Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Exceptionally roomy and packed with enough muscle to drive applications you might otherwise reserve for your desktop PC, Toshiba's Satellite 5205-S505 Notebook is built for discerning individuals who won't settle for compact performance in their compact computer. Whether used for business, personal, or entertainment purposes, the Satellite 5205-S505 is capably outfitted to meet your requirements.

Toshiba has not skimped where it counts most--at the heart of the unit. The system is powered by a fast 2.2 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor, a whopping 512 MB RAM (expandable to 1024 MB) and an Nvidia GeForce 4 graphics controller with 32 MB of dedicated (not shared) 250 MHz DDR video memory. With this level of power, the Satellite 5205-S505 has no trouble running most common computing tasks, and will also effectively handle all but the most demanding 3-D animation/drawing packages and 3-D games.

Speaking of leisure pursuits, the Satellite 5205-S505 is ready to please. Toshiba has equipped the unit with several top-notch amenities, including a generous 15-inch SXGA+ display (1400 by 1050 resolution), a three-way Harman/Kardon speaker system with miniature subwoofer, and a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can play audio CDs, burn music and data and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the trio of high-speed USB 2.0 ports and the single IEEE 1394 port, and everyone will enjoy the large internal 60 GB hard drive. To help you control your many applications, the system also includes a full-size 85-key keyboard, 12 function keys, and an impressive array of internal and external media buttons and illuminated indicators.

The Satellite 5205-S505 is ready for the future too, sporting a Toshiba Style Bay for supplementary peripherals such as a second optical drive, hard drive, or battery pack. Connectivity comes in the form of an internal 56K modem and a 10/100 Ethernet card. Surprisingly, this full-featured system is not inordinately cumbersome at 13.2 by 11.7 by 1.5 inches and 7.94 pounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Desktop Replacement, June 16, 2003
By

This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 5205-S505 Laptop (2.20-GHz Pentium 4-M, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
I'm certainly not a techie and so don't necessairly expect that I bought the best computer ever made. What I wanted was something that could replace my desktop computer and one that I could still take with me when necessary. The 5205 certainly filled the bill. It's fast enough and has enough functionality to keep me going for some time. There is the good sized hard drive (60GB) and plenty of memory (512MB, standard). There is a combo drive and some nice little things like the USB ports being 2.0. One firewire, but that's enough for me. And I like the sound system, which is wonderful for a laptop. There is a monitor port, TV out, a SD card slot -- absolutely all kinds of little goodies. I suppose if a machine tries to be everything to everybody, it can end up with problems, but so far mine has been absolutely trouble free. Might be a little too big and heavy for a roadwarrior, but if you just need to haul it around now and again it's great. One more neat little feature: it comes with a little remote control unit. Very handy for presentations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great laptop - served me well for several years!, June 1, 2007
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 5205-S505 Laptop (2.20-GHz Pentium 4-M, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
I love my Toshiba. I've used it for everything, and any problems I ever had with it were easily resolvable by googling information or calling Toshiba. I still have it nowadays but it needs repair - the LCD hinges broke because I kept using it on the subway and abused the monitor hinges pretty badly (always bending them back and forth, leaving them vulnerable to bumpy roads, train tracks, etc... when I rode transportation of any kind).

The other issue is that around the same time the LCD issue was arising, my HD burnt out. I finally got all of my data off it, but it was a horrible process. I used and abused the crap out of this thing. Once before, I think the motherboard fried and the local repair shop (under warranty by Toshiba - which is GREAT) took care of it but notified me I needed to spray (air cannister) the vent more often because it was quickly getting dirty (remember? Subway system, outdoors all the time, etc). So I didn't really pick up the habit and eventually the HD died too, supposedly for similar reasons.

I am now going to replace HD and fix hinges (costing me approx. $150-200), but it's worth it for this laptop. I will say the laptop is a bit heavy, but has an amazing design (the reason it's heavy heh).

Also, for the reviewers who complain about this breaking after warranty, I have to say - 1 yr warranty is ridiculous. Anyone who buys a laptop should at least do 2-3 years. I personally going forward will probably buy cheapy laptops, or refurbs more often and just buy extended warranties with them. It's a different philosophy but it works for me! That way every 3 years I've spent $700-800 max on a laptop and I can move on to a new one if mine dies.

Oh also, this laptop doesn't run too hot like many out there - I love that fact and the fact that it has so many useful ports (firewire, multiple usb, s-video, etc).

I should note this was my first ever laptop. Now I'm a bit more careful with trains, etc... Hope this is helpful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Had it for 5 years!, April 29, 2008

This review is from: Toshiba Satellite 5205-S505 Laptop (2.20-GHz Pentium 4-M, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive) (Personal Computers)
This was my very first laptop and my parents spent a lot of money for it. But it was well worth it. It had everything you could need at the time, it was fast enough and had a good amount of memory. My only issue at the time was that the DVD burner did not work I had to take it to fix it about 3 times until they finally replaced it. Another issue was that it got hot fast.
It is a great desk top replacement but it is kind of bulky to take it around.

Now I still use it from time to time. I replaced the HD and got an external cooling unit. It is not as fast as the new notebooks now, but it's still works pretty well. I'm thinking about replacing the fan and heat sink but am afraid it will cost too much. People tell me I might as well buy a new one, but after five years it is so hard to let it go.
