiba SD P1900 plays every DVD I have given it! -/+ R, -/+ RW, burned on PC, copied from TV whatever. Very pleased to recommend.

If you're looking for a high quality unit, this is NOT it. Here's my reasons:
1) Screen is very low-resolution 480x234. My Windows PDA is 640x480 which displays better. This is my main complaint. There is no detail. You can't read anything on the screen. 2) Don't loose the remote. You'll need it to access 90% of eveything on the dvd player, including menus from the dvd player. 3) Takes forever to start a disk. Like some disks will start playing in 15 seconds. Others can take 30seconds. Weird. What IS good: 1) Long battery life. Anything over 3+ hours is good. This one says 5+ but I didn't test it. 2) Bright screen and nice colors. 3) Perfect for kids to watch on a trip. But not as a replacement to a real tv. 4) Volume with headsets seem fine. Small review. But thats what I came across that bothered me. BUY the LG781 8in portable dvd player. If you want a GREAT screen. 800 x 400 resolution. Looks as good as most laptops. BUT it didn't do Divix and Avi disks. Which is what I wanted. Since my kids will watch this 90% of the time, I didn't NEED the perfect picture, but do want the versitility of file formats. Only other drawback is volume on that unit. Its soft. The loudest on the LG is about 50% on this Toshiba. Not useable on a airplane.

Highly Recommended Portable DVD PLayer,

We bought this Toshiba SD-P1900 9" Portable DVD Player for an extended vacation/car trip. It performed flawlessly with a phenomenal battery life of 5+ hours as well as ease of use plugged into the 12V car power outlet. Sound quality is pretty good and picture quality and brightness is top notch. At hotels it was possible to plug the video cables into the in-room TV and watch a movie.
The only thing you need to be aware of concerning this Portable DVD Player is when purchasing a carrying bag for it you need to make sure the bag is sized to fit 10" players. We had to return one bag that was supposed to fit 9" players and didn't fit this one. I highly recommend this portable DVD Player.

nice little machine,

This is my first portable dvd player, and I must say, it's a better product than I expected. Easy to use controls, nice battery life, good picture. And I have not experienced the issues mentioned in other reviews, such as loud mechanism noise, or of having to "bookmark" where I stop. I watch a little bit of a dvd at a time ( over a period of days) and the machine always takes up right where I stop. My only complaint is somewhat tinny sound quality without the earphones. Other than that, I am most satisfied.

Bad picture quality,
This review is from: Toshiba SD-P1900 9-Inch DivX Certified Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
This DVD Player has bad picture quality. Initially i did not want to spend a lot as i fly only 3-4 times an year. The look and feel of this product is better than lot of others available in the market. 10" players are slightly pricey so i thought i will settle with this one. When i checked it in CircuitCity using a sample DVD they had, the picture looked ok, but after it arrived home i watched a movie that i watch in my TV and was dis-appointed to see how bad the picture resolution was. I immediately decided to return this one and look for better products. Philips PET 1002(10") was best rated in the market. So I went ahead and bought it from Amazon and returned the Toshiba. I recommend buying 10", anything less than that is too small and for a price difference of $55 between this one and Philips, I am happy that I got a better product and bigger size.

It looks really nice, though it builds up fingerprints fast, but who cares. The screen looks pretty good, but could have a bit better resolution, same as almost all other units. The remote is nice but it seems cumbersome to have to hold a shift button and then hit another button just to get a display on screen to check running time etc. And the play button not being in the center of the skip and seek buttons but rather a smaller button above the other navigation buttons seems silly. And the drive itself is noisy when jumping chapters or during initial loading. It's silent during playback, but it sounds like it's breaking when skipping chapters.
Those are all small things that really don't matter after you get used to it though. It is slim and sleek looking. It gets the job done and gives a pretty good picture. Even if something is full frame and you force it to 16x9, it still looks good (actually better) and not all stretched out. Really a solid player through and through. For the price (roughly $160 now), it's a good deal. I suggest it as a buy. |
