Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Outwardly, Toshiba's Satellite 5005-S507 notebook bears a striking resemblance to the company's top-of-the-line mobile computer, the 5105-S607. Both units are packaged in a relatively large but extremely attractive metallic blue-gray casing that offers plenty of room for the many high-end perks you'll find inside. Both are designed for the demanding user and ready to record, play, and display virtually any form of multimedia. There are, however, two important distinctions. Whereas the 5105-S607 features a screamingly fast Pentium 4 processor and a price to match, the 5005-S507 sports a proficient but moderately less speedy Pentium III and a far more affordable MSRP. For all but the most power-hungry users, the 5005-S607 should be quite satisfactory.

Considering its above-average, 11.6-by-13-by-1.8-inch dimensions, the 5005-S507 would best fit the description of a desktop replacement, and certainly its rich feature set would seem to bear that out. Heading the list is Intel's 1.1 GHz Pentium III processor, a proven chip that in this case is paired with a massive 512 MB of SDRAM memory. The true star of the show, however, is nVidia's new GeForce4 440 Go video card.

Packed with 32 MB of DDR video RAM, the 440 Go is one of the finest mobile video boards currently on the market and as such will make short work of virtually any multimedia source, including the 3-D games and movies you'll want to load and play through the system's DVD/CD-RW drive. This convenient combination drive also supports audio CD burning and CD data backup. The unit's subwoofer-enhanced Harman Kardon speaker system capably broadcasts music and audio effects, and its jumbo 15-inch Toshiba Personal Theatre UXGA active-matrix display delivers clear 1,600 x 1,200 images.

The 5005-S507 keyboard section is second to none, featuring 85 full-size keys, 12 one-touch Internet and multimedia buttons, and a monochrome LCD cPad touch pad that graphically displays important functions and houses several convenient secondary applications of its own. The roster of ports includes two multipurpose PC card slots, three USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, a FireWire port for high-speed data transfer, infrared and NTSC/PAL ports, and a handy headphone jack. A 10/100 Mbps Ethernet network connection and integrated 56K modem ensure connectivity in any situation.

Toshiba has equipped the 5005-S507 with an accommodating 40 GB hard drive and a bevy of applications, including the Windows XP operating system, Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition, Intuit Quicken Basic 2001, and Norton AntiVirus 2002.

3.0 out of 5 stars OVERHEATING PROBLEM, February 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 5005-S507 Laptop (1.1-GHz Pentium III, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
I don't want to scare anyone out of purchasing this beautiful notebook, but before purchasing you should be aware that there is a problem with the 504 model and the 507 is the exact same model with new HD and GC. The problem is that the 504 randomly shuts down. Believed to be due to overheating of the desktop CPU. If you check the Toshiba user forum you will see that this problem is very wide spread and Toshiba is (believe it or not) not admitting to this problem....

This is a fantastic notebook and the only problem is that they decided to use this old pIII desktop processor that everyone is well aware gets very hot, well, everyone except those at Toshiba support. Now, your only question is: do you want to buy a notebook that has a known issue that is not resolved? I repeat check the forum and do not just take my word for it.

I decided to let you all in on the secret because I know from experience that I do not always purchase at Amazon, but I do always check there reviews 'cause I know Amazon customers care and stick together and Amazon will let you tell the truth.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Battery Life - BAD OVERHEATING PROBLEM, April 5, 2002

This is a great piece of machinery, if you can get it to run for more than 20-20 minutes before it overheats and shuts down. When used on my desk, would last about an hour without overheating, but the battery is almost dead by then anyway. Good idea, not enough research before production. Video and Audio are THE BEST for a laptop though. Even Toshiba admits that there is a problem now (they wouldn't before). Mine was a newer model, purchased about a month ago.... Better Processor, and included an external USB 1.44 floppy too. If you can stand buying a fan to blow on it all the time, good machine, but I give it 1 STAR because a laptop/notebook should be able to be used as one, not have to be on a desk with extra fans. Oh, and Toshiba reps are AWFULL when they're at fault, but great when just need a little help.

3.0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor!, April 1, 2002

This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 5005-S507 Laptop (1.1-GHz Pentium III, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive) (Personal Computers)
I love Toshiba laptops in general, and the features on this model lured me in, especially the huge hard drive, large RAM and great graphics card. However.....this is a *VERY* strange oversight on their part....they have placed in it a chip that requires serious cooling (the kind laptops never offer) after as little as 20 minutes of crunching. Without the cooling, the chip reaches its max temp quickly and then unceremoniously shuts down until it cools sufficiently, resulting in an annoying loss of data. Toshiba is not exactly forthright about the whole matter, but I have a trade in the works with them for a Toshiba that uses the *mobile* (MIII) chip that will solve the problem.
As far as I can see, there is no fix on the horizon, and so this model is soon destined for the dustbin.
