5.0 out of 5 stars A great, durable portable
I set out looking for a portable that I could depend on when travelling. I wanted a bigger screen and quality audio visual because I really want to enjoy my movies and other DVD whether they are on the small screen or hooked-up to a bigger screen. I really feel like I found what I was looking for in this model.

In the box: Player, battery pack, remote...

1.0 out of 5 stars Ours did not work well at all
We got this to keep our kid amused on a 4 day drive. It worked, but barely. It stopped regularly and would only restart when "jiggled". It also made terrible sounds that could not have been right. Also, it would not play the "bonus features" on several of the DVD's although it played the basic movie okay. We returned it after the trip due to all the problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, durable portable, April 14, 2008
This review is from: Toshiba SD-P91S 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I set out looking for a portable that I could depend on when travelling. I wanted a bigger screen and quality audio visual because I really want to enjoy my movies and other DVD whether they are on the small screen or hooked-up to a bigger screen. I really feel like I found what I was looking for in this model.

In the box: Player, battery pack, remote control, power cords and adapters for home and car, special AV cables for output to a TV, owner's manual, etc.

Setup: Straightforward. Attach the battery pack, plug it in and power it up. Power is controlled by a hard power switch on the left side of the unit.

Performance: First, let me say that the picture quality is very good. The output is only 480p and its LCD, so the picture can appear lined in bright daylight scenes, but that is as expected I think. The sound quality is excellent through a headset. The volume control is good and can be raised to compensate for car sounds, although I can see how in high noise areas noise-cancelling headphones would be helpful. The built-in speakers are limited and tinny sounding. I had expected the quality issues, but was a bit surprised by the volume.

Connecting to other devices: Because the output is 480p, the resolution of the display may be degraded from what one might expect of an HD display unit, but definitely meets the quality of the player's standard. Sound is quite good as well, coming across as well as through my standard DVD player. Connecting is easy, although the connection to the SDP19S is non-standard, so don't lose the cable!

Notes: The remote control is larger than I expected and very full-featured - very nice! The body of this device is solid and could take a beating. The swivel for the screen is firm and solid as well - you won't accidentally separate screen and body. I haven't tried all the different kinds of media this player accepts, so I can't address them.

All in all, I think this is a very well made, technically sound, and fully featured DVD player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't belive other reviews critizing the sound volume on this player, July 12, 2008
This review is from: Toshiba SD-P91S 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
Although the volume is very low when used without headphones,(and when would you ever use it without headphones anyway?) I almost went deaf when I cranked up the sound when using my crappy Ipod head phones. Great screen size and the swivel screen is an added bonus. You can turn the screen all the way around to block access to removing the disk. My 2 year old daughter loves putting in and taking out disks, so blocking her from doing this while I'm driving saves me from having to re buy the movies she wrecks because of it. You can also watch 3+ movies before the battery dies, and there aren't to many players you can say that about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Design, Solid and Quality DVD Player, June 19, 2008
This review is from: Toshiba SD-P91S 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought a Panasonic DVD-LS80 8.5" Portable DVD Player for my sister and didn't like it as much as this Toshiba SD-P91S 9-Inch Portable DVD Player. The size is bigger most of other portable player but this has a bigger screen, easier to watch from a distance. I liked the design, looked very nice and the quality was good, worth my money! Glad I bought it!

This DVD player is very good but I do have trouble with the control buttons. Black on black lettering is very hard to see if you are watching a movie and want to either pause, fast forward or back up and are also a senior citizen. Other than that it has good resolution and sound and the battery has a nice longer life than other players.

Great price---great sound---connects to your TV, if needed---it is so light compared to older portable DVD players---easy to use and the screen is bigger than the average one. Long lasting battery charge, too! I bought this for a gift, but would like one for myself. Worth buying!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice player, August 14, 2008

This is a nice player. I just got it, so I haven't used all the functions yet, but the picture quality is great, and it has dolby sound. Nice for the price. I do have to say though, this player is heavy , so if you are looking for a lightweight one, this wouldn't be for you. I just ordered a carrying case for it, cause it's heavy and I'm afraid of dropping it, while carrying it. Nice screen size, and the remote is handy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Manual says "DO NOT USE IN A MOVING VEHICLE!!", April 16, 2009
This review is from: Toshiba SD-P91S 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
We ordered this player to use on long car trips, but the manual says you can't. It must remain motionless and flat, so why do they have a flip/fold screen and tablet option?? It seems nice (we returned it before even turning it on), and I suppose as long as you want it to be "portable" from one location to another and not use it in between, it would be ok. We're returning it and getting one with ESP for use while driving.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Toshiba SD-P91S 9-Inch Portable DVD Player (Electronics)
My Toshibia is remarkable, then again I have nothing to compare it with except my full sized Magnavox DVD player (which is a real champ). The first reviewer seems to have a good representation of the technical aspects of connectivity and performance. I find the Toshibia replicates all of the functionality of my full sized unit. You cannot possibly expect a mini device to reproduce sound at the level and quality of larger units with those tiny speakers. Personally, I find them more than adequate. The headphone reproduction makes the sound quality outstanding. I agree with the criticism concerning the display mounted control buttons....black on black makes them hard to discern especially in low lighting conditions. The upside of that is the remote control, which thankfully is black on light gray and works exceptionally well. You will find the instruction manual has apparently been translated into English and requires a little extra intrepretation on the part of the user required. Not a show stopper (especially if you do cross word puzzles :] ) since the controls are reasonably intuitive and resemble those on other DVDs. I found them accurately described in the manual so far as for things like battery charging times etc. I found it somewhat amusing that they caution about using one of these in a vibration filled environment (presumably that includes a car) but judging from the success of other reviewers, I'll bet that's a lawyer-induced disclaimer by Toshibia. I bought mine "refurbished" yet I could hardly tell since there was litte wear evident. I am especially impressed with the price, delivery time, and quality of the product from supplier "Charged Electronics".....so if you're apprehensive about "used", don't be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good so far, November 29, 2008

We are enjoying this DVD player.

Pros:
Easy to work / understand

Has the resume feature - just push stop then turn the player off. When you get back in the car, just turn the player back on and it will automatically resume

Swivel feature is very nice!!

Good brand has a longer warranty than others I looked at

Seems very sturdy - no sorries that the swivel will break (my husband even dropped it out of the truck and it is fine!)

Good screan size

Decent volume - We mounted it between the front seats and with road noise it was hard to hear from the 3rd row of my mother-in-law's suburban. But, we could hear it if noone talked and I think that's good for a portable DVD player.

Cons:
Widescrean - if you have a lot of full screan version DVD's (a lot of our children's movies are.) then you don't get the benefit of the larger screan and I think it may be better to go with the 8in screan.

From day one the noise it makes as it's loading the DVD was loud. It sounded scary like it had to be scratching the DVD. But, it works great and does not scratch.

It's not the most stylish and I think it only comes in this one color. It's not at all ugly, it just has this sturdy look like it's built for quality not style. Probably more appealing to guys than girls.
