Toshiba equals quality, April 8, 2004
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite A45-S151 Laptop (2.8 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, Wi-Fi, DVD/CD-RW Combo) (Personal Computers)
For business I needed a laptop--and fast. I picked this one up due to the rebates offered at my local dealer. I wanted the cheapest laptop that would be decent. This ruled out Compaq, Apple, and HP. I had to choose between Sony and Toshiba, and pound-for-pound the Toshiba A45-S151 looked like the best possible deal. I considered ordering online from IBM, but due to a business requirement I needed to buy the unit and have it running within an hour. This Toshiba has shined from the moment I turned it on.
Long gone are the days where the "biggest" is the most expensive. These days you pay extra for something light and small, while the cheap deals are the larger, heavier, less efficient laptops. Personally I like this unit's 15" screen even though text looks a little fuzzy at its native 1024x768 resolution. The A45-S151 is a beast weighing in at 7.7 pounds. For CPU it has a top of the line Intel P4, and its not a Centrino. Therefore the unit has big fan(s) and vents to keep this baby cool. The unit is big and needs a big laptop carrying bag. Still, it is incredibly functional. DVD playback is very impressive. The wireless "G" works very well. The touchpad is decent, and the keyboard feels very nice. A regular parallel port is a refreshing feature in a world of USB-only. For USB it has four jacks! The thing boots quickly, and the power saving features actually work with Microsoft Windows properly. The included lithium ion battery lasts a long time. Time will tell the battery's true constitution.
As always the first thing to do is format the hard drive and install an operating system. The unit functions with its included OS, but I recommend starting clean. Its too bad they ship these things with Windows XP Home edition--its missing important features that are available in Windows XP Professional. Formatting and starting clean will give you a clean slate--free of spyware, invasive promotional marketing materials, AOL, bogus Norton installations, and other annoying pre-installed garbage. Companies like Toshiba would be wise to ship the unit in a condition that people could use it right out of the box--optimally with pop-ups already blocked, unlimited Anti-Virus protection (like AVG Free Edition), an anti-spyware application, and Windows Messenger services completely disabled.
If you need major portability you may want to avoid this heavy Toshiba model. Otherwise I believe this big old workhorse is the best possible use of a limited laptop budget.

Like it., April 22, 2004

Nice keyboard. The touchpad works well. No glitches so far that couldnt' be fixed. Phone support is a bit sketchy but you shouldn't need it very often.
The programmable touchpad works well. Each of the 4 corners of the pad can be programmed to launch commands or programs when pressed, while the sides of the touchpad can be configured as scroll regions. The keyboard is sized well for big hands and has very good tactile feeback.
Amazon's review has a couple of significant errors. First, this PC uses a Pentium 4M CPU, not a Celeron as Amazon states. Second, the PC comes with 4 USB 2.0 ports - Amazon's review implies the ports are not 2.0.

Great performance, medium transportability, May 9, 2004
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite A45-S151 Laptop (2.8 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, Wi-Fi, DVD/CD-RW Combo) (Personal Computers)
I pretty much agree with the other reviews. The computer is awesome, Toshiba keeps showing it is the leader. Esthetically way superior than Dell, great reliability and with an straighforward installation process. BUT... I would only note that in my opinion the computer is not for everyday trips school-home. It is kind of heavy and actually I found that most backpack-style computer cases do not fit this computer without being really pushed to their capacity limits (or even beyond them). Suggestion: compare carefully the dimensions of this computer and of any backpack or case you may be considering.
It is basically a Great desktop replacement.
