Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Easily mobile at just 6 pounds, the Toshiba Satellite A105-S2201 makes it easy to get your work done with a large, bright 15.4-inch screen (which is also great for watching DVD movies when you need a break). This affordable notebook PC also features a battery-sipping 1.6 GHz Celeron M 420 processor, an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual-layer multiformat DVD drive that also burns CDs, integrated 54g wireless connectivity, ATI Radeon XPress 200M video card with up to 128 MB of shared video RAM, and Windows XP Home edition operating system. This is a Windows Vista capable PC.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) has become the average size for notebook PCs, though it's larger than the size found in comparable ultra-light notebooks. It provides enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
  • Processor: The Intel Celeron M Processor 420 is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. The 1.6 GHz speed resides at the very top of the spectrum for this processor (as of March 2006). It also features a fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and good-sized 1 MB L2 cache. The 420 lies near the top of the spectrum for this processor class (October 2006). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a good start for power users, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add up to 2 GB of RAM for worry-free handling graphics-intensive presentations and multiple open business productivity applications.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 3x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous). With Toshiba's unique Express Media Player, you can won't have to wait for Windows to boot up before you can start a DVD movie or CD. Just a simple press of the button bypasses the system and starts your media playing.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
This notebook has a 15.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3-D graphics. It delivers between 64 MB and 128 MB of video RAM shared with the system RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The A105-S2201 has an integrated 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that enables you to easily connect at wireless hotspots wherever you roam You get a fairly basic offering of connectivity options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. 4.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba satellite laptop purchase, January 9, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite A105-S2201 15.4" Widescreen Notebook PC (Intel Celeron M Processor 420, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD SuperMulti Drive) (Personal Computers)
Purchased this laptop in early Dec. 2006 after a lengthy comparative analysis of existing products. Before buying online, I had a chance to download the users manual from the Toshiba website, and to review set up procedures, functionalities, etc. If you have the time, I strongly recommend this, especially if you are buying any laptop online without seeing it first. After a month of continuous daily use, I do not have much to complain about.

One thing to keep in mind is that all shipped Toshiba laptops have the volume control dial turned off (the dial is located in the front of the machine to the right of center). The reason I note this here is that Toshiba does not mention this in the users manual or in any of the various booklets shipped with the product. I called Toshiba because I thought there was a problem with the sound card that came with the machine (all other volume controls worked well). They told me it was just the dial, so I am telling you so you will be aware as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laptop Review, June 3, 2007

I've had this laptop for about 6 months. I do not do anything out of the ordinary on it. I mostly use it for word processing and Internet surfing. I did crash on my once; I do not know why this happened. I could have picked up a virus that went undetected by my virus protection. I believe it was Windows XP fault; not Toshiba's. I lost everything, but was able to reload with the rescue disk and it is working fine. I would recommend this product. Additionally, I have a [...]who likes to watch videos on the laptop and usually winds up pressing keys (and also plucking all the them off!) and this laptop was able to withstand a toddler.
