The Phenom P940 quad-core is fast enough for all of my needs, and so is the 5400rpm hard drive. I don't notice much difference between it and the 7200rpm one in my desktop. Games run very well thanks to the Radeon HD 5650. I don't expect to play all games at max settings, but Dead Rising 2 on low settings never dips below 30FPS, and even on high settings (no blur) with 4xAA and 8x anisotropic filtering never drops below mid 20s. In addition, through some google searching I found the 5650 is overclockable. Keeping track of temps, I've been running stable after bumping the core by 100mhz and the memory by 25mhz, with room to spare.
The Harman Kardon speakers sound very clear and have great range for laptop speakers. They are great for movies and games (I don't notice much difference between them and a Rosewill 2.1 external USB speaker set). However, for accurate music listening I recommend external speakers, as the bass these speakers push out doesn't quite cut it.
The display is both a pro and a con in my mind. The colors are vibrant now that I've calibrated them in control panel (cut down blue a lot lowered red a little and lowered gamma), but the contrast changes sharply in the vertical direction. If you are looking at a black screen, you will always either see a lack of contrast at the bottom, slightly inverted blacks at the top, or both. Fortunately, I do not notice this very often during normal use.Read more ›
The Phenom P940 Quad-core, good for multitaskting
1Gb DDr3 Dedicated VGA 5650 (not bad)
cons: touch buttons die in 12 hours (thats why i give it 4 stars although I never use them)
battery life is to short (keep in mind it's a HD 16+ inch screen)
overall it's a good pc, price and specifications ratio are very pretty good
touch buttons could be just bad luck.
My only concern is how the screen sometimes shuts off and won't turn back on...not randomly, seems connected to when the lid closes and when it goes to sleep, but it's only happened a couple times. Also, the touchpad could be pushed a little to the right, my palm sometimes brushes it while typing and the mouse goes jumping around the screen, scrolling or zooming in. Battery life is only about 2 hrs when you have everything running, but it goes up to about 4ish if you set it into eco mode.
Overall a great laptop! I recommend it to mid-level users looking for a solid laptop at a decent price.
For the price I paid, compared to my previous laptop, I spent $200 less and gained a high middle level quad core machine.
Just about every game plays on high with the radeon 5650. The switching graphics is nice, but wasn't a selling point for me.
The hard drive isn't the best, but you have to remember 5400 rpm uses less power to spin. The hard drive was slow at first, but after a day of use it was booting and opening applications(Photoshop, games, etc.) above my expectation. Companies always try to skimp on parts, so if you get this cheap, it can use a better hard drive. But, for out of the box you'd be very happy with your purchase and it's performance.
Amazon doesn't list the ram specs, they're Samsung 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz PC3-10600.
Nice of Toshiba installing 1333's instead of 1066.
Samsung aren't the best, but my last Toshiba had Samsung ram for over two years and never had errors.
I like this machine a lot. I would really rate this at 4 1/2. Just buy it and you'll get a lot of use out of it!
thanks for reading.
