While more flexible DVD machines offer features such as analog decoding from Dolby Digital sources, karaoke-microphone inputs, and headphone jacks, the SD-2109 is by no means bereft of features. Besides traditional DVD features such as camera-angle selection, subtitling, and language preference, the Toshiba SD-2109 also offers three levels of zoom and reverse, and forward-play speeds from 1/8x to 30x. The Toshiba SD-2109 also does a great job locating specific sections on a disk through title and chapter skip as well as a convenient "time search" feature.
A nice touch available on this and other Toshiba DVD players is Video Black Level expander circuitry. With this function you can expand the picture's overall contrast range to derive richer, deeper blacks and finer tonal gradation, both of which we found enhanced low-light viewing. As expected, the SD-2109 proved extremely easy to set up and navigate, tiny remote and all. A super entry-level DVD player!

Toshiba DVD beats Sony,
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba SD-2109 DVD Player (Electronics)
When I first started looking at DVD players the first ones I looked at was the Sony players. I read a lot of reviews for different DVD players before I bought mine. Almost every player I read about had some glitch. Either they stoped mid-way through, or the audio sync was bad (sony), or something else was wrong. So I ended up buying a Toshiba SD-2109, because that was the one product I didn't hear a single bad about, and I searched for bad reviews. Also for the price of the Toshiba about $230-$270 (depending on where you go) was great. Everything about this DVD player is great. It has a great picture, the remote is easy to use, has DTS and AC3 outs Svideo, 3 types of zoom (which is really handy) and much much more. I would highly recomend this DVD player. The only thing that I wish it had that did NOT come with it was the SVideo cord. I had to buy that seperate. But unless you have a newer TV that has SVideo inputs you wont need it. BTW I rented the Matrix and had not one problem watching it.

Excellent entry level DVD player,

I haven't had any problems with this player at all. It's performs well at what I bought it to do. Give me high quality audio and video. The only reason I give the review a 4 star rating instead of a 5 is because of the extremely small remote. Not a big deal but it is kinda hard to memorize button positions when your single finger covers 2-3 buttons. If you can stand that, then I suggest you buy. I don't see how you could lose.

decent player,

the image quality is good, as well as the audio, but i would definatly recommend steping up to the sd3109.why? the remote on the 3109 is a million times easier to use , the 3109 has component video out for even better picture quality, and has built in DD decoding.also, for audiophiles, the 3109 is the only DVD player below $2000 that will read the HDCD format (high resolution CD)which are CD's encoded with 20 bit info versus 16 bit on standard CD's.the differance is very noticable. so overall the extra $100 is well spent on the upgrade to a 3109
