4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I have had this laptop for 3 months and could not be happier. Like the other reviewer, the cursor does bounce when you are typing, that is because it is easy to tap the mouse pad with your Right Thumb. The solution is easy- don't touch the pad. I would also suggest upgrading to XP pro- It's just better.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible tech support
Toshiba may make good products, but their support is the worst i have ever come across. They have lost my laptop for over a month now and do not care a lick about it. 1.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba Satellite Laptops, December 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 1955-S805 Laptop (2.53-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
Keep away from it. I bought my laptop about 18 months ago. First the power adaptor blew up within first 6 months. Then keyboard and on-off switch were gone. Everytime, when I called them Toshiba service was very indifferent to my troubles. It took about a week to fix the problem. Since, they are big on COMPANY POLICIES they can not give a replacement adaptor or a keyboard until they get one in. COMPANY POLICIES are the big words for the representatives.

Recently, the built in mouse was gone and DVD/CD combo drive was broken as well. Could be a motherboard problem. Now, they claim that since warranty is only one year, I have to pay for the repairs. I have already spent £150 to get a spare adaptor, an external keyboard and a mouse.

1.0 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS COMPUTER AND TOSHIBA!!!, April 11, 2004

I bought this computer and within 6 months the motherboard needed replacing - it has now been in the shop for two months waiting on Toshiba to ship the replacement motherboard ($700 for the part and $200 for the service). Each week, the date of arrival of the motherboard changes and I have since bought another computer as I have no idea when (if ever!) Toshiba will supply the part. Considering the cost of the computer, I am irate that the repair is both so costly and so time-consuming. I will never buy a Toshiba product again, and suggest you pass on this problematic machine.

1.0 out of 5 stars dont buy toshiba, June 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 1955-S805 Laptop (2.53-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
This is the second toshiba laptop I've bought, and it sure will be my last.
Toshiba laptops are great - among any laptop owners I've known, I've had very little problems using the product. However, when you do have a problem, the warranty services are horrible.
I've had a few problems with my recent laptop that purchased from the toshiba site online. The DVD CD-RWrom was delivered broken. Also, approximately one year after purchase, my LAN would not work.

I had purchased a 3 year premium warranty when I purchased the laptop. The staff at Toshiba never recorded that information, and it took me weeks tracking myself back to the Toshiba sales representative (the guy that I originally bought the laptop from) in order to get that settled. I was annoyed that Toshiba did not have enough staff base to fix their own problems, but the worse was yet to come.

The 24-hour costumer service staff are extremely polite when they answer your calls. When I called to complain about my broken CD rom, they shipped a box right away via Airborne Express.

It only takes about 5 to 7 business days from the time you make a complain call to receiving the box, sending the box to the Toshiba depot, then getting it sent back to you. However, they NEVER fix your problem. Adding insult to the injury, the feedback form always has some weird comment such as "I ran scandisk on your computer" (did they even read what the problem was??) It took me 12 months, 9 shipping back and forth, and much more calls to the costumer service (which they did always answer politely) until the miserable CD rom finally got replaced.

I refuse to buy another Toshiba product (and I highly recommend others to do so as well) until they improve their warranty services. Warranty servics is not about answering calls politely, shipping things super fast, or providing friendly after-repair comments. It is about getting problems fixed. Toshiba has plenty of service representatives, but severely lacks qualified technicians.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not pleased with Toshiba despite keeping laptop for 3 years, September 21, 2006
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 1955-S805 Laptop (2.53-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
This laptop has many cool aspects to it, the larger screen, the portable desktop feel to it, however not even 1 year after I bought this laptop it started randomly shutting off for no reason. I lost data all the time because it was never known when the laptop would or would not work, so then I started to save everything every 5 minutes or so which became extremely annoying. I had bought a 3 year service plan with Best Buy, so I figured I would try to keep the laptop for 3 years until it was up. During most of the second year that I owned this laptop I barely "had it" due to it constantly being at Best Buy's service center getting fixed. Several times I took it there, and each time they claimed it was something new, and the original problem never got fixed. One time it was the adaptor, another the motherboard, then the battery port, then the adaptor again, then they claimed the bus adaptors were tainted, they claimed I had viruses which I never did, and then finally the motherboard again. I had to get this laptop restored several times and it still never solved the problem either. It would come back and be okay for a few weeks and then would start shutting off again. I would definitely NOT recommend this laptop for these reasons. The benefits of this laptop DO NOT outweigh the bad. Not only was Toshiba service horrible, Best Buy could not do anything right to fix this problem. For almost 2/3 of the second year I owned this and almost 2/3 of the third year this laptop was in and out of service locations. The only reason I kept the laptop for 3 years was because I spent a lot of money on Best Buy's plan. I never had to pay extra fees to get things fixed, however I would have rather had to pay an extra fee to get it fixed the first and last time. I feel like I not only wasted my money on the service plan but on the laptop as well. I will never buy another Toshiba laptop, which is sad because this laptop when it worked was an incredible thing to have. The screen and the wider computer allowed for easy and comfortable typing, but the issues I faced with the shutting off and having to buy new batteries, and the adaptor dying in the end also added to the frustration and aggravation of owning this laptop. Buy at your own risk if you get this model, but if you get a more recent version still beware. This seems to be an overall Toshiba issue, not just this laptop, do not be surprised if their laptops shut off a few weeks after using it!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice Laptop - WORST Customer Service, December 29, 2004
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 1955-S805 Laptop (2.53-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
I had one problem and I shipped this item 3 times (each of which took them 1 month) and they couldn't fix it. They didn't even change one part of the laptop. I am going to agree with others and say DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA laptop just because of their customer service.

I would recommend someone who wants to buy a notebook computer to read a consumer digest or something like that and see the ratings on customer service/satisfaction. These are all electronic devices and all of them at one point will give you a problem. Good customer service becomes the dominant factor to choose where to shop from.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but hot!, May 2, 2004

If you buy this laptop, it would be very wise of you to buy one of those cooling pads with the fans in them. The laptop itself is friggin awesome, wireless everything! Nice size screen, and very clear. I have never had a single problem, other than the heat it generates. I would recommend it only with the cooling pad. Oh and also, I could not find a suitable case either (below) and had to settle with a piece of carry-on luggage myself... Case Logic :)

This laptop generates way too much heat. It has a built in feature to automatically shut down if it gets too hot.

IT SHUTS DOWN ALL THE TIME WITHOUT WARNING!

Toshiba you have a major design flaw here!

BTW - I did install the BIOS patch that was suppossed to correct the problem - ha - whatever, the laptop still heats up and shuts down without warning!
