Pros:
Well Built:The New Toshiba C-55 is really much slimmer than the old models. It is extremely well finished and sleek for a sub$500 laptop
Powerful: The i3 processor gives it enough power to run complex excel models as well and entertaining games
Speakers: The speakers are really clear and much better than my previous laptop! I enjoy watching movies on these.
Value for Money: This laptop is amazing value for money. You cannot get something this sleek.
Battery Life: I am very happy with the ~5 hour battery life that I get while using this for movie streaming and browsing.

Cons:
Not available in 17 inch: I would have preferred an extra large 17 inch screen but this is not available in that size
Not Touch Screen: This is not a touch screen laptop. Windows 7 works great in non-touch screens - so it is not a problem. But just make sure that you are not expecting touch-screen when you order this.

Thank goodness Windows 7 was still available! This replaced a Windows 8 Lenovo that I bought and returned. The Toshiba works flawlessly, and Windows 7 has all of the intuitive cues that are completely non-existent in Windows 8. The Toshiba is slim, lightweight, and has good battery life.

I compared several laptops looking for Windows 7. This Toshiba has windows 7. The cursor may have a problem It keeps sticking. When I called Toshiba's customer service they worked with me to fix it. Toshiba says this has been a problem. The laptop itself works well.

This is a great laptop for my Dad. I didn't want to burden him with Windows 8, so I was happy to find this Windows 7 laptop for a great price. Perfect for surfing the web, email, going through photos. The 3rd gen Core i3 isn't the most powerful CPU out there, but for simple home use, it's fine. My Dad plugs it into a 24" monitor, but the 15.6" screen is actually quite nice.

Pros:
Windows 7
HDMI output
More than powerful enough for home use
Lightweight
Nice 15.6" LCD
Has a USB 3.0 port [plus 2 USB 2.0 ports]
Inexpensive

Cons:
Battery has to be unscrewed if you want to remove/replace it

I've only had it a few hours so my opinion may change over time, but so far this is a pretty good computer for the price you pay. The biggest issue I''ve had is the fan noise. The sound is very good. You won't find any computer in this price range with better sound. All in all a good computer.

This Toshiba would have been great had it not been for some internal issues that made it a very frustrating machine to operate. The mouse touchpad would stop responding frequently, apparently a common issue with the model, even after re-installing the driver. The Toshiba website also specifies that this model comes with a built-in microphone and camera and the hardware is there for the camera but there are no drivers installed for either of these devices, leaving you to wonder what the little camera eye is there for. I've had Toshiba products before and liked them but this computer was more than frustrating and steered me away from ordering another Toshiba upon returning it.

Thank you for the review, J-Roc, and sorry to hear that you had trouble with a few features of your Satellite C55. I understand that you have already returned the laptop to Amazon, but would like to address the reported symptoms for the benefit of anyone else reading this review who may need help with a similar problem.

Microphone and camera drivers are not provided by Toshiba since Windows has native support for those devices (built in.) To open the Toshiba Web Camera Application, go to Start > All Programs > Toshiba > Utilities > Web Camera Application.

If you don't see the webcam app listed at the above location, it can be downloaded and installed from support.toshiba.com/support/viewContentDetail?contentId=3399368.

Here is a Knowledge Base article from Toshiba Forums community showing another way to open the Webcam utility: http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/General-Features-Knowledge-Base/TOSHIBA-Web-Camera-Utility/ta-p/346954

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the trouble.

Easy to use, looks nice, good speed. It's still new to me, so I haven't had an opportunity to check out the DVD. One of the reviews I read said there were issues with the touch pad not responding. I am experiencing that as well. I don't like using touch pads anyway, so I purchased a wireless trackball. It's working well. Other than the touch pad, everything else is good. Definitely can't beat the price!!

There is definitely something wrong with the touch-pad. I've optimized the settings, but basically it becomes unresponsive to touch every once in a while and you must wait until the thing wakes up again.

This computer has been nothing but a frustration since shortly after I got it. I would give this review zero stars but that isn't an option. For one, the shift key is extremely touchy and only works occasionally and when you hit it "just so" . The touch pad is constantly freezing , which is extremely annoying... but the biggest problem was, 3 weeks out of the box, the thing decided to just randomly turn itself on . This is kind of a problem. Even manually shutting the whole thing down, 3 seconds later, it would power up. Same with sleep mode. It wouldn't stay off for more than 3 seconds. Even unplugged. So good luck taking it anywhere because it would just burn itself up in your carrying case since it would constantly be cycling between on and off. The off only lasting the 3 seconds. I had a tech savvy friend fix it .... he managed to take out the battery (which has to be unscrewed with a very small screwdriver.... every other laptop I've had it just popped out easily... not so this gem....) . I'm not sure what he did but he was able to to a system overall and it finally shut off. At this point I really wanted to return this but since it wasn't technically "dead on arrival" or damaged in any noticeable way, it didn't fit with Amazon's PC return policies. So I hoped for the best and I'd just live with the stupid shift key and cursor problem...That was two weeks ago. It has decided to do the whole "I will never shut off " thing yet again. And I'm past the return date by a few days. So I'm stuck with this complete piece of junk. Thank you Toshiba. I will never buy another, and I would warn others to skip this brand as well or at the very least , this model. It is horrible.

Thank you for the review, L. Watson, and sorry to hear that you are having trouble shutting down your Satellite C55.

Regarding the spontaneous start up issue you describe, there might be some software changes on the laptop or additional software installed that could have changed the settings or corrupted the operating system that hinders the computer from shutting down completely or establishes a wakeup timer. Considering both this symptom and the touchpad/cursor issue you described, I recommend performing a Windows Recovery to eliminate any software related concerns.

Please make sure that you back-up all of your important data before performing the Windows Recovery since everything added since the unit left the factory will be deleted during the process. detailed instructions are available in the Toshiba Forums Community Knowledge Base article at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Perform-system-recovery-Windows-7/ta-p/279643 .

If problems persist following the recovery process, please contact Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 for further troubleshooting and, if needed, repair options.

Thanks again for the feedback and sorry for the trouble.

Over all, I like the computer. The reason why I gave it a 4 star is because first, the H letter keeps on missing to show, you have to hit the key extra strong if you need to use the letter H. Second, the sound that come out of the built in speakers are like transistor radios. There's no bass at all and sometimes distorted. But when I used my Sony ear buds, it was like listening to a live performance. You're better off using a pair of good portable powered speakers if you want to share your music. Everything else about the laptop is very good. I love Windows 7!!!
