1.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba Compatibility Problems, October 31, 2001

This review is from: Toshiba SD2705 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
The Toshiba SD2705 experienced audio delays when sending Dolby Digital code to my JVC 7010VBK receiver. The picture was fine, but every time you paused, skipped a frame or pushed play, the audio would cut out for about 50 seconds. I thought I configured something improperly and spent a great deal of time trying to resolve the problem on my own. I brought both the DVD Player and Receiver to Circuit City (where I bought the receiver)where 5 home theatre sales associates and 2 hours later we still could not resolve the problem. The DVD player worked with other receivers and the receiver worked with other DVD players. So I then went to Best Buy (where I bought the DVD player). They told me that the Toshiba model has a problem with its digital optical and coaxial connections when connecting to certain receivers and I should call Toshiba. Since I purchased the DVD player before the receiver, had it over 30 days and didn't get the extra warranty coverage with Best Buy, they were no longer interested in helping me. I then contacted Toshiba by phone, waited 45 minutes to talk to someone who said they have never heard of the problem the Best Buy rep discussed with me. In addition, the Toshiba representative was rude and somewhat condescending. However, they did set me up for a warranty service call. I still have not resolved the problem but I think others should beware. In my experience, the customer service at Toshiba and Best Buy is disgraceful and ineffective. I will never buy another Toshiba product or shop at Best Buy. Circuit City, however, were very helpful and very responsive and I definitely would recommend them to others.

I bought this one because it seemed like the best value for the money. But in the end I was pretty disappointed with it. I would have thought that Toshiba was a dependable quality product but I was wrong. I ended up returning this player because it kept freezing up. It wouldn't respond to anything, even the off button, and I kept having to unplug the darn thing and plug it in to get it back to normal again. It would do this with both DVD's and CD's. This gets to be a pain in the butt when your entertainment centre weighs a couple hundred pounds and the plug is way back there behind it. I was also disappointed with the random feature. You could play 5 CD's at random but it had to be 2 songs from each CD before it would randomly pick the next. Why 2 songs? I wanted random, not pairs. Otherwise, it seemed to have great picture, but even the cheapest DVD players have great picture. I'm not sure which brand I'll move onto but I think I'll pay a bit more this time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extend the length of you move (and stress), November 25, 2001

I have a daughter (3) whom uses (w/o assistance) the DVD player more than I use the stove. I am very unhappy with the frequent "pausing" and the problems I have ran into with several videos (the Toshiba doesn't recognize it until a power cycle...sometimes not at all). I can honestly recommend that a user looks at a different unit instead of purchasing a Toshiba. A friend has an AIWA and another a JVC, each without problems.

Good overall quality (plenty of capabilities), but the freezing conditions (1 sec to 1 min) cancel every other nice feature out.

This DVD player has changed my complete feelings regarding Toshiba, from DVD players, to laptops, to cameras...now out of the equation (still rank "slightly" above Packard Bell)

I purchased this particular machine, after I had a hellish nightmare with the Hatachi c605u (That's A diffrent story with in itself). Now I have a owned the Toshiba sd1200 dvd player for about a year, and I was very pleased. But I wanted to upgrade my home Theater system to a changer, So I decided on this model, becuase I was so use to the name of Toshiba, (and had major problems with the hatachi c605u) The Quilty of the picture was very good especially with an S-video conection. The Sound was Just amazing, (but you must have a Dolby Digital Connection via Coaxial Or Optical). But If you don't the, simmulated surround works just fine with the 2-2- spactializer (thats simm 3d sound). This Means that it will sound like you have a full surround sound system with just 2 speakers. The Video connections that are; available are S-video and Componet, but even if you have an older tv the video out will work just. fine. The remote is easy to use, a little small, but that's a miner problem for such a major machine. It also plays video cd, cd-r, cd-rw. it does it all. So if you are in the market for a 5 disk changer (Just In time for the Godfather Trilogy). Then the Toshiba sd2705 is the right one for you So sit back and enjoy the show.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this DVD player, March 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba SD2705 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought this DVD player for my husband for Christmas 2001. We used it very little until the last six months. I agree with the other reviewers that the control actions are agonizingly slow, but I could live with that. Then we started to have problems where it skip and freeze up -- periodically at first then frequently. Now it has stopped working entirely. This DVD player was a complete waste of money.

2.0 out of 5 stars 2 problems in 6 months, October 31, 2002
This review is from: Toshiba SD2705 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
Other Toshiba products have performed reasonably well but this one's a dud. It's a good value featurewise but the control actions are agonizingly slow and the panel input went out after 4 months (after the labor warranty ran out). AND there's a strange sound distortion when playing half of the CD-audio discs that I've tried. Avoid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big disapointment, April 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba SD2705 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
This is my first DVD from Toshiba and my last. I had the unit 4 months now the unit does not work properly. The door opens and closes on its own and does not play anything. I did not purchase the extra warranty from best buy figuring the unit was inexpensive for a 5-disk changer and if it broke after a year or two I get a newer model. Although, I am getting it fixed since Toshiba will extend the warranty at no cost it is a hassle to go through the return process. This unit also had a lot of freezing while viewing DVDs when it did work. I still don't believe in extra warranties but I will by a better unit this time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of crap! LESS than 1 star, December 14, 2004
This review is from: Toshiba SD2705 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
I bought this thing approx 1 1/2 years ago for $75 here at this site . . . little did i know what a piece of junk it is.

I buy on average, 1-2 DVDs a week - would bring them home, play them and 1/2 the time they wouldn't play at all (even the menu unaccessible) OR I'd watch 3/4 of the movie just fine & then the whole ending would skip through to the very end. Like an idiot not thinking, I thought I had just hit a bad pile of DVDs - kept bringing them back to the store complaining . . . sometimes even 3-4x for the same exact one - wondering why kind of goods these stores were receiving.

Little did I realize that the whole time, it was THIS player - Toshiba is junk. My realization? The paperwork that I had just received in the mail for the CLASS ACTION SUIT that's being filed against Toshiba for just this reason . . . supposedly Toshiba KNOWINGLY made defective players that were not up to code/ standards and sold them anyhow - all the people in the class action suit have all had the same playback problems, etc.

Thank God I only ate $75 compared to what some of them paid . . .

Be very wary of TOSHIBA products!

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, November 21, 2002
By
This review is from: Toshiba SD2705 5-Disc DVD Player (Electronics)
I genearlly don't like things that are "average."
I bought the unit for its design, and to match the small Toshiba TV/VCR that sits on top of it.
The complaints I have are as follows:
1) It turns itself off unexpectedly, this seems to happen usually when the TV is off. What this means is that if you want to listen to music CDs with this unit, you have to turn on the TV first.
2) It responds slowly to input from the remote and the buttons on the unit.
On the positive side:
1) It has all the buttons you need to play DVDs, and to access special features, menus, etc without using the remote. The is an advantage over many other DVD players which require the use of the remote even for basic DVD operation.
2) The remote is well designed and fairly compact.
Overall: I got what I paid for.

4.0 out of 5 stars great DVD player, September 12, 2001

granted this is my first DVD player, but it performs well after a slow warmup time. No complaints, except occasional freezes, dont know is this a common problem with the digital mode? It also has replaced my 5 CD music player so is very convenient.
